Since Rivals inception in 2002, I would put KSU's 2011 recruiting class in a tie for last all-time with KSU's 2006 recruiting class.

 :ksu:

Gotta hand to Bill, he does have a knack for translating success on the football field to success on the recruiting trail.
For what it's worth, I don't think Ryan Wallace knows wtf he's talking about. So we've got that going for us.

But he is a sports journalist with high integrity who would never stoop to making unsupported and sweeping statements without thoughtful analysis and statistics to back them up.
I see what you did here.

I looked up KSU's 2006 class and that was the one with Freeman, James Johnson, Josh Moore, Rob Jackson etc.  No way in hell that is the worst ever.   I tend to agree he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Wallace becoming a full time staff writer for GPC is one of the low points in the history of that web site.

I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he's really, really, really awful at that job.

He's actually kind of a cocky little prick.

I'm surprised.  Normally, one has to achieve something for that to happen.

All I can say is thank god KU didn't hire Mahlzan :wipessweatoffbrow:

Yeah, KU would be absolutely destroying us every year with Malzahn.

Yeah, one would think.

I think the 2011 class was worse than this 2012 one.

You could very easily argue that the 2006 class was the best KSU class since 2002. Mastrud (NFL), Freeman, Moore, Kendall, James Johnson,  Leon Patton, Justin Roland. I mean seriously.

The 2006 class was the best class since the last good one we landed when Venables, Stoops, etc. were here.

I mean, really, with that class, the bowl season, and landing the 2007 class with Lamark Brown, who didn't think Prince had something good going, at least for a little while?

who is Xavier Gates and what is his story?

I'm glad you asked:

Quote
Shortly after the stunning end to Harrisburg’s football season, there was a good bit Division I recruiting noise surrounding Cougars defensive tackle Xavier Gates.

Then, without any warning, Gates’ recruiting world became silent.

“I was hearing lots of things, then when coach [George] Chaump left it went quiet for me,” said Gates, who has dropped some 20 pounds recently. “Around late December and into January there was nothing. I wasn’t sure what to do.”

Dazed and a little confused, the 6-2, 300-pound pile pusher opted to focus on his academic future first, and applied to several colleges as a regular student.

One of those schools, Kansas State University, was high on his list since Gates wants to be an architect. And eventually he was accepted at KSU.

But Gates didn’t want to let the football portion of his dream die. So he made his own highlight DVD, put together a football resume and shipped it off to roughly 25 schools.

“I figured I needed to do this myself, so I did it,” Gates said. “I sent it to a bunch of schools who had been interested in me at some point, and to schools I was interested in.”

Gates heard back from three schools in fairly rapid fashion — Kansas State, Temple and LSU. This was in April, and since Gates is about to graduate, none of the schools had any scholarships left.

In fact, KSU originally thought Gates was only a junior.

When the Wildcats discovered Gates had already been accepted, they offered him preferred walk-on status into the football program as well.

So in June Gates will head to the midwest and begin pursing his architect career and hopefully play a little defensive line for the Wildcats one day.

“I’ll have the opportunity to earn a scholarship. And after what I’ve been through, I’m grateful for that chance,” Gates said. “I love the school because the architecture program is one of the best.

“This really helped me grow to be more independent and not depend on others. It’s made me a stronger individual.”

Read a few other articles about Xavier, apparently the kid is pretty good.  Weird how his recruitment just dropped off like that.

Question: If Steven West is signing with this class, I'm assuming he grey shirted last year when he committed to us, then how was he in one of my classes this semester? I thought you couldn't start classes until this semester if you grey shirted.

I'm pretty sure you can take classes, but you have to pay for it yourself, and you can't take 12 hours.

If you are like me, you rely on the KC Star for the latest on recruiting scoop.  Who is more ITK than Kellis/Kerkhoff/the new idiot covering MU?

Kellis reporting we lost Reed to KU but Kerkhoff not listing Reed at all in his KU recruiting write up.

The best of the best at the Star.  Worth every penny guys.

You can go to school, you just can't be a full time student, and you can't practice with the team until you go on scholarship, or so was my understanding.  So, this Spring, he'll probably go full time and start practicing with the team.
