Welp, looks like the numbers* show we're currently bringing in the worst P5 recruiting class in the country.

(Next to last if we get to count BYU!)

*Worst average rating. Ranking is higher than a few schools currently, but many of those have close to half the commits/signees to go after more before late signing day*

If you are looking at Rivals it’s worthless.  247 composite is really the only service even trying anymore.  It has us at 56 which is currently better than 12 other P5’s.  We aren’t killing it by any means but we aren’t dead last.

I’m ok with this class right now, not super excited, not super depressed. I feel like we got a lot of players that made big jumps this year. Whether those are just one year wonder types or missed scouting due to COVID remains to be seen. Hopefully we’re hitting the portal hard.

I'll be honest, I'm super relieved we're not the worst in Power 5 football, and just close to it.

How are we on the DITR scale and the heart composite? Are we looking good from a hips standpoint?

Average rating isn't the best metric for that, none the less we aren't even last in the Big 12 in that either, both KU and BYU have lower averages.

The level of caring for high school football recruits will continue to dwindle as long as the portal is around.  Solid portal recruiting is way more valuable than high school recruiting.

People used to say that a class heavy in JUCO was a horrible way to build a program. Isn't the transfer portal the same in that regard? Does this not apply to the transfer portal because they're higher quality players?

People are getting angry about someone saying we’re last and validating it by saying we’re next to last or 2nd to last. My god. (12th out of 14 or 10th out of 12)

This staff can evaluate talent, that’s the only thing holding out hope for me. They can’t seal the deal on anything if another P5 program gets involved, though.

And now we sit around and wait for us to snag a QB that can take us from 3 to 6 wins.

This is the most disturbing part of recruiting.  Cats easily have the worst recruiting staff in P5 and you had better be just an absolute monster at the X's and O's to overcome losing every head to head battle you ever get in.

I don't think anyone is mad, boss. I do think it's fair to point out your error given what you were attempting to convey. Your larger point holds, but it's also worth noting that the head coach has said he's going to emphasize transfers and they aren't rated by rivals.

I don't think anyone, including the coaches disagrees with the notion that we need to recruit better.

Not to correct shooter again, but you highlighted it and then doubled down, but five of the 12 high school players signed today had multiple P5 offers. Klemm and Payne have ridiculous offer sheets. We beat Arkansas among about a dozen other P5 schools for Payne. We beat Nebraska for three recruits, Arizona State for two.

Again, the recruitment needs to be better, but y'all are going to unnecessary extremes to make that point.

This was in The Athletic about Kanak.
Quote
Clemson had 13 commitments heading into Wednesday and signed all but one: four-star athlete Jaren Kanak, who projects as a linebacker. The No. 1 player in Kansas committed to Clemson in July, but whether he’ll end up signing with the Tigers is unknown. Former Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, now the head coach at Oklahoma, took the lead on recruiting Kanak. Venables told reporters in Oklahoma that he would not recruit Clemson pledges out of respect for coach Dabo Swinney.

“My relationship with coach Swinney goes so much further than the football field. He’s family to me,” Venables said. “In this profession, the pressure to win, to get players, I think people lose their way. And for me, that’s always been an easy philosophy and value system to have is just to do what’s right.”

NCAA rules prohibit Swinney from speaking about specific recruits before they sign, but Swinney indicated Kanak would not be signing during the early period when asked whether Clemson would add to the class in the next few days.

“Not necessarily,” Swinney said. “Anything’s possible. I think we got, what, three days? So it could happen, but it’s not something I anticipate right now.”

That's pretty strong from Venables. Normally I would think Kanak landing at OU is fair play, however if you're going to go on record that strongly, it's safe to say that Venables is a piece of crap if Kanak ends up there.

That’s a bit harsh. It seems entirely reasonable and realistic that the kid just wants to play for Venzy. There’s a difference between actively recruiting someone and refusing to give them an offer when they’ve expressed a clear choice.

I don't think it is the same as JUCO.  Portal guys could have multiple years under their belt in G5 or some other P5 conference.  Some of these guys may not like being a backup their entire career at a top 10 program.  Additionally a lot of the best JUCO athletes were forced to go JUCO because of grades.  This is not a thing with portal.

I think the portal will distribute the talent of skill possession players.  If coaches whiff on high school talent they can make up for it with the portal.

I think it also applies to the transfer portal. The biggest difference now is that high school recruits aren't as likely to stick around for 4 years, so they are a lower value proposition than they used to be.

Normally I'd agree with you but he's sorta talked himself in a corner here. When looking at that quote it's worth knowing that there were only 3 recruits he had in this class, one of those three he's listed with another coach who remained at Clemson. That means there are only two Venables recruits in this class. You can't make that quote then end up with one of the two kids you've recruited. When he said that he clearly had to have Kanak in mind, so the conversation needs to be, if you take Brent at his word. "I'd love to have you here but I recruited you to Clemson, it's a great school and all of the other coaches you've been speaking to are still there. Good luck to you and I hope to see you in the national championship game next year."

If it wasn't his intent to say that he shouldn't have made such a big show about not taking one of those two recruits.

I do like their "overall rankings" which calculate transfers as well, which should be more of a thing in the future with the amount of movement (and I believe transfer count towards that class number)

That line of thought was about stigmatizing community college players and nothing to do with actual talent. The word always used was "risk." You know it was this because juco players who transferred in with 3 years to play didn't carry that same stigma. Players who had 3 years of eligibility were players who didn't have issues qualifying academically, it was simply a player who needed to develop his football skills, aka someone who was misevaluated.
