Saw one of our old man coaches recruiting Samuel Barnes, defensive back. Moving away from Evan Fields?

No. Barnes is a CB, Evans is a S. We're also trying to flip Amik Robertson. DB is the biggest need left in this class.

I'm going to guess that we're not going to sign a qb in this class that has another FBS offer, unless they care more about coming to K-State than they do playing quarterback.

Wheeler is probably satisfactory for them this fall for those reasons plus:

1) He came to camp and they loved him
2) He has the size and speed they like in a QB
3) He runs a very similar version of our offense in HS, so a lot of apples to apples comparos can be made
4) They have time to make him what they want him to be
5) He's the kind of kid that will sit the bench for 4 years and probably not complain, or he'll move to another position because he's happy to be at K-State.

You watch his senior video, and you see why they're satisfied.  I'm not saying he's another Jesse, but I can see how this group of coaches can look at him and say, "Yeah, we can work with that."

This staff is weird about QB's.  They like to grow them.  They generally like them from KS/IA/NE/MO.  They don't really get prep QB's from elsewhere, Sams and Cosh being the exceptions.

At the end of the day, there is a template for a QB that Snyder wants in 2.0, very much like he wanted at the end of 1.0.  In 1.0, he wanted a dynamic runner that could chuck the ball and get big YPA with around 50% completion.  In 2.0, he wants a 6'3"-6'5" bruiser that will get about 5 YPR and 60% completion.

Sammy is a kid that they feel has the tools to grow after he spends 3-4 years in the system learing the playbook and taking reps.

I mean, at the end of the day, I'd rather have Sammy as the third string for the next four years than some walk-on from Cheney.

I think I read somewhere that he runs a 4.6 40.  May be hand timed.  But he's got a long, wiry frame that can probably add 15-20 pounds of good muscle.

He's a kid that will probably top out at 6'4" 215-220.  If/when we recruit over him, if he can stay at that height/weight and really run a 4.6 40, he can be a possession receiver.

How do we stand with positions of needs coming up? How are we looking at the LB position for next year?

Well, we bring back basically everyone on offense except Terrelle Johnson and Deante Burton, both of which can be replaced.  I know TJ had a great year, but, eh, you can replace a guard.

On defense, you lose Willis, but the threesome of Walker/Wood/Ball will be alright.  Davis Clark isn't too bad.  Willis is going to be a first round pick, so it's not like you can just replace him, but we'll be okay.  Our best recruits in the class, or at least 2 of 3, were DE in Payne and Hubert, so the line will be good.  Geary and Dishon will be more than adequate inside.

Linebacker loses Moore, and he'll probably be replaced by Trent Tanking.  Tanking isn't horrible.  If not Tanking, it will probably be Sam Sizelove.  Elijah Lee will most likely be a strong candidate for Big 12 DPOY.  No linebackers in this class, but Jimmy McKinny and Mason Barta come off of grayshirts.

We lose Donnie Starks and Dante Barnett in the secondary.  Barnett was kind of disappointing this year, and you'll most likely see him replaced by Sean Newlan or the JUCO guy.  My bet is Newlan.  Starks will probably get replaced by Cre Moore.

All kicking specialists and long snappers come back.

We've got 3 or 4 Lb's that are Freshmen or RS freshmen.  Lee, and Sizelove/Tanking will play next year.  I think Tanking could be pretty solid.

Class Breakdown

QB: 1
RB: 1
FB: 0
WR: 1
OL: 6 (1 Grayshirt = Trace Kochevar)

DL: 2
DE: 3
LB: 2 (2 Grayshirt = Jimmy McKinny, Mason Barta)
S: 2 (1 JUCO)
CB: 0

That's 18.  We have 17 seniors now, and by my count, 82 guys on scholarship.  That means we'd theoretically have 20 spots in this class.  I'm betting we end up with 23-24 signees.

Take away a scholarship because I'm pretty sure they'll give one to Blaise Gammon.  It won't count against signees, but it will count against the overall count.  Assume 2-3 of attrition, so that gets you to around 23(ish).

If you assume we have five remaining, I'm betting we go after:
LB:1
S: 1
CB: 2 (1 JUCO)
DE: 1 JUCO

I think we're done on offense unless something really crazy happens.

If I remember right Elijah Sullivan? Was suppose to be a steal from Auburn at the LB position, I haven't heard much about him

He got garbage time at the beginning of the year.  Maybe during the FAU game?

Once they settled into the rotation, it was Moore/Lee at the top, then Tanking/Sizelove.  Hughes and Sullivan are the C-team.

All kicking specialists and long snappers come back. We lose Ian Patterson but we have a kicker committed for the 2017 class (Jake Roark)

The team isn't going to have any immediate needs this year. This class is all about building depth at some of our position groups that are a little bit thin past the starters, like DL, OL, and DB. So far the staff has done a pretty good job. In the remaining spots we have left, I'd like to see 2 or 3 more DBs, another DE (perhaps JUCO), a LB and maybe another WR.

He redshirted in 2015 and his bio on the KSU site says:

"An athletic and physical player who redshirted the 2015 season... Will be in the mix for playing time immediately at linebacker in 2016."

I am guessing he is still in development and will probably see field time a little next year and a lot his junior year.

He was good on special teams this season for whatever that's worth.

He's also small for a LB. Pretty much the same size as Dakorey Johnson.

Probably not at punter, we have good class balance there and no seniors, but absolutely at the place kicker position.

Another thing to consider is, seems like every year, K-State nabs a player right at the deadline that everyone didn't expect.

I wonder who will it be this time?
