So is Coach retiring or what?

That was probably the extent of his questions.

I think the problem is Walter having any influence whatsoever on a recruits decision. I'm fairly certain he does enough negative work by just talking to them for articles

Exactly.  He probably thinks he's being "real" with recruits by being negative/stupid about how he asks questions and responds.

For example, here is probably what went down with Shackelford.

Shaq: "How do you honestly feel about the staff and what's going to happen?  Snyder is up there in age."

Wally: "I honestly don't know, and I don't think anyone knows.  He could hang it up tomorrow, after the bowl game, or in 3 years."

Shaq: "Thanks for being real with me."

Wally: so happy

And I'm  :bang:

Wally could have said: "I'm not worried.  You know, I know, and everyone knows that Snyder will retire one day.  That's why KSU has been investing in the facility, and recruiting solid young players like you so that when Synder does hang it up, we will have an excellent coach to continue the success that we have all been accustomed to.  We've also been a NFL factory for players who don't even have the natural abilities that you have.  Cody Whitehair may be a 1st round pick.  Last year, BJ Finney, is with the Steelers.  The year before that , Tavon Rooks was drafted, and Cornelius Lucas is the starting Right Tackle with the Lions. We'll be ok and I'm excited for the future."

Shaq: ""

People think what Wally has to say has even a modicum of bearing on a recruits decision to play at Kstate?

Yes.  Seeds of doubt are bad.  These are 16-17 year olds we're talking about.

well, fair enough.  i think Wallace is a dope and a bad reporter and wrong about recruits' decisions remarkably often, but i don't think he purposefully or unwittingly sabotages k-state recruiting.

Being openly proud that a subject you're supposed to be covering is asking you for advice?  Isn't that about as low as a journalist can go just short of making crap up?  I'd think any coach that gives a crap about recruiting would ban that "reporter" from the facility for that.

you don't have to purposefully sabotage to sabotage.  the guy is an idiot and i'm pretty sure that even 16 year old kids can see that.
there isn't a lot of contact between "k-state" and our recruits, basically it's limited to our crack recruiting staff and the assnuts at gpc.  when our recruits think of k-state, this is who they think of.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

I don't think Wally would know all of that off the top of his head.

It could negatively affect a recruit's view of the school if one of the people he talks to during his visit is a total d-bag.

shackelford is apparently coming to wally for advice. jfc.

Quote
Not to stir up any unnecessary chaos over the holidays but based on a conversation I had with Zach Shackelford last night, I think it's safe to say that he's still in limbo on whether to stick with his K-State pledge or stay at home with the Texas Longhorns.

I'd rather not get into the full details of what all was discussed but let's just say that Zach reached out to me seeking some answers about K-State because, according to him, I would shoot him straight (personally, that's a huge compliment in my book but that's neither here nor there). After going back and forth a little on things related to the roster, my suspicions heightened due to the conversation starting out of the blue, I asked about the Longhorns and whether or not new OL coach Mike Mattox has had some sort of an effect on his process.

"Yeah," Shackelford responded. "Just mulling over everything before I make a life long decision."

Clearly the weight of his choice is getting to Zach. Wish I could say more definitively based on our conversation that Zach was going this way or that way but I couldn't tell. In my opinion, his heart seems to be with K-State but the aura of the Longhorns (and likely some pressures to stay home closer to friends, etc.) won't go away. I also wonder a little about what, if anything, Shackelford's head coach Bob Shipley has said (assuming he has helped at all, I honestly don't know). Yes, Shipley as in the father of Jordan and Jaxon as well as being a one-time assistant at Texas under Mack Brown.

Is this real? Reads like an onion article.

I'm shocked that we're having a hard time recruiting with a 77-year-old coach who doesn't have a viable succession plan.

I mean, who wouldn't want to sign up for that?
