he would get hammered at our game and probably never come back.

He gets hammered quite a bit and his attendance is pretty sporadic.  It's a pretty friendly game and he gets real whiney though.  Would be different if these people didn't all know each other.

Quote
Also the guy that always gets fouled but never fouls anyone.  In a real game he would foul out in five minutes.

Offense doesn't call fouls? If he's really making bad calls, he'll get mocked and most likely change.

We call on either, lots of times it is on defense though.  The core group has been playing in this game for 10 years or so.  It's very laid back and friendly.  It's not so much him making horrible calls, just making the "I can't believe you are going to call THAT foul" face a lot.

Mock him relentlessly. We have a guy kind of like that and I probably enjoy everyone giving him crap more than I would if he was more honest and fair with his calls.

This is also great because he's really high up in sf city government and there are several people that work under him that give him as much crap as anyone. One time he told one of his underlings, "you're gonna talk to me like that and you're on contract?!?" Then everyone laughed.

Question for you regular pick up bball players (asking for a friend):

Does it suck when you have to play with guys that aren't good, like with people who didn't play high school basketball, but know how to play, I mean this person isn't a ball hog and pretty much just shoots wide open layups, and tries on defense and sets the occasional screen, but otherwise just passes the rock around and usually guards the other teams tall guy because he's kind of tall. Also this person doesn't have basketball shoes (if that matters). Anyway does it suck to play with that guy?

No, that doesn't suck that much. I'd rather play with guys like your canadian friend than guys who cherry pick and shoot 3s before making a single pass.

Lots of people don't understand that transition is effective even if you don't have the numbers advantage. Take advantage of the entropy on defense, people.

i absolutely never call a foul if someone fouls me. if they dont wanna call it, thats fine, but its gonna get bumpy on defense for them.

Sometimes you have to, or your teammates will get pissed at you.

meh, as long as i get the shot up i dont really care.

but what if you don't? Or it's a really bad shot? Don't be a dick. Just call the foul.

i guess my games are different, mich. i play with friends ive played with for years so we usually call it on the defensive end. if someone doesnt call a blatant foul and your teammates dont bother to ask, its an eye for an eye out there.

i suppose if i played with strangers id call it when it was necessary but no one likes the guy who calls a foul every time down the court.

I really don't like calling fouls on myself because I'll allow my defenders to play me pretty physical and I feel like when I call myself for fouls I am harsher on myself than I should be.

I also hate games that don't allow and 1s. I didn't experience this phenomenon until I played with a good friend of mine from Michigan and he didn't play with And1s. Defenders were taking liberties fouling every time I caught the ball in the post and were calling foul, I'd make shots despite getting fouled and I wouldn't get the points.

Yea, but the guy who shoots it, waits to see if it goes in and then calls a touch foul when he misses is terrible.

I've never played a game that doesn't allow and 1's, sounds rough ridin' stupid.

And no one admires a guy that doesn't call fouls, you aren't some sort of hero by being harder on yourself. Your teammates want you to call fouls on offense and never call fouls on defense. A lot of times when I think I foul a guy on defense that doesn't get called I'll quietly ask them if they "wanted that" or tell them they can call it next time. But I sure as crap ain't calling it for them.

I really hate it when two players from opposite teams are going for a loose ball, and they can't figure out between them who hit it out of bounds.  Obviously one of the idiots touched it last. Whoever it was, say so and we'll start playing again.  Resolving this situation  should be the greatest benefit of 'call your own' vs. having a referee.

I always liked the 'shoot for it' resolution to this pickle

Yeah, shoot for it is a pretty basic principle. It's impossible to know who exactly touched it last. Rasheed agrees w/ KSC:

Had a pretty great game today overall, the jumper want falling, but I still made a few.

But what really made today great was that two different people showed up wearing those sock toe shoe things. One was a regular (a girl who played D1 and can hang). She said she forgot her shoes and got plenty of crap for it. But the other was a newcomer (Who ended up being on her team!)

He seemed nice enough, asking for "the slowest oldest guy" to guard, that ended up being me. i was a little annoyed, but whatever. Since he was new and hadn't showed he could do anything, I played off of him, let him go wherever he wanted in the lane, etc. But then there was a fast break where I trailed and went over his back to get the rebound. I wasn't being malicious of anything, it was a pretty standard YMCA play. I'm not even sure he fell over.

Well, he comes back and kind of calmly says, "um, can I get a foul on that, back when I was concussed on that rebound?" And everyone's like "yeah, if you think you got fouled, he's not gonna call it for you." Everyone's lighthearted about it and agreed to take away the basket and someone says "welcome to the Y!" as they often do when a newcomer gets their first hard foul.

At this point he sees someone waiting and calmly says "You want to play? Go in for me. I'm done with this. I've been getting elbows in the back and you guys take it too serious". Now everyone is grinning ear to ear but kind of tries to get him to stay. He just walked out.

:D

Is  "you guys take it too seriously"-guy worse than takes-it-too-seriously-guy? Maybe. Maybe.
"How will I recruit to Manhattan? Well, distance. And the proud state of basketball. It start there, and then daily flights to Dallas, because I'm really good at going out. Like top five good. Ask my wife. She wants me to be happy."

Maybe! He's definitely less common. It was so weird. I mean everyone was joking, smiling, and having fun when he very calmly told us we take it too seriously and walked off.
