there's a guy at our pickup game that will help when the ball is in the post, and when the ball gets kicked out to his man at the wing, instead of trying to recover to challenge the shot, he will act like he is going to take out your legs. He never actually takes out your legs, but it's not cool, at least the first couple of times.

We also have a guy now that dribbles a lot and points at someone to set screens and yells at people to cut but never uses the screens or passes it to someone cutting. He also blames every shot his man makes on someone not calling out a screen. He also reminds everyone to box out after every offensive rebound. He also does this thing where he will start just throwing elbows if he thinks you're fouling.

today:

Quote from: guy 1
HEY! WATCH THE ELBOWS!
Quote from:  new guy above
well, you were practically hugging me.

a couple weeks ago:

Quote from: me
HEY! easy with the elbows!
Quote from:  new guy above
well, you were setting a moving screen.

I mean good grief.

Also, we occasionally get new folks that take things WAAAAAAAY too serious and don't realize that 90% of people playing are cool and don't give a crap for the most part. One time an old-timer gave an "oh crap!" after a pushoff kind of sent him to the floor (could have been a flop, but irrelevant. Newcomer goes "JESUS rough ridin' CHRIST YOU'RE GOING TO CALL A CHARGE IT'S THE rough ridin' YMCA!!!!" Sheesh, you're the one playing to seriously, mister!

I don't think I'd like to play with those people.
My prescience is fully engorged.  It throbs with righteous accuracy.  I am sated.

most noobs that take themselves too seriously either leave or quit taking themselves too seriously. Looking-for-an-excuse-to-throw-elbows guy is an exception.

League starts tomorrow, I'm going to try the fake-out legs-out move if I'm closing out on a shooter, sounds fun.

Seems like it could be a technical in a real game. Not sure. Definitely worth a shot, though. I say go for it.

Well report back.  Does this guy just pretend to dive at the knees and bail at the last second?

yeah, like lowers his head and kind of stomps his foot to stop himself. It doesn't work as well as it used to since I know it's coming, but it's usually more effective than him trying to actually challenge the shot.

I've done it a few times when guarding mouthy players. It's a bitch move, but it's effective.

Shot blockers don't count and counters don't shot block.

I play on Thursday nights with a bunch of guys who are in their 40's and a few of my buddies from high school.

Last night, I caught a pass coming around a screen around the elbow and took the ball hard to the rim. This older guy steps in to defend for some reason as I'm jumping for a finger roll at the rim. My knees hit his thighs/crotch region and elbow came down on his shoulders. He got all upset and told me to take it easy. By the time I had curled and taken a dribble it was pretty obvious I was going to go at the rim with the ball and he still slid under there. That's his fault, right? I mean, if he's not going to jump for the shot block wtf is he doing there? There are no charges in pick-up ball and even so it wouldn't have been a charge.

...Right?

I've gone pretty much every weekday except for Friday depending on the week. There's always at least 15 people wanting to run.

Send me a pm when you want to go.

We've had two guys drop out because they broke their eye socket bones last month (separate incidents). :sdeek:

Elbows guy I mentioned tried to yell at me because I was too far from my man. My man was setting a screen on the block (you know the old HS motion move) and I was in the paint.
Quote from: guy
YOU'RE LIKE SIX FEET FROM YOUR MAN!!!

Other things this guy does:

1) Points for a pick, then immediately dribbles away from the pick.
2) He ONLY sets screens where he comes to the ball. so he's screening for someone moving away.
3) Like, the second he sets a screen he screams "SOMEONE'S OPEN! LOOK UP!"

His team almost always loses.

yeah. The other thing he does is show up like at 7 when everyone else has played 2 or 3 games starting at 6. One time he implored the team to hustle more and I told him to eff off.

My work complex is about half office space and half warehouse/shop. There is a decent group of lunch time players, but some of them skip the shower, put their work clothes (dickeys type work pants/shirts or full flame resistant coveralls) back on and head back to work still sweaty/stinky.  One guy does the same, but is in an office and wears chinos and a dress shirt, although he does splash water on himself at the sink.
