Also, I often get matched with this guy who is like super strong and plays incredible defense and is really hard to keep off the boards. Like, I consider it a victory just when I keep him from getting a rebound on defense and getting a single shot off on offense. But he plays SO ROUGH. I can sometimes get position in the post, but he just goes through my body to poke it out all the time. If I'm dribbling, he goes through my body to slap at the ball. Well I finally called a foul one time when he poked the ball away and he got SUPER PISSED. Said I was pushing off but I'm like, "I'm just bracing myself for you to slam into me." And today I'm going down the sideline, raise my arm to brace for impact, and he's like, "Nice one rough rider" under his breath. He always does crap like that. If I get a rebound he'll like whisper, "nice pushoff" or foul him he won't call it because he wants the rebound but he won't get it so he'll be like, "nice hack" on the way to the court. HE'S SO STRONG AND FAST. Super nice guy though.

We had a young guy invasion at our pick up game.  One of our regulars invited a friend to come play because our numbers were down and we needed a few new players.  Well, this guy brings like 5 kids 19-25 years old.  Most of us are in our 30's.  One kid sucked but made his 1st couple of shots and thought he was an all star.  If you were on his team and took a wide open shot make of miss he would say "man I was open."  I'm like your 2 for 20 on the day give it a rest.  Most of the kids are cool but they get a little cocky, it's fun to run some "old man" ball on them and have them scratching there heads.

Rusty, did I tell you we organized an embassy game? I can't remember. I meant to. I thought you'd be proud of me.

We had "Mission Day" today, which is basically like field day in grade school. It included an embassy bball tournament that was amazing. The ECON and POL sections formed a team and poached a huge Egyptian from the press office and looked like early favorites, closely matched by an enormous and extremely polite group of Mormons from the IT section.  USAID also put together an undersized but surprisngly scrappy team with two three-point bombing, Denis-heat-checking Koreans.

But the whole thing turned into a route when the Marines formed a team at the last minute and clobbered everbody with scores likes 17-2 (it was a tourney of ten minute games).  Also, the head of the POL section got frustrated when his shot actually got blocked twice by two 6'3" Marines who batted it around like volleyball, prompting him to drop a very loud "[redacted]!" in front of all the families.  All in all, a pretty great time and a great day for stereotypes everywhere.

Plus, when the bball tourney was over, they started the soccer tourney on the same court and crap got real intense real fast, complete with teams in full-matching kit and a gentle reminder from the front office that gambling on embassy grounds was prohibited.

Played against Deandre Roberts earlier tonight at the rec, monster douchebag on the court, hopefully he can put that to good use this fall, if he plays.

I have a game full of regulars and I always hate the new guy. I feel kind of bad about it because I usually end up liking most of them.

Lots of them I don't like, though. How do you guys handle the new guy?

Today I cut to the basket and someone hit me from behind as I was in the motion for a layup. I called the foul right when I got hit and finished it. Some shithead tried to say the basket didn't count because I was going "too slow for an and-1" or some crap. I basically told him to get mumped and didn't let him talk so I'm not real sure what his argument was but no one else argued.

Then there was a pretty great moment where the same shithead was yelling at his teammates to "D up" while he was at the half court line and his guy was getting a layup. He also wore full-leg tights under his shorts.

I'm looking at a regular game with guys from work.  Gameplan: try to work on my Tim Duncan old man game.  No need to be a star, just get your steady buckets.

Rusty, I bought my first pair of actual basketball shoes since high school this month.  Felt great. I'm gonna break 'em in during my upcoming SEK tour next week (no coffeyville dates).

how are your pickup games progressing?

The other day we had a guy play with headphones because he was listening to a conference call.

Also, I made the announcement that I was going to shoot more runners (like from 3) because I think they're totally underused. Well, I finally started pulling it out like at random times and I really like it! You get a much quicker release and no one expects it yet.

And by runners, I man runners from 15+ feet away. I can't quite make them from three consistently, but I'm pretty good up to 17 feet.

Well I kind of made an announcement to everyone that I was going to start shooting them more and it's a mostly lighthearted game, so I think most people enjoy it.
