How many beautiful journalists asking us to the Sadie Hawkins/MORP until we get a bad reputation?  I don't want everyone to look at us as the bad boy, when we are so adorable.

Got a thick leather glove for my bday but don't have the falcon(s) yet.  Who all has done this?  Would love some "get started" tips.

Hoping to get good enough so I can do a halftime show at a Cats non-con game then maybe appear on KSTATEO poster.

Chancellor Gray-Little says pay up...

By MARÁ ROSE WILLIAMS
The Kansas City Star
 TOPEKA | The University of Kansas is revising how sports tickets will be divvied up, bought and sold — and the new system will include more safeguards to prevent the kind of fraud uncovered this spring.

Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little on Thursday promised the Kansas Board of Regents more transparency in KU’s points system that dictates which donors get the best seats at sporting events.

Although some call the system flawed and argue to junk it, she responded: “I think it is responsible, and it is here to stay.”

Gray-Little reviewed a list of reforms in a restructured system — the hiring of a forensic auditor, a fraud hot line and more employees to spread out duties — that should be in place “within the next three months.”

All tickets will be monitored from the point of printing through their sale, she said, and formal requests for complimentary tickets and “who is selling to whom” will be documented.

A large diagram will be displayed publicly, showing what seats have been assigned and which ones are still open. The diagram also will show the minimal level of points needed to get seats in certain areas.

“I think she is making good progress, but obviously this is something that isn’t going to get fixed overnight,” regent Ed McKechnie said Thursday.

Over several years, thousands of basketball and football tickets were sold for personal gain, costing KU nearly $3 million, auditors estimate. Five employees of Kansas Athletics Inc. were involved, according to an internal investigation. None of them still works for Kansas Athletics.

Investigations by the U.S. attorney and other agencies continue.

In addition to taking steps to safeguard the ticketing process against further fraud, Gray-Little said, “we are reviewing other legal options, including filing civil litigation against the perpetrators, and have filed notice of a claim with our insurers to recover as much of the loss as we can.”

In the meantime, a fraud hot line has been set up for KU employees, students and alumni. In addition, a forensic auditor will supplement regular audits done on the athletics department, and ticket-sales duties will be segregated to build in safeguards.

Some donors were outraged when they found that good seats were being occupied by fans who had obtained their tickets through other channels. KU’s points system was established in 2004 by athletic director Lew Perkins. It rewards donors points for their support of KU athletics — more points yield better tickets.

Perkins’ announced resignation for next year did not come up at the regents meeting, other than a question of how the search was going for his replacement.

On Wednesday, Gray-Little underwent her annual evaluation in a closed meeting. What was discussed was not disclosed. But regents Thursday praised Gray-Little’s handling of the ticket scandal inherited when she became KU’s 17th chancellor nearly a year ago.

Said one regent, Jarold Boettchern: “There is a very good level of comfort with her level of awareness about the seriousness of this situation.

“She is committed to do something about it quickly. Sure, there are a lot of regrets. But if you have a problem, you fix it and fast. I really think she is doing just that.”

Post your ideas of how to say goodbye to this conference and make those responsible feel our anger.

My first idea:

Plan on having a walking taco funeral pak before the ISU game at Bram.   :cry:

Schedule to follow, but will go like this:

Walking taco wake
Eating Walking tacos
Burn leftover bag of doritos
Dump delicious taco meat on Schulz/Currie's pets

Glumly attend game and probably get beaten by the Mayor of the walking tacos.

Besides looking a bit like a bald leprechaun, has Kellis been good luck for KSU?

I submit:

Since Kellis was hired in late summer of 2009, and begun his own brand of lazy, horrid writing with backhanded swipes and overall dismissive tone towards KSU sports (read his latest write up on KSU owning ku in baseball that reads like an article LJW here: http://www.kansascity.com/2010/05/16/1950196/k-state-rallies-against-ku-and.html) KSU has left ku in the dust athletically.

In head to head competition, ku has only beaten KSU in 1/2 of a sport.  And ultimately, in that sport KSU had a more successful season.

Football:  As ku's football team was brawling on campus while confessing to assault online,  KSU was playing for the Div title up to the last week.  ku's best team ever collapsed in embarassing fashion as the fans turned on the best QB to ever play there and ultimately the admin ousted the 2008 Coach of the Year following a massive payout to keep his silence.  The offseason brought multiple criminal incidents and the hiring of a .500 MAC coach who quickly banned swearing and instituted strict acronym compliance.

Basketball:  KSU to the Elite 8.  Enough has been written about the off court incidents of ku and their predictable choke job in the tournament.

women's basketball/track/some other stuff like golf probably:  KSU totally owns ku

Baseball:  KSU wins the series with ku for the 4th time in 5 years.  Sits in second and remains nationally ranked.  ku's coach reduced to begging for a NCAA berth in local media.

So, in short, thanks Kellis.   :cheers:

Lawrence police said Friday that Jamal R. Greene, 22, and Vernon D. Brooks, 23, were arrested in connection with an attempted aggravated robbery.

Greene is a member of the University of Kansas Jayhawks football team. Brooks was dismissed from the team before the spring football practices for violating unspecified team rules, university officials said.

According to a news release, Lawrence police were dispatched to an off-campus apartment around 1:30 a.m. Friday in the 2600 block of West Sixth Street. Witnesses told police that two men armed with a handgun had entered the apartment and held several people inside the apartment at gunpoint.

No one was injured, police said. About 2:30 a.m., they said Brooks was taken into custody without incident. Greene, a defensive player for the Jayhawks, was arrested about 9 a.m. in the 2300 block of Murphy Drive, also without incident, police said.

The handgun was recovered, according to the news release.

Greene is a junior defensive tackle for the team. His hometown is Kansas City, Kan.

The investigation continues. The KU Athletic Department said Greene's status with the team would be determined after the facts were gathered.

Setting aside a thread to relay updates from the defending last place team in the North.  Just weigh in on news from ku's spring practice.

Specifically, would love to hear news from ku fans on the board.  Now that the second string that threatened to win the national championship is actually first string, can we expect a domination by Gill's logos?

Read in the KC Star the following, please free to add any other news.

1.  It is true, no last names on jersey, just the upper tramp stamp logo;
2.  It is true, no cussin'
3.  He has required the team to memorize a catchy mantra with each letter in the word "believe" standing for a word which is then chanted in the huddle.  Lame Brady McCollugh could not publish what it was because he is an idiot;
4.  That thug from Blinn was booted.  Gill is cleaning up the rogue outfit Mangino had running;
5.  If you want to watch Gill's practices, head to the parking garage and take a look;
6.  Gill is not looking really for ability at QB as much as body language.  Kale Pick's body language says "I cannt believe I have a division 1 scholarship"; and
7.  No word on whether Chuck Long will be charged over the events at his last stop.

That's it for now.  Beems and others, give us some scoop!

374
Lew = $4million
Seff = $3 million
Mangino = $2 million plus $3 million buyout.

And the best they got was a humiliating loss to UNI in the Sweet 16 to go with a total embarassment for men's FB?

KU athletic director earned $4 million in pay last year, likely tops in nation

But that’s a paltry sum compared with what Perkins received in 2009 — $4.4 million.

Perkins’ pay is the equivalent of $85,000 a week — about 10 KU students’ average yearly tuition payments. What’s more, $4.4 million appears to place Perkins far beyond that of any athletic director in the nation.

“It’s utterly outrageous,” said Andrew Zimbalist, a sports economist at Smith College in Massachusetts. “I can’t believe he’s worth that kind of compensation in the marketplace. It strikes me as a hideous compensation level.”

On Friday, Perkins made no apology for his compensation.

“It is what it is,” he said. “It was all based on when I got hired, negotiated from day one. … It was all part of the deal of me leaving Connecticut to come here.”

Perkins, who has seen the athletic budget double to $55 million since 2003, also pointed to Kansas’ success.

“Hopefully, people will accept that we’re working hard to try to keep Kansas competitive in one of the most, if not the most, competitive conferences in the country,” he said.

A university spokeswoman also defended Perkins’ 2009 compensation, saying it was inflated that year because of a special retention bonus negotiated earlier. This year his pay will revert to about $900,000, said KU spokeswoman Lynn Bretz.

That would still put Perkins near the top pay of other athletic directors.

“During Perkins’ now almost seven years, Kansas Athletics has seen unparalleled fundraising, an unparalleled period of renovation and construction of facilities, a national basketball championship, back-to-back bowl victories, nationally competitive student-athletes both on the field or court and in the classroom, and improved student-athlete graduation rates,” Bretz said.

“All of these are measures of success by any standard.”

The Kansas City Star discovered Perkins’ compensation this week while analyzing salary data for about 150,000 Kansas and Missouri public employees. The Kansas Department of Administration, which handles payroll for state employees, provided the salary information to the newspaper in response to an open-records request.

Just $194,000 of Perkins’ $4,485,274.66 income in 2009 came from “state funds,” paid by taxpayers. Bretz said the bulk of it came from Kansas Athletics Inc., a nonprofit organization that promotes Kansas athletics. Most of its employees are not on university payrolls.

Jim Marchiony, associate athletic director at Kansas Athletics, said the more than $4 million required for Perkins’ compensation package in 2009 came from general Kansas Athletics revenue, including supporters’ donations, conference revenue, student fees and other sources. No specific fundraising effort was used to raise money for Perkins’ bonuses, he said.

When he was KU’s chancellor, Robert Hemenway negotiated Perkins’ contracts, Bretz said. Hemenway wanted to keep the athletic director as a state employee, with his compensation publicly disclosed through the state system, as a way for the university to maintain control over the athletic department. It also was more transparent, Bretz said.

Hemenway could not be reached for comment on Friday.

In an interview last year with Bloomberg News, Hemenway said he conducted salary comparisons and reviewed non-salary arrangements at other schools, spoke with Big 12 commissioners and drew on his own experiences on various college athletics committees. He concluded, he said, that Perkins needed to be paid at or near the top of all athletic directors in the U.S.
