The European Union provided Airbus with significant subsidies, primarily through "launch aid" loans, which were found to be WTO-inconsistent. The World Trade Organization (WTO) estimated these subsidies to be over $18 billion. This "launch aid" allowed Airbus to develop and launch new aircraft models, and was a key point of contention in a long-standing trade dispute with the United States

Viewers will note that the $18 billion was essentially start up money at Airbus' inception, Boeing contends that Airbus has received over $40 billion in subsidies (that was as of 2023)

Airbus claims to have "paid back" about $7 billion in the form of tariffs on its products and Airbus claims that Boeing has received various subsides through tax breaks and no bid contracts from the US government . . . but that really isn't the same as the government pulling out the check book and writing $40 billion dollars worth of checks.
