For the last 5 or so years cas has became increasingly interested in futbol. But doesn't have an EPL team to root for.
Qualities desired:
Exciting brand of futbol. Hard-pressing, active, ect...
Good looking uniforms.
Love some stars.
Don't want to be super bandwagonn'y. So no Man-U. (unless someone can convince me)
mcmwcat?? Mr. KK??
TIA.
-
Tottenham and Fulham

Team nicknames, colors and jerseys are extremely important factors to consider. I've always kind of thought Arsenal is a pretty good team to go with. They're called The Gunners, and here is their logo:
(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fen%2Fthumb%2F5%2F53%2FArsenal_FC.svg%2F180px-Arsenal_FC.svg.png&hash=8c99ae5cdd1f27b779b78319a642b82dd49dc1c4)
Very regal and classic-looking with the red and blue, plus it has a fricking cannon on it.
I do like to watch Man U and Chelsea too, even though it seems kinda cliche to say Man U is your favorite team. I think there is a team whose nickname is the Black Cats, can't think of the city they're from, but their name gets some partial EMAW mojo going for them as well.
-
Everton or Fulham. Yanks are on those teams.
-
Go with Chelsea. Not only do we have some of the most egomaniacal players on the planet, but the players love banging eachother's wives behind their backs.
Oh and they just won the premier league this year, so they're also the champs.
-
goals always guaranteed in Manchester City games. plus they have tons of cash to spend on great players
-
Don't do this cas. Don't.
-
Definitely Fulham!!! They are like the Minnesota Twins, smaller payroll compared to Manu, Chelsea, Liverpool etc...
and yet they frequently overachieve. They are also the oldest Football club in London. They have played in the lowest division of English Football and the highest, were they currently play. Basically this club has experienced it all, except for winning the league. < < <(Hard to do).
here is the official Fulham site: http://www.fulhamfc.com/home.aspx (http://www.fulhamfc.com/home.aspx) - This one also has a messageboard that the Brits post on. They have a very peculiar sense of humor.
and here is the messageboard for American Fulham fans: http://www.fulhamusa.com/ (http://www.fulhamusa.com/)
-
Here are some good Fulham youtubes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shSH66osPIQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shSH66osPIQ)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhuKIywEAl4&playnext_from=TL&videos=eP-nSnRauF8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhuKIywEAl4&playnext_from=TL&videos=eP-nSnRauF8) < < < Love this one. Shows the Fulham fans going nuts and the video is only 7 seconds long.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhVkDTfORQs&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhVkDTfORQs&feature=related) - Fulham tend to struggle on the road. But when they are winning away the Fulham fans in the away section sing to the opposing fans,"We're Winning away, We're Winning Away, We're Winning Awaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. How shat must you be?" They have a very k-state kind of mentality. Always thinking the worst will happen.
Traveling to away games is also very common in English football. They have sections just for away fans.
-
Everton or Fulham. Yanks are on those teams.
if you want yanks to root for how about Aston Villa? they have Friedel and Guzan as keepers. also this:
TSG was championing Lichaj for at least a look-see this year, but only becuase of the Yanks’ options. The reality is with four years of seasoning, the apple of Martin O’Neill’s eye should be at least be ready to compete. Lichaj is expected to crack the 18 at top-6 EPL club Aston Villa this year.
(Note: Lichaj played both rightback and leftback last year in his first loan of the season to Lincoln City. Aston Villa however see him as both a rightback and a centerback.)
Should Lichaj earn consistent playing time he would arguably–nay, easily be–the most accomplished American defender in the EPL since Carlos Bocanegra. And, in our opinion, he should have a lot more press right now, especially given the new three-year deal he just inked.

Dang. Tough decision.
As of now, I'm thinking it's between. Chelsea, Arsenal, and Man City (no order)
-
Tottenham
-
Liverpool.
Aside from being the most decorated English club, they have the angriest fans in the world:
The club's supporters have been involved in two major tragic events. The first was the Heysel Stadium disaster, in which 39 Juventus fans were killed. They were penned into a corner by Liverpool fans who charged in their direction, the sheer number of fans cornered caused a wall to collapse. After the final UEFA laid the blame for the incident solely on the fans of Liverpool.
During an FA Cup semi-final in 1989 between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, 96 Liverpool fans died due to overcrowding in what became known as the Hillsborough Disaster. The Sun newspaper published an article entitled "The Truth", in which it claimed that Liverpool fans had robbed and urinated on the dead and had attacked the police.
We have so much to learn...
-
only root for liverpool if you would like to drown on a sinking ship.
tottenham will be in the champions league group stage this year if they can win a 3rd round qualifier.
man city will be in the europa league and shoiuld have a good run. man city also has the best uniforms. i started following them back when they signed claudio reyna and kind of fell away until the new arab billionaire bought the club and has gone on a spending spree matching chelsea before their run in the EPL.
tottenham beat man city late in the schedule to finish 4th in the league and grab the champions league slot for the EPL.
-
and Tottenham host Manchester City on 'opening day', August 14th 06:45 CST. you chould choose the winner of that game. :dunno:
-
Liverpool sounds enticing for sure...
-
Always been EMALP myself. Would highly suggest. Steven Gerrard is one of the most fun players to watch OAT.
-
Dont sellout. Fulham needs you.
-
who's the new scouser manager? hodgson?
-
Well we told you Eric Lichaj is a prospect on both rear flanks.
Lichaj started for Villa in a friendly Sunday against League One side Petersborough. Villa came away with a 3-2 win.
Beyond heading in the game-winner, Lichaj went 90+ at left back for the Villains.
TSG will say it for the first time now. Lichaj will start over 10 games for Villa this year across multiple competitions.
…and we’ll say it again for the umpteenth time: Lichaj should have gotten more than a cup of coffee from Bob Bradley during the 2010 qualifying cycle.
Oh and one more note on the friendly: Villa went with a starting defense of: Friedel (G) and Lichaj, Richard Dunne, James Collins, Habib Beye…that’s pretty darn close to first string there.

I truly only ask the BITB for help, and the goEMAW illuminati is pretty BITB.

Pick a perennial relegation fighter. Don't pick the big teams cause that's too easy. Don't pick Everton, Fulham, Tottenham, Aston Villa or others cause they always finish comfortably in the middle and that gets boring after a couple months. Don't pick West Ham just because of an "ok" movie. Picking a relegation contender? That takes balls and will provide excitement all season as they fight to stay up. So pick from:
Blackburn (if you ever go to England you can get tickets no problem for this team)
Wigan (their coach did the studio work for ESPN, pretty cool guy)
Wolves (boring but their coach is a drunk irishman)
Bolton (has an American in Stuart Holden)
Sunderland (kinda good, but underachieves)
or be really ballsy and pick one of the newly promoted teams: Blackpool(first time ever in the Premiership) or West Brom(always getting relegated and promoted). Don't pick Newcastle cause their fans are idiots.
-
^^^
valid point, but I would kinda like to choose someone that has a prayer of winning the league.
-
Forget the whole thing. You're not going to need made-up hobbies like this once you're at KSU.
-
^^^
valid point, but I would kinda like to choose someone that has a prayer of winning the league.
For the fans of those teams, not getting relegated is like winning the league. Imagine how we would feel if K-State was in danger of getting relegated to Conference USA............oh wait
-
Blackpool is my choice however do not recommend to anyone because they well be relegated this season. Their manager is quite funny and straight forward. They do play an attacking style under Holloway. They also have nice tangerine unis.

It's between chelsea, arsenal, and liverpool. Love arsenals cannon on the logo deal.
-
It's between chelsea, arsenal, and liverpool. Love arsenals cannon on the logo deal.
if you are choosing between those 3 i would take arsenal. they have the best manager and young talent in the league. also they are the easiest on the eyes when it comes to style of play. but if you want to root for the league champ i don't see how chelsea loses the crown this season.
-
I think most all of us can agree to just say no to ManU

Plus best uniforms IMO.
-
tottenham is a good team to follow imo
young talent like bale, lennon, rose, dos santos
good players like ledley king, defoe, gomes, modric
plus a 4th place finish from last year and a great draw to better our chances to get farther in the CL

Peter Crouch = Timmy. But are you seriously watching the same match? Should be 5-0 now. Spurs will probably end up losing in typical fashion.
Shots so far are 12(5) to 4(1)...
-
P.S. - Joe Hart absolutely killed it that half. Nightmare for Shay Given...
-
? not sure what you are getting at? never said City shouldn't have lost this match already. but ever since that shot off the post City has been able to get back into the game.
hey City, how many hundreds of millions of our gas dollars are you going to spend and still settle for having rough ridin' Sean Wright Phucking Phillips on the pitch? seriously, wtf? what a waste of space.
-
thank Christ. SWP get the eff out.
lulz @ Bale. how the eff do you miss from there. having a fresh set of legs there is no excuse to miss that.
increds covering by Kompany 2 minutes later.
come on City. let's just have the 1 point and keep a main rival for a top four spot from getting 3 at home

keeper fumbles the ball into his own goal after holding the Ars for 45 minutes a man down. and essentially playing 2 men down for the last 10/15 minutes after a dude who took a ball in the face could hardly stand up. stupid substitutions for Liverpool left them w/ no options.

Milner to Manchester City :pbj:
i'm still not sold on him but he should provide some balance in the midfield. i still think City management should have completely rebuilt their back 4 instead of wasting time and money on attacking players. (sigh) if Joe Hart can do what he did in goal the rest of the season then we don't need a back 4 :dunno:
-
Milner will be good for city.
Spurs were blocked by city re: a move for richards. I'm not sure why we would want him anyways, Bale abused him for 90 min.
We are making a 11 mil bid for Loic Remy from Nice. Would be great if that happened, as we need any depth that we can get up front.

Why would you want to do a 4-5-1? Defoe and Crouch are not the type of strikers that can play by themselves up front. Maybe when you play Inter in the Champions League it would be worth it, but if you do that in the Premiership you won't score many goals.
-
i am really hoping we get van der vaart, he would let us run some 4-5-1, which i think would accentuate our midfield talent (as long as modric can recover soon)

im pretty much just talking about the CL, trying something different against non-epl teams, but if healthy, defoe would probably be alright by himself up front, or pavlyuchenko
something like this for epl matches would be pretty nice though (assuming defoe would be out for a while)
gomes
corluka dawson king BAE
lennon bale
van der vaart modric
pavlyuchenko crouch

tottenham w/ another poor result against a relegation side :woot:
city, another draw. shocking
blackpool w/ another road win (2 out of 3) sitting in top 4 after 4 rounds :surprised:

Essien is back and leading Chelsea back to the promised land!!

we are such a garbage side right now, and modric goes down
good thing we got van der vaart, but i still can't believe we didnt pick up a striker
-
Essien is back and leading Chelsea back to the promised land!!
i give him another 5 weeks before he goes down w another season ending injury. no need to worry though if you are a Chelsea fan because the rest of the EPL is a joke and Roman has purchased a fine team; unlike the Arab idiots running City.

very happy that he didnt break his leg
i say that we bring him in aroung the 60th or even later, because he is way to valuable to rush back

Chelsea's weak early schedule is going to bite them in the kiester as the travel to Manchester to take on City Sat morning. this is a huge early season game for the Citizens. look for a brace from Milner as Tevez terrorizes the weak aging central defense of the visiting Londoners.
-
Nah, I'd look more for Man City fans to have their spirits crushed once again. Unless of course Terry plays like he has been the past 6 months. Then yes, they'll tear our defense a new one.
-
City has 3 fit defenders. What a bunch of idiots, buying so many attacking players. Drogba is going to rape them, unfortunately.
-
Blue Moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for do wah wah wah
And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper, "Please adore me"
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold
TEVEZ
-
F'n Tevez!! ERGGGG. Hopefully the team will finally take it of cruise control and wake up a bit.
-
Drogba w/ an absolutely ridiculously world class finish to beat Arsenal in an all too predictable outcome.
City/ Chelsea could run away w/ the league :crossfingers:

-
I thought Alex's goal was so much better. What a strike! (930 in that video)
that goal happens a thousand times a year. still cool but it was ultimately bad defense: a horrible wall-setup on the free kick
Drogba's goal was an exhibition of athleticism and concentration: a goal that no matter how good the defense was unstoppable.

:woot: oh yeah baby. an away Manchester City win coupled with a United & Chelsea draws makes mcmw happy. the Citizens scored 3 times in the last 25 minutes to secure victory @ Blackpool. golden boot race now topped by Tevez who got 2 today

it really is a miracle where we are in the standings after the terrible run we've had
luckily we are somewhat back on track after beating fulham

spurs down 4-0 at halftime almost comes back only to lose 4-3. what happened?
well we were completely blown out in the first half, assou ekotto/bassong played awful
but in the second half, gareth bale (<3) scored a hat trick by hitting a wicked goal in the 50' and two in the 90' to end the game 4-3
one of the most amazing displays of soccer by one person i have seen in recent memory

unfortunately we will see that gigantic pile of eff jermaine jenas, since huddlestone is out
might as well play the 4-5-1 and let bale do his thing
-
spurs falling apart in the league
manchester derby today. huge game for boys in City blue. win this and hope for a Chelsea draw vs Fulham and we're right back in it. a huge game for Silva for City wins it for them and a big day for Clint Dempsey for Fulham holds Chelsea at bay.
:crossfingers:

looks like City will be happy w/ a top 4 finish and qualify for champions league next year. hopefully that will mean they don't have to overpay for players and bring down the market a little bit worldwide.
predicting now that Chelsea will wrap up the league with 4 games to go. that is they will have a 13 pt lead w/ 4 to go. :frown:
la liga is where the action will be this year. barca and madrid play the weekend after t-giving. :pbj:

EPL is getting interesting
Chelsea is crashing out. City is climbing. United is looking like champions (eff). Arsenal is looking like boys. And Tottenham is hanging in there. It's nice having EPL around this time of year. As the other leagues all take Christmas breaks the EPL doubles up and plays an extra game.
Holden (American) scored an unbelievable winner for surprising 6th place Bolton over the weekend (http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2010/12/americans-abroad-weekend-rewind.html#more)
-
where are our Fulham fans? our you guys ready to fire that stupid eff of a coach, Mark Hughes? dude is the kind of the draw? w/ Manchester City last year and Fulham this year he must have set some record for most games managed w/o winning or losing. jfc :chainsaw:

what is wrong with chelsea? from what i gathered from our sunday match, they are having distribution problems when it comes to playing their strikers through
they dominated possession but still couldnt find the net but once

life in the EPL is good for Stu Holden:
To the accolades that have been allocated to Owen Coyle this season we may add that he, apparently, has been responsible for the signing of the year. Because analysis of all the match ratings awarded by our readers after each Premier League game this season suggests that the best player so far this term has been Stuart Holden, the midfielder whom Bolton picked up from Houston Dynamo for nothing last January.

do you think that teves leaving will push super mario into a more impactful role?

only Balotelli will be able to push himself into a more impactful role. he went off hurt yesterday. but his biggest obstacle is the mind rough ridin' he subjects himself to every time he steps on the pitch.

spurs in 4th place!
city in 1st :curse:
-
United is technically in 1st w/ better GD and 2 games in hand. the Gooners can also jump City w/ 3 pts in their game in hand. right now I see City in 3rd which is not a bad spot to be in. they dropped 3 pts at home to Everton last week which would have been nice. but they won their last 2 outscoring Villa and Newcastle 7-1 in the process.
Balotelli with the hat trick (2 penalties) against Villa.
it's lining up for an exciting 2nd half of the EPL: the top 5 are only separated by 5 points.

Manchester City is garbage. They buy all those players and strikers just so they can play for 0-0 draws with the bigger teams.

saturday:
arsenal home to wigan
united home to birmingham
spurs away at newcastle
city away at villa
monday:
chelsea away at bolton
some good fixtures for the top 5. United & Arsenal should win easy but the other 3 contenders will struggle to get 3 points.
last month City beat Villa 4-0 in Manchester.
another tough one for the Blues going to Stu Holden's Bolton club who have been surprising this year but slipping lately. Chelsea already 5 points off the pace for 3rd place need this one badly. Bolton in 7th spot need this one to stay in contention for Europe.
-
well tune up games for the top 4, and spurs face caroll-less newcastle side
hopefully the yids can manage to put a good game together, but assou-ekotto and wilson palacios aren't 100%, so hopefull bale and rafa can get something going

this is going to be a fun weekend
torres is probably going to score against the scousers weak back line
-
Wish the game was at Liverpool, would be way more intense.
-
lololol arsenal and manu
-
city again has a chance to make things interesting as they face united this weekend.
why does chelsea suck so bad? torres didn't do crap against his former team. lol at chelsea bandwagoners :bwpopcorn:
a couple more americans joined EPL clubs. Michael Bradley went to Villa and Jermaine Jones (really german) joined Blackburn I think. Bradley hasn't debuted yet but should soon.
-
good ol' chelski
i really didn't watch enough of the match to see why they are having trouble recently, but i hope we can jump them this weekend
i'm really happy that bradley is getting a shot at villa, and hopefully before too long we will see some more americans go to england
-
Chelsea sucks because they have no width. Malouda is their only winger and he's not even a true winger. When they were dominating back in 2004-6 they had Robben, Joe Cole and a couple other dudes to play out wide.
I expect City/United to be 0-0. They don't have very good chemistry to break down the bigger teams, so Mancini usually has them sit back and defend for their lives.
Also excited to see Bradley play. He's tough and strong, two traits that can help you in England.
-
i bet mancini is just dying to play 3 holding mids every match
forza azzurri!

welcome back Chelsea FC. nice win over United. go Arsenal, only 4 pts down w/ a game in hand. anyone but United. City losing grip on top 4 spot which would be humiliating. :(
-
tottenham can take a lead for 4th on sunday as we play wolves, but i am kinda expecting chelsea to stay up. hope citeh keeps slipping up so we can get back to champs next season :eye:

My director (boss of my boss) is a huge manchester fan. needless to say, he was cryin about bad officiating during their loss to my blues :emawkid:

are there no United fans on here to gloat? again no one picks United to win the league and here they are 7 points up w/ 7 to play. Arsenal has a game-in-hand.
at least there is a race for the Champion's Leage qualifying. also some intriguing FA Cup matches looming. and the Chelsea/United quarter-final in the CL :driving:
-
anyone but arsenal at this point, please. would love another chelsea meltdown to close things out, since spurs obviously isn't going to get that automatic qualifier spot now

The Premiership is crap this year, if the other teams don't start giving us competition I'll have to use the ku talking point that the conference/league didn't prepare us for the dance/Champions League.

will probably still be europa bound

hahaha rough ridin' arsenal
what a great game.
Aaron Lennon clearly made the difference when he came on for Bale, and Van der Vaart returned to form. Could have asked for a much better performance out of Gomes, but the Nasri goal was hidden by Van der Vaart until in was right in front of the keeper. Modric continues to be my favorite spur, as he commands possession in a huge way.
Game in hand, and hopefully we can get the results that we need to knock Man City down to Europa play again.

don't really like our chances, especially now that torres has broken his drought. just saying that it seems like we have dropped an astounding number of points against teams teetering on the edge of the drop zone, and we always play much better against top teams
honestly see 2-1 chelsea this weekend

honestly see 2-1 chelsea this weekend
damn it - nice work. would really like the last 120 seconds or so of each half back.
-
:chainsaw:Blues be on the hunt!!!!!
-
chelsea, if you're gonna rip my heart out, at least beat united next week
i honestly hate gomes so much, he has lost us two or three games this season
-
chelsea coming out of no where. with a win next week over united they will take over 1st place in the table. not sure how i feel about that. it's at old trafford so it is unlikely. even if they don't get it done they have done amazing just to get back in the race.

city vs tottsy tomorrow. city can put a nail in the coffin of spurs champions league dreams and assure their own spot in the qualifying round. city could have put themselves in great position for a top 3 spot and a guaranteed position in the group stage of UEFA CL with a win on Saturday. but they blew a 1-0 halftime lead at Everton. a win tomorrow would put them 2 points behind the Arsenal for that 3rd place spot.
chelsea @ united yesterday  united scored 30 seconds into the game and never looked back. they need a draw in their next game to win the league title. chelsea would have been in the driver's seat w/ a victory.
fa cup final Saturday: City vs Stoke. stoke coming off a huge upset win against the Ars over the weekend.
-
you guys will win. no doubt in my mind.
bale out for the rest of the season :goodbyecruelworld:

This Liverpool game is gettin' ugly. 3-0 Liverpool over Fulham after 17 minutes.
:horrorsurprise:
And it's at Craven Cottage
-
damnit spurs. they've won one of their last twelve. drawn six of eight. :goodbyecruelworld:
i get fuzzy on all the logistics of europa league - can this be one of those weird instances where sixth place in the epl doesn't get you in? seems like it would be a proper KITN.
oh yeah, :goodbyecruelworld:

i get fuzzy on all the logistics of europa league - can this be one of those weird instances where sixth place in the epl doesn't get you in? seems like it would be a proper KITN.
could happen. but doubtful http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premier_League
As of the 2009–10 season qualification for the UEFA Champions League changes, the top four teams in the Premier League qualify for the UEFA Champions League, with the top three teams directly entering the group stage. Previously only the top two teams qualified automatically. The fourth-placed team enters the Champions League at the play-off round for non-champions and must win a two-legged knockout tie in order to enter the group stage.[23] The team placed fifth in the Premier League automatically qualifies for the UEFA Europa League, and the sixth and seventh-placed teams can also qualify, depending on the winners and runners-up of the two domestic cup competitions. If one of the cup winners qualifies for Europe through their league position, the sixth-placed team in the Premier League will qualify for the Europa League unless a runner-up qualifies instead. If both of the cup winners qualify for the Champions League through their league position, the sixth and seventh-placed teams in the Premier League will qualify for the Europa League if neither runner-up takes a spot. If either domestic cup competition is contested between teams outside the top four league positions, the winner will automatically qualify for the UEFA Europa League regardless of their final league position, and the runner-up will not qualify. A further place in the UEFA Europa League is also available via the Fair Play initiative. If the Premier League has one of the three highest Fair Play rankings in Europe, the highest ranked team in the Premier League Fair Play standings which has not already qualified for Europe will automatically qualify for the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round.[24]

if City beats Stoke on Saturday for the FA Cup then 6th place def goes to Europa

im certain i dont know what you're talking about :blindfold:

modric's miss was at least more of the "bite your fingernails" variety than the "kick the dog" situ we got out of crouch. we gave them way too much space though - could see trouble brewing a mile away.
*disclaimer: I have a mancrush on modric and cannot be objective.
-
there's no way crouch could do anything to stop that ball from going in the net. he either doesn't stick his leg out and let's a city player tap it in or he sticks his leg out and the ball bounces off him in the net. no win situ.
modric outright choked.
-
*disclaimer: I have a mancrush on modric and cannot be objective.
-
agreed on the crouch thing - the real trouble was upstream. guess i'd have to watch again on the modric deal. should've scored (and would've been far better than the og was bad), but was by no means on the level of a choke job. there were a couple of times city had easier chances (think it was silva that passed to cudicini on a 1v1) - spurs prolly should've lost by more as far as quality chances.
oh well - such goes the second half of the season or so. been through a lot worse

See that ludicrous display last night?

Half time: City 1 Stoke 0.

Congrats on the little trophy, little bro. Only took a 350 million pound investment to win the FA Cup.
Can't wait until the offseason when City bids for Messi, Ronaldo, Kaka and Iniesta and get turned down by all of them and have to settle on another Gareth Barry or James Milner.

http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/290210-chelsea-fighting-with-real-for-neymar?eref=twitter_feed
07:45 AM ET 06.15 | Chelsea will find out next week whether they can sign the exciting Brazilian striker Neymar without triggering a $64 million buy-out clause. Chelsea had hoped to sign Neymar for around $43 million but there are indications that Real might offer close to $57 million for the 19-year-old, who is a favorite of Roman Abramovich.

Keeping up? It took 300 million pounds to get to United's level, while United do it with 19 and 20 year olds that grew up 15 miles from the stadium. I mean seriously, why even try?

it will probably show in this thread for the remainder of the season, but I have an unhealthy man crush on balotelli that started at inter (even though i root for napoli in serie a) so I always like to see him do well. add in the fact that I hate man u and jonny evans, and this is a pretty great result.
also, spurs take full points away from blackburn :excited:

Statistically, it was Manchester United's poorest at home to Manchester City since 1926, defensively their nastiest at Old Trafford in the league since 1930. Not since the Great Depression had they let in six. Now a new sense of despondency has taken hold. Given sleepless nights by City after a 5-1 derby defeat at Maine Road in 1989, Ferguson may return to the ranks of the insomniacs. For that, among other things, he can thank another who cannot get to his bed. Whatever the burns damage to his fixtures and fittings, however, Mario Balotelli has scarred United rather more.

Spurs won't get 3 points @ Fulham.
Newcastle have a tough home game against Everton to remain unbeaten and in the top 4.
Chelsea and City are both away and no road game is a given.
Arsenal and United both get easy home wins.

Scott Parker. And watch it again. I'm pretty sure it was an accident. Of course you never can tell with Balotelli.

the first foot was accidental, the second one was a clear stamping motion.
i wish i could laugh at his antics, but i just can't

meh. i guess he deserves some sort of punishment. if he wanted to stamp the guy you think the guy with the most beautiful set of feet in Europe would have the accuracy to do so. i'll go with the theory he pulled back at the last second with great will and intent.
even if he does sit 4 games they'll still be well clear of the rest of the league when he returns .

http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/Disciplinary/NewsAndFeatures/2012/balotelli-charge-230112
The FA has today charged Manchester City forward Mario Balotelli with violent conduct following an incident in his side’s home game against Tottenham Hotspur.
Balotelli was involved in an incident with Tottenham’s Scott Parker during Manchester City’s 3-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 22 January 2012.
Balotelli has until 6pm on Wednesday 25 January 2012 to respond to the charge.
Manchester City forward subject of retrospective action.

Now that we're out of the Carling Cup, Champions League, and FA Cup, we should be 100 percent focused on the Premier League. And we go and lose to Everton again.

Not true.
City's GD-41
United's GD-35
Still much closer than I'm comfortable with.
-
yeah, i don't really care about GD at the moment.
United closed a gap that I wasn't so sure they could.

I said I thought it was inevitable, but deep down I was skeptical. They were in unreal form early on. 1-6 hurt, too. :frown:

So what happens this weekend? Does United win at Stamford Bridge in the league for the first time since 2002? Does Chelsea roll over and die? Does Chelsea manage to get it and save their quest to not end up like Arsenal?
-
i definitely see the mancs winning at chelsea
i think between spurs and pool, its going to be a draw, as it's at anfield and andy carroll seems to be making strides
-
With Cole out at left back, Valencia is going to make someone look really stupid, a lot. And I think Nani and Rooney should be back.
-
omg what a game. truly enthralling the whole way through.
can't wait for 'pool-spurs tomorrow.

Horse crap penalty calls. :chainsaw: Very clutch goal from Chicharito. Incredible Torres to Mata goal. Okay with this result.

Always penalties. Evra's was the weaker of the two, though.
The Mata finish was just unreal.

Always penalties.
Probably true. Still disappointing.

i cannot rough ridin' wait for tomorrow

I think the kid that gets killed in Eastern Promises was a Chelsea fan.

No Derby County is being like a Cat fan...rural and small towny...at least that's what I tell myself as I'm stuck cheering for a Championship League team in the middle of the table.

I think being in a BCS conference is the equivalent of being in the Premiership. Sucks that ku football will soon be relegated to League 2, possibly even the Conference.

Eh, it's a weird ratio.

oh please oh please blue moon. one week and counting. lol. i'm not worried. does anyone think it will be closer than the last time these two met in league play. i guess if the ref cheats (FA Cup style) and make City play with 10 players then United might stand a chance.

The first goal is crucial. If City score first, the environment will go from electric to an impossible level of bedlam. If United were to score first, I think City will begin to feel the pressure a bit more and maybe even feel defeated. Can't wait for this one.

good game :frown:
-
wow, what a great match. monster performances by aguero, zabaleta, toure, etc... must feel pretty good, mcmw
i kept waiting for the usual late BS united goal which thankfully never came (disclaimer: don't really care for either side), would've really been cruel for how much city dominated them

Question for people who are more soccery than I am: Is that goal thought of as incredible skill, or just a very lucky strike? I mean, I feel like you see similar attempts all the time that go well wide or high. Is it like basketball when someone shoots a half court shot, or a fade away off-balance guarded 3?
-
I'm no expert first of all. That strike takes great skill, but lots of luck was involved IMHO. Cristiano would have a hard time duplicating that and he's the second best player in the world.
-
cisse is one of the most underrated in the world as far as pure striking skill, so i will go with that.
yes, there is always some luck when a ball is struck, like how the ball is spinning when it is struck, what angle, etc. but he meant to go outside foot and catch cech off guard. does take luck, but the intent was there, imo.

holy rough ridin' crap
Just saw the third goal while flipping through channels.
-
Holy crap. That was one of the most amazing finishes i've seen in any sport. Man City with 2 goals in stoppage time to win the title. They just announced Man Utd had won and Man City scored immediately after that. Manchini looked like he was in a complete daze during the interview.

unbelievable effort by MCFC. seriously. 44 shots to 3... at least 75% possession... granted, it was the rangers, but omg. Agüero

I'm numb. Really cruel sport.

I've been a MUFC fan for 13 years, as long as I've watched the Premiership. I live in Kansas, hell even when I lived in Boston and Maine, I have yet to meet a MCFC fan. The best man in my wedding is British, I've worked with dozens of brits, still never met a City fan. I've met a Leicester fan, I've met a Wolverhampton, I've met a Villa fan, hell even a West Brom fan, never a MCFC supporter. After getting over the shock of what happened I am partially stunned but thought the scene at Etihad was pretty cool, I'm sure if I had to be surrounded by limey city fuckers I'd feel differently. I was pissed last week, but Sunday felt much differently.
I still hate Liam Gallagher

I feel good for the true, loyal City fans. They deserve this. But why like that? 45 seconds away. Really cruel way to do it.

Actually forget what I said. Born losers handle a little bit of winning like this. Tevez is such a greasy fuckhead, I bet he smells too. I'm sure he's just a couple of years from being a fat, burned out coke head like his buddy Maradona.

How many weeks until he starts whining again and once again asks for a transfer? What will his excuse be now that his family lives in Manchester?

That was the battle of the world's two ugliest kits. BTW, third place getting a trophy, medals, and a winners celebration makes Alec Baldwin furious.

I'm trying to get into soccer. Explain to me how the EPL was just decided, like, a day ago but there is a Champions League final game today. Doesn't the EPL top 4 or whatever get to go into the champions league or is this an entirely different set of teams.

The top 4, well in this case the top 3 and the 6th place team, in the EPL season that was just completed qualifies for the Champions League that starts in the fall. The Champions League runs the span of the entire European club season. So the final that took place today was for the 2011-12 Champions League.

So the final that took place today was for the 2011-12 Champions League.
so it goes on during the EPL? was the chelsea team that won today the same one that didn't win the EPL or different players? why did the 6th place team get in? I'm going to figure this out and pick a team this year I think.

Results from the EPL and other European leagues this season determine who qualifies for the Champions League next season. (Last year Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Arsenal all qualified for this season's Champions League.)
The top three are automatic qualifiers for the group stage. Fourth qualifies for a sort of play-in game of two legs. However, since Chelsea won the CL this season and got 6th in the EPL, they are taking the place of Tottenham, who got fourth.
-
But they use their current players and not last seasons? And when did the other games happen? During the EPL?
-
They use current players. And the two competitions occur during pretty much the same time period. For premier league teams, there is Premier League games, Champions League/Europa League, FA Cup, and the Carling Cup (League Cup.) The games are just scheduled around each other. This is part of what makes European league seasons much more grueling than MLS. Sometimes three games a week. Fifth place in the league qualifies for the next season's Europa League except for this season. It will be fourth place Tottenham.
-
This whole rough ridin' sport is racist
-

Same players. The exact same Chelsea team that finished 6th in the EPL this year won this years Champions League. They qualified for the 2011-12 Champions League by finishing 2nd in the EPL in 2010-11. And yes the EPL and all other European leagues are played concurrently with the Champions League. Here's the deal with Chelsea. They finished 6th in the EPL because their season started off horribly. They hired a manager who was like 35 years old, he didn't put up with the crap of old sorry ass players like John Terry, the problem is that those same old players basically rolled over to spite the manager. They were getting buried in the EPL but they were doing fine in the UEFA because they were playing bad clubs in the early stages. They fired the manager mid season and turned their season around, just in time to face the better teams in the Champions League. All that and frankly they were insanely lucky, both teams that played today were. As much as I can't stand them, the class of Europe this year were Madrid and Barcelona, Manchester City close behind. If the Champions League was not a knockout format they wouldn't have sniffed the title.

Only Liverpool is racist.

Just the Spaniards, Italians, and John Terry. But the Italians are super racist.

Don't do it, sd.

Oh yeah. I forgot about John Terry. Super racist.

this helped me when i first got into soccer.
EPL plays their games on weekends, and champions league plays their midweek.
steve dave i would recommend looking into arsenal, tottenham, or my personal favorite Fulham. i think you would enjoy arsenal the most though.

Getting in to soccer will be a great investment of your time and happiness.
Let's help steve dave pick an EPL team... Manch United are very cool. Liverpool are very racist. Chelsea are kind of racist. I know a guy that likes Arsenal and he's a total dweeb, so I don't like Arsenal.
I would recommend picking a Manchester club and then a relegation-threatened squad to root for, too.

What are the mascots?
-
What are the mascots?
I know you aren't really interested, but strangely enough some.teams, "clubs" to be precise have nicknames and mascots, some don't. Chelsea has a lion, but aren't called the Chelsea Lions. Manchester United has a Red Devil and they are known as the Red Devils but not the Manchester United Red Devils.
-
What are the mascots?
Each club has their own kind of fan-generated nicknames for each team, but there aren't any official mascots.
Rooting for Manchester United or Chelsea is great if you don't have a soul. Arsenal is the team of hipsters everywhere who don't want to root for a team outside the traditional top 4. Every EPL fan says Man City is ruining soccer by buying all the best players (they just had some oil barons from Saudi Arabia invest a fuckton of money on them recently), but they were openly rooting for City when the title was up for grabs between them and United. Everton loves America (Tim Howard is goalie, Landon Donovan came over twice on loan) and is very comparable to EMAW in a lot of ways. Fulham and Tottenham are good choices too, although Tottenham is likely about to lose all their best players and Fulham will likely lose Clint Dempsey to one of the big clubs. Newcastle and Aston Villa have insane fans but generally dysfunctional management, everyone kinda hates Sunderland for reasons nobody can really articulate, Swansea is a great story (first Wales team in EPL), Stoke City is kind of a trendy underdog pick, and mostly everyone kinda gives a collective "MEH" at Norwich/West Brom/Wigan/QPR. Wolverhampton would've been a fantastic underdog team to root for if they could've kept things going, but their ownership just plummeted them into the ground and they just got relegated.
Liverpool is basically the Nebraska of EPL teams. Red, obnoxious, smelly, and extremely racist :sdeek:

There's a lot wrong with this, the greatest of which is comparing EMAW to rough ridin' Everton. EMAW is no where near that helpless. There are Everton fans in their 20s who not only know they are going to die without seeing Everton winning anything but they know their unborn children will face the same fate. I mean why not compare us to Leeds or Crystal Palace?

:jerk:
It's a better analogy for EMAW basketball than football, I'll admit that. But you're also undervaluing what Everton does every year. They go on a shoestring budget and finish in an above average position like 7th or somewhere around there just about every year. They'll occasionally hit gold like in 1995 or 1985 but generally won't sniff the top that much. Which is what EMAW does in both sports.
Also, comparing Everton to Leeds or Crystal Palace shows you know hardly anything about them. Everton hasn't been relegated since rough ridin' 1954, which is a longer streak than most of the big clubs including Man U.
-
To help SD and others, I decided to compare EPL to Big 12 teams, past, present, and (possibly) future :gocho:
Yes, I know that the rivalries don't really fit in these analogies, I focused more on which programs are closest to each other.
Manchester City: Oklahoma State. New money abounds and is quickly putting both teams into the top levels of their respective sports. Hardly any history to speak of before they got their cash injection. Everyone wags their fingers at them for ruining their respective sports by buying great teams, but not so secretly hopes that they beat the crap out of Man United/Texas anyway.
Manchester United: Texas They are the Joneses. They have the money, the prestige, and the gigantic fanbase, 10% of which has actually stepped foot in Austin/Manchester. Always perceived to be a force to be reckoned with every year based on money and talent availability alone. Is somewhat unsettled by the rise of Manchester City/Oklahoma State and hates the crap out of the more blue collar Oklahoma/Liverpool fanbase(s).
Arsenal: Notre Dame. Very successful historically, but has underachieved in recent years (especially on Notre Dame's end, Arsenal's troubles aren't nearly as bad). Massive nationwide/worldwide fanbases and will always be relevant barring a major disaster.
Tottenham Hotspur: Missouri. History oscillates between very solid and mediocre/bad, but is a generally strong brand today. Has become extremely competitive as of late and started to crack the upper echelon of their leagues. Fanbase used to getting kicked in the nuts. Future prospects uncertain at best, dim at worst. Despises the crap out of Arsenal/Texas.
Newcastle United: Clemson. A program generally regarded as high-major, but hasn't won anything of substance since before the 1990's. Prone to very strange bouts of management/coaching. Underachieves way more than they should. Each season has a high potential for large amounts of popcorn.
Chelsea: Florida State. A very solid program that is very new money. Waited until the latter part of the 20th century to start amassing titles. Large bandwagon fanbase and an embarrassing wealth of resources, yet sometimes underachieves despite possibly having the most talented team in the nation/world.
Everton: EMAW. Deceptively strong history that nobody outside of the region really knows about (7th most successful club in English history, major success for emaw basketball before 1980's/DOD) to cement them as a solidly above-average program, overachieves every year in recent years while running on a budget that would bring a tear of joy to John Currie's eye. Fans are loyal and can make for a fierce home environment that absolutely nobody in the EPL likes playing in. Note: This analogy works much better for EMAW basketball than football in terms of history, but whatever.
Liverpool (I said Nebraska earlier to fire up sd, but it doesn't quite fit): Oklahoma. The most successful program in terms of titles since the start of the 20th century. Consistently dominate their league but has stumbled lately, if ever so slightly. Bandwagon is large but more contained to their respective regions than Man U or Chelsea. Racism is off the charts :shakesfist:
Fulham: West Virginia. Absolutely no history to speak of, but has recently vaulted to the big leagues in soccer/football. Is quickly gaining prominence and becoming upper-middle-class in their respective sports.
West Brom: Baylor. Both have a serviceable history but hadn't won crap in a LONG time until this year when they finished surprisingly high in the standings.
Swansea: TCU. Seemingly came out of nowhere (Wales, mid-major conferences) and hit the lottery to make it to the big leagues. Fanbase is small but loyal. Generally regarded as a cool underdog story by non-locals.
Norwich: Texas Tech. Quirky local fans, minimal history, and nobody ever really knows what the eff they're doing nor cares unless they come out of nowhere to shock people (like Norwich did in much of the 2nd half of this season/Tech did in 2008).
Sunderland: Texas A&M. Fans are loyal to a fault and are generally disliked by everyone else. Had some decent success early in their history, but hasn't been relevant in top flight competition for a long rough ridin' time.
Stoke City: Louisville. Has generally won eff-all in their history and is generally middling when it comes to big time football/soccer, but occasionally makes noise. Generally has deeper pockets than a number of programs with similar stature due to corporate investments.
Wigan: Iowa State. Absolutely nobody gives a crap except the locals. Can be a major pain in the ass to high-end teams at times.
Aston Villa: Nebraska. Fans are batshit and their history is very strong, but hasn't won anything of note since the late 1990's.
QPR: KU. Won some stuff back in the 1960's that nobody remembers. Largely irrelevant on a national scale. Facilities are low-end.
Bolton: Maryland. Hasn't won anything big since the 1950's, but had a period of relative competence from 2000 to 2010.
Blackburn: Colorado. Came out of nowhere and won a title in the 1990's and has a simultaneously solid yet turbulent history. Have been fighting to maintain even a semblance of relevance in recent years, and have generally failed.
Wolverhampton: Georgia Tech. Has had some surprisingly strong periods in their history, but have struggled to maintain national relevance in the 2000's.

thanks 42. can someone make a list of the fan generated nicknames? on BBC they always call teams weird names that makes it very difficult to figure out who they are talking about.
-
i hate you for making a viable comparison between mizzou and spurs
though i've always felt like spurs and emaw were close. angry, rabid fans with a permanent chip on the shoulder, small but loud home stadium, old tactical genius at the helm with not much time left on the sideline, generally trodden upon demeanor. there are good cases for both everton and spurs.

thanks 42. can someone make a list of the fan generated nicknames? on BBC they always call teams weird names that makes it very difficult to figure out who they are talking about.
i'll do my best
Arsenal - The Gooners. Can make French jokes because they have a strong French connection because of Arsene Wenger, plus they're huge cunty faggots.
Aston Villa - The Villains. That's pretty much it. They are always a fairly strong side until this year. Deserved to be relegated.
Blackburn Rovers - The Rovers/The Riversiders.
Bolton Wanderers - The Wanderers/The Trotters. Slight American connection with Stuart Holden.
Chelsea - The Blues, The Chavs (the second one is a common one that i've heard around Spurs fans from London. Chelsea fans aren't exactly favorites over there.) Also, they are called "Chelski" pretty often, due to the Russian connection via Roman Abramovich.
Everton - The Evertonians, the Toffies, The Blues. Stand up fanbase, and strong American connection due to Tim Howard and Landon Donovan.
Fulham - The Cottagers, and Fulhamerica is a popular one due to Clint Dempsey.
Liverpool - The Reds, The Scousers, The Bin Dippers (poor, uncivilized)
Manchester City - City, The Citizens. Also can be made fun of for a strong Arab connection because of the Sheikh (their owner), but that got them a PL title, so I don't think they'd complain.
Manchester United - The Red Devils, The Mancs, United.
Newcastle United - Magpies, The Toon, The Geordies (regional slang for people for the Tyneside region.)
Norwich City - The Canaries.
Queens Park Rangers - QPR, The Super Hoops, Hoops.
Stoke City - The Potters, Stoke.
Sunderland - The Black Cats, the Light Brigade (they play in the Stadium of Light)
Swansea City - Swans.
Tottenham Hotspur - Spurs, the Yids, the Jews, Spuds, Lillywhites. They have a Jewish identity because of the Tottenham area in North London (they are the TRUE North London Club.)
West Bromwich Albion - The Baggies.
Wigan Athletic - The Latics.
Wolverhampton Wanderers - Wolves.
Some of them aren't too exciting, and I'm sure I'm missing some. This was from memory, so feel free to correct me if I missed anything.
-
Who are/is Topman (sp?). Is that Tottenham and I'm just hearing Topman?

While it is true that the "Chelski" nickname was revitalized once Roman took over, it actually dates back to a 1930's newspaper headline announcing a Chelsea summer tour of Poland.

Like I said there will be generations of Everton fans who can only dream of lifting an FA Cup before they die. Leeds have won a league title and won the FA Cup since Everton has done any of this.
Please don't compare EMAW hoops to that perpetually meh side. I would trade some awful years if I knew there would be some brilliance mixed in, rather than knowing you're never going to win big. Everton is Texas Tech.

Everton is the 7th most successful English club in history, and you're going to compare them to Texas rough ridin' Tech ? I'm not going to argue that Everton has been prone to periods of prolonged mediocrity, but so has EMAW. My analogy, while not perfect, is viable, while yours isn't even close.

Yeah I was cringing the whole time while writing the Tottenham section since I like them and all. And yeah there are some parallels with Tottenham and EMAW, but I think if you looked at overall perception of the clubs by outsiders then Tottenham aligns better with Missouri. The fanbases aren't comparable, though, since Tottenham fans seem to be generally cool (except on TMB) and we all know about the collective idiocy of the Missouri fanbase.
