Title: Doomsday Prepers
Post by: BringBackEcoKat on July 13, 2015, 06:57:09 PM
So  as some of you know, my parents are prepers. They both follow the news pretty religiously, so they know how messed up the current world is. Really though, I understand where they are coming from and I myself have started collecting things that would come in handy if something like the depression were to ever happen again. My parents just have the means so they are able to prep at a more efficient level.

They have numerous guns and more ammo than they could probably use in a lifetime.
They have needles/alcohol/stitches/ anything that could be used for wounds.
They have enough food to last 5 years
They keep and melt down old coins for the real bronze in them so that they can be traded for the precious metal when the dollar collapses
They keep all broken jewelry so that it can be traded when the dollar collapses
They also bought more liquor than they could ever drink so that they can trade that too

Is this really that weird though? I have started stocking up on food and I have kept all of my broken jewelry just in case. I think that it's more unwise to not be a preper.

I think you know that I would be in big trouble with my parents if I disclosed their location, but I'll be in good ol' Western Kansas this weekend so I'll be sure to take some pictures.

if the dollar collapses, is anyone really going to care about metal?  seems like food and guns would be more valuable.

Title: Re: Doomsday Prepers

when did they start doing this
Title: Re: Doomsday Prepers
Post by: BringBackEcoKat on July 13, 2015, 07:20:25 PM
It's in the basement, It is surrounded by limestone so it should help protect against EMPs. We all have go-bags in our cars. During the depression, people were able to trade metals more efficiently actually. It kinda went to the barter system there for a while. They have antibiotics, painkillers, insulin,  basically any medication you could ever need because they are both in health care. They started doing this when the government started passing laws restricting guns.. so like 5 years ago? They will share, hence why they want me to keep my gas tank full at all times. They also left me a map in my car just in case it gets really crazy and I can't take I70.

Also, yes....weird AF.  I mean, there is plenty of bad crap that is waaaay more likely to happen than the fall of our govt or some other bullshit that would cause a western KS shootout over someone trying to take your bronze via EMP attack.  Maybe prep for those things?  Maybe don't live in fear?  Maybe quit weirding out the neighbors.  Maybe that brand of bullshit is a self fulfilling prediction?

I think they mostly just think that the dollar is going to fail. When they wanted me to get gas the other day though, it was because of the halt in trading in NYC so they thought that we were under a cyber attack. They also think that China might get upset with us for owing them a few billion dollars so they could attack.

what are their top 5 most likely events to lead to needing all their prepper stuff
1. Obama changes law and gets 3rd term
2. Sharia law
3. China Red Dawns us
4. Stock market crashes and ppl flock to western KS for bronze
5. Brown ppl become majority in USA

Personally, I think it's stupid not to prepare for anything. I have a fire extinguisher in my house not because I think that there will be a fire, but because if one does happen, I'll be ready for it.

I'm going to Mars with Richard Branson when crap goes down, so whatever.

Serious note though, your parents seem like stupid people (like all preppers that go to such lengths, nothing personal).  In their exotic doomsday scenario, their guns won't protect them from the unprepared masses for long, so they'll have wasted all this effort for a couple extra days of a shitty life.

So how much does it cost to insure all that extra stuff?  Do you insure it?  Does the insurance company have a list of prepper insured houses they will go after if the shtf?  Just a few thoughts...

I guess I don't understand the appeal of hoarding gold and silver and other precious metals in a SHTF scenario. What practical good are they?  They're heavy as crap and you can't eat it. Maybe melt it down to make bullets? Its useless as a "currency".  In a true breakdown the only currency will be food, medicine, booze and pussy.

A depression isn't the kind of SHTF scenario that you guys are making it out to be. The neighbors wouldn't come raid the Queen Winters clan for their canned corn. They'd be too busy becoming the modern-day Okies and getting out of one of the harshest regions of the United States in search of a paying job.

Yeah, I mean, I would think if you are in the market for low risk bonds, ones from us would be something easy to rely on.  If you want to see China panic, elect a tea partier that wanted us to default during 2008.

I helped an old woman dig some trash out of a dumpster last week and was rewarded by her giving me some free advice.

She told me that I needed to stock up a years worth of food for every member of my family because Obama is building FEMA camps in every state and those who aren't prepared will be shipped to one of these camps. 70% of people aren't prepared for what's going to happen.

But she never told me what was going to happen!

How would you procure half of the world's gold to back our money supply? How would you divvy up the gold into small enough units to fit the money supply? Where will all the gold come from when economic policy dictates an increase in the money supply? How would you promote growth in an economy where the money supply is very difficult to increase? How would you hedge against deflationary crises?

Too top heavy.  Too many zombies, unprepped neighbors, or Chinese soldiers on top of that thing while turning and going like 30mph or higher, and you are on your side.

How do you prep that last thing

Provo may be the new capital city

Fun Mormon fact:  They are all preppers due to some rule that they should have a yearish? supply of food.  House listings in Utah often advertise "cold storage".  It's usually just a concrete room in the basement but for food storage instead of a tornado shelter or whatever.  They cram the rooms full of canned food, bags of wheat, etc.  Lots of prepper stores around too.  One near my office has an underground bunker you can buy sitting in the parking lot.

The Matfield Green service area on the Turnpike was out of gas last night!  So, I went over to Cassoday to fill up and after zooming past the service area again I laughed at all the suckers still waiting by the pumps for a tanker truck that was supposed to show up at 9.  But that's how Doomsday starts.....you try to fill your car up, there's no gas, and while you're waiting for a mythical tanker truck to show up a wave of zombies overruns the place.  Admittedly I wasn't #PREPED very well for this scenario and neither was anyone else.

I helped my father-in-law butcher 35 chickens a few months ago.   He kept thanking me for helping.  I laughingly said it might be a useful skill to have if the zombie apocalypse happened (I had never butchered chickens before).  His buddy looks at me and says "well we're all preppers."  I look at my father-in-law and and he sheepishly smiles.  Me "oohh that's cool." and continue ripping chicken guts out.  Awkward I thought he was just trying to eat healthy by raising his own chickens.

He now has 3 meat goats in his backyard.

A savvy prepper would have pack goats instead of meat goats, so they can haul around your freeze dried food, and then when that runs out you can still eat them.

They'd be pretty tough by then so you'd need to make jerky.

Since Hillary has been on the scene, has the doomsday clock been moved back?   Na, hell no, since she's been in the Senate and SOS, it's been moved up.

What I would do for my family is not bounded by ethics.  Also, not even sure if ethics as we know them would continue in an apocalypse.

If trump was elected, they would have to do a daylight savings on that clock.  Fall back.  Just to have room to then advance as far forward as that clusterfuck would take us without crossing midnight.

Which fringe website is reporting this? The facts are there are 10 of like 47 programs still in existence. *Trump made cuts to 37 to give more money back to his friends in a very country first manner*

Anyone who can successfully turn one of the giant turbines that surround the cat ranch into our own personal power supply will get a reserved spot on the cat ranch during doomsday. The water pump runs on electricity and the backup generator can only last so long before we runs out of gas.

Water is kinda important on the high plains right?

I've seen my dad charge the battery on his lil red truck with a solar panel so maybe we are good? Doubt it though as he probably got it at Harbor Freight
