Man, feels good to win that one.
-
Was there a bigger turning point in our country? I don't think so.

Man, KK. Kinda harsh for some of our visitors. Maybe attach a spoiler alert next time.
-
I can't imagine being on the wrong side of that battle.

Why we ever let them back in the Union and become states again is beyond me, they should be on the same level as Puerto Rico and Guam.
-
The Civil War is the one where the North fought the SEC to abolish slavery, right?
-
Also I'm not one to get excited about the Preamble to the Constitution, but I am going to scream the ever living crap out that thing on the 18th. We truly are playing for America on the 18th.
-
Was a pretty easy win
-
Fun Fact- The "Southern Accent" did not exist until after the Civil War.
It was their way of saying "eff you" while their panties were in a sherman bow tie.

Head injuries.
I saw a news thing a couple years ago about a Seattle woman who got in a car wreck and all of a sudden spoke with a french accent. Would also explain basically everything else in the south since the civil war.
-
I think the best part about the whole thing was how leading up to the war the southerners were all absolutely convinced they were going to win despite being totally outmatched. Completely delusional.
-
I wish I had a time machine and could go back in time and watch Sherman burn that part of the country to the ground.
I'd also swing by Elmira Prison for a glimpse of justice at work on those sub-humans.
I would take my kids and show them, first hand how to deal with trash.

"Your work will be done when slavery's dark belt of hell no longer encircles a single hill or valley of Kansas."

Gives me chills when I read that. Very proud to share a small part of such a great legacy.

I heard from several reputable sources (A+) that we were even looking ahead to the Spanish-American War. Sucks to suck I guess Confeds.
-
it's true what they say about the civil war being brother on brother.
my grandfather fought for the free states in the civil war, his half brother fought for the south. so my grandfather shot his half brother in the face.

my sources confirm that some northerners were scared at the time the the civil war might be a "trap war".

I have heard the story of clams grandfather and it's even better than it sounds

The SEC actually knew they were outgunned, but believed they could win by fighting an insurgency campaign that would eventually sap the North's will to fight. They were kind of like the first Al Qaeda.

Also like Al Qaeda (or ISIS), the SEC are ignorant, America-hating religious fundamentalists. They appear fearsome, but fold like pool chairs when confronted with the superior firepower of the North.

Control the clock. Lots of short runs.

The south tried to pay the English to get involved and commit to their cause. Of course karma looks down at the kind of snake that would embrace the enemy of their enemy just to flip us the the proverbial roll damn tide.
-
(Moved this convo to this thread where it belongs.)
The War of Northern Aggression
That was the most common name for it in the south during the war. In other words, it was a tongue-in-cheek historical reference.
We here in the Free States call it the War of Southern Treason, which is accurate.
lol
While I am sublimely confident that I could steamroll you in a serious discussion about the era, I won't be commenting further on the subject for two reasons:
1.) This is a sports forum
2.) I refuse to be trolled.
Blah, blah. You already got steamrolled. Scoreboard:

I've never seen a confederate flag at a KSU tailgate. Doubt any SEC team can say that

Sometimes you gotta go no huddle hurry-up when running through open fields, but once you reach cover it's pretty much control the clock, disguise your coverage on defense and hunker down for the long haul.

I did some research on Memorial Day this year and found out that my great-great-great grandfather Marched to the Sea with his Ohio unit before he came to Kansas on the Homestead Act. What an awesome American life, huh?
-
I was named after my ancestor who fought in the Civil War. Capt. Fedor was in the Union
(of course) and kicked hillbilly slaver ass until his kicking leg was plumb wore out.
-
Just watched 12 years a slave the other night. I thought it was strange how the plantation owner was yelling "war eagle" as he whipped that girl but I get it now.

Just wanted to say thank Cdub for your states effort in the civil war. You left those racist hillbillys behind and we do not forgot that.

Good thing my family has been, and will always be, 100% slave free freedom loving Americans since we came over here from the old country

The cool thing about the civil war was that even if you like just got a little scratch on your elbow they were definitely going to chop the whole arm off.

And nobody could hit anything with those muskets so even though that guy was aiming right at you, pretty good chance it hits your buddy right in the face instead, and now its going to take him 20 minutes to reload so go ahead and take a breather.

Wrong. You are thinking of the Revolutionary War. The muskets in the War of Northern Aggression were rifled, and accurate out to a few hundred yards. And a skilled soldier good get off 5 or 6 rounds a minute.

Wait, which one was it where we fought the SEC and made the racists take down the Union Jack but nobody told those redneck assholes in Mississippi so Wright Thompson had to go film the riots last year?
:dunno:

Guys, is it true that Auburn is way more racist and redneck-y than the University of Alabama? And that "war eagle" is a racist confederate chant? My god, they make Ole Miss look like abolitionists.
-
A good move was when your buddy dropped from dysentery or Spanish flu or bayonet stabbings or whatever, you grab his socks and double up on socks. Boom, comfy feet.

Spanish Flu? Wrong century my friend.

Man, you guys remember when Davey Crockett kicked all that ass in The Civil War? That was awesome.
-
Have you guys ever heard a southerner denounce slavery and say that the south was wrong? I've always heard them say things like, "I know a lot more about the Civil War than you do, but I'm not going to take the tons to explain it to you." I think that is code for "I hate Abraham Lincoln."
Gonna win 'em all!

I enjoy the song. It's a shame that due to the South's poor vocabulary and subsequent inability to rhyme it was limited to four verses.

Boiled peanuts are more overrated than the SEC. And I know a lot about peanuts.
Gonna win 'em all!

pretty sure Sherman destroyed those trees a few years back too

Most definitely. Actually taught this stuff in class today. I won't post the gory pics of piles of amputated arms, though. This being a family blog and all.

How many more civil war centennial celebrations will we have before Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, or most of the SEC hires its first minority coach? And will he have to have a name like "Stonewall" Bo Jackson or "General" Lee?
-
I have a neighbor across the street who is from SEC country. Was down in his basement the other day and he's got this framed "Sons of the Confederacy" certificate and some genealogy stuff showing his SEC civil war ancestors. Not even kidding. It's like he's proud of it, but understands he's gotta keep it in the basement.

Stew has more vittles and less water. Only neanderthals serve squirrel SOUP. That is akin to serving crunchy vegetables and no cornbread. Unheard of in polite society.

Possibly the greatest American Admiral ever, David Farragut, won several decisive victories in the War of Southern Treason, including one in Alabama.
"He is remembered for his order at the Battle of Mobile Bay (which he won), usually paraphrased as "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" in U.S. Navy tradition"
Damn the Tigers, full speed ahead.

If I can be serious for a moment, not that I expect y'all to reciprocate.
I have lived all over the country at one time or another, and have actually been in all 50 states (and no, I have never been a truck driver, actually I am a mechanical engineer). I am fully aware of the the view the rest of the country has of the south, which has long been promulgated by TV and in the movies. While I admit there are definitely areas where your biases would be spot on, for the most part it is far from the truth. For instance, I spent about a year in southern Michigan on a long term project and I heard the N word more there than I did my entire life in the south. Whereas racism is rampant in large cities all over the country, you would find it curiously absent throughout the rural south. You see, we grow up together, play sports together, hang out together, and often live on the same streets.
It wasn't until I moved to Memphis that I felt the need to get a concealed carry permit. The racial antipathy here is very strong, and frankly it is coming from the black community. My neighborhood in middle class suburbia is unusually racially and culturally mixed because the international headquarters for FedEx in very nearby, but the folks here aren't a problem - we have a great community. It is the "urban" element that creates the unease, and that has nothing to do with a man's skin color - it is 100% cultural in origin.
Now you may resume your normal activities......

Point proven. :RacistFlush:

On that trip to SC, i spent a night on the roadie in Memphis. I liked the place, walked around downtown at night with FreundinSonntag and didn't feel unsafe. After the fact my buddy who lives there that i met up with for a beer alluded to some of the problems in that city and i had others express similar concerns when i told them of my time there. I don't claim to understand the dynamics of the place but i can't claim to not have observed what they were referring to.

This scared the crap out of my sister because her son works (ed) there. She has been a elementary school teacher for many years in Memphis and made fun of me for a long time about my carry permit. And frankly I only carry when I go into Memphis, out here I don't see the need. Anyway, today she called me and asked me to help her pick out a gun and get her permit. Once upon a time she was a young idealistic teacher wanting to improve the world. Now she is jaded and just wants to make it to retirement. Memphis is a sad sad city - it reminds me a lot of Detroit.
I really liked living in Seattle long ago. Sure there were thugs there too, but it wasn't so racially divided.

I am sure you didn't feel unsafe downtown. That is the most heavily patrolled part of the city because of the tourists. Don't go to Beale street late on Saturday nights though. That is "Thug" night and people are always getting shot or stabbed.
Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of really nice areas of Memphis, but you really don't want to go wandering off if you don't know the city.

We were at Beale on a Saturday, it was Memphis in May and there were alot of cops out, and we didn't stay much past midnight before moving to some of the DT bars, so that may have factored in.

About five years ago I thought I was going to have to shoot a guy, in a nice part of town, and it scared the crap out of me. Long story short it was a dude with a history of mental problems and drug abuse, and technically I could have shot him without legal worries. He was very close and had a deadly weapon (a pipe) in his hands and acting aggressively. I didn't pull the gun but I had my hand on it and was trying desperately to dial 911 on my Blackberry (Yes, I had one of those then) while keeping an eye on him. I probably dialed every other number combination possible than 911. Adrenalin does funny things to you. Anyway, the dude finally took off and I was able to actually make the call. I remember that two thoughts were going through my head, "IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING?!?!??!" and "I DO NOT WANT TO SHOOT THIS MAN". The best word to describe the situation is 'surreal'.
After the the thing was over and he was caught, cops asked me why I didn't shoot him. I told them that "I didn't see it in his eyes." All but one congratulated me on my restraint, but one was disgusted that I didn't shoot the guy. That cop was black, and so was the dude. Go figure.
-
Yep. Go figure.

That is part of the "long story short." I wasn't cornered; I could have easily left the scene without a confrontation. Others couldn't have though and I have a large protective streak.

You wouldn't happen to be a neighborhood watchmen by any chance?
lol No.
I was drinking coffee and reading a book in front of a coffee shop on the first nice spring day of the year. It was a Sunday and 1 o'clock in the afternoon. A drug addled crazy dude was the last thing in the world I was expecting. But I WAS in Memphis so I was carrying. I lived nearby at the time.
Sorry to fly into the face of your expectations. Where I live now, 11% of the adult population have carry permits and we have an aggressive police force. Unsurprisingly we have minimal crime out here. lol
-

Before you inquire further, the coffee shop "Highpoint Coffee", now out of business, was approximately equidistant between Rhodes College and the U of Memphis, and was full of young students industrially working on laptops at the time. The funny thing is that none of them were aware of the "drama" occurring outside until the cops showed up. That definitely added to the surreal quality of it.....

"Drinking coffee". Guys, this is part of a cultural miscommunication. In the racially charged gun-nut south, this means "morning drinking".
Find a meeting, friend.

Farragut has a building named after him on the Naval Submarine Base in New London, CT.

you know what would suck? being from the south and playing a confederate soldier in a reenactment. that would suck real bad

This is basically exactly what Auburn is as a school in their rivalry with Alabama, yet kids enroll and fans tune in. Puzzling, right?

DNR any of this thread but if we are going to be honest here, Lee was the biggest badass I have ever read about, and if the North had a general 1/8th as badass as Lee, the war would have been over about 3 years before it was

Don't know if you were aware but Lincoln offered the job to Lee, but he turned it down and resigned to go home to Virginia. Had he taken it, history would be very very different indeed. Hell, if there was any other president in office than Lincoln, we would have 2 different countries now. Dude was a freaking political genius.

Seriously, do some reading on Lincoln during the war. Very very few people could have pulled that off. If you think Vietnam was an unpopular war, wait til you learn about what Lincoln had to go through.

That's not what he meant. He meant we wish that the South had won. apart from the horrible mass killing of black people that the southerns would have continued, our lives in the North would be way better without having to support the south.
Washington would be more like Toronto (clean and well run) and Atlanta would be exactly like Johannesburg (mansions and shanty towns and nothing in between).

Washington would be more like Toronto (clean and well run) and Atlanta would be exactly like Johannesburg (mansions and shanty towns and nothing in between).
I know what he meant, but thanks for outlining your vision of Utopia. Very enlightening.
I am not the one whose forefathers couldn't help themselves from killing every single black person they could get their hands on.
You need to start with the man in the mirror, bro.
-
If the South had won, the North would have had it's first black President by 1920, at the latest.
-
DNR any of this thread but if we are going to be honest here, Lee was the biggest badass I have ever read about, and if the North had a general 1/8th as badass as Lee, the war would have been over about 3 years before it was
Don't know if you were aware but Lincoln offered the job to Lee, but he turned it down and resigned to go home to Virginia. Had he taken it, history would be very very different indeed. Hell, if there was any other president in office than Lincoln, we would have 2 different countries now. Dude was a freaking political genius.
So we have Lincoln to blame.
lol

Obviously you don't know your history.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_draft_riots
"...Initially intended to express anger at the draft, the protests turned into a race riot, with white rioters, mainly but not exclusively Irish immigrants,[3] attacking blacks wherever they could find them. Estimates indicate at least 119 blacks were killed. "NY Draft Riots". The conditions in the city were such that Major General John E. Wool, commander of the Department of the East, said on July 16 that "Martial law ought to be proclaimed, but I have not a sufficient force to enforce it."[6] The military did not reach the city until after the first day of rioting, when mobs had already ransacked or destroyed numerous public buildings, two Protestant churches, the homes of various abolitionists or sympathizers, many black homes, and the Colored Orphan Asylum at 44th Street and Fifth Avenue, which was burned to the ground.[7]
The demographics of the city changed as a result of the riot. So many blacks left Manhattan permanently (many moving to Brooklyn), that by 1865 their population fell below 10,000, the number in 1820..."

Pete is right about the continuing deleterious effects of the South on our country as a whole, but I'll take that over a Confederate States with free reign to ramp up slavery to unfathomable levels of barbarity. We probably would've had to invade them eventually anyway for humanitarian reasons. The world would have demanded action to stop the slow-motion holocaust occurring in the Confederate States.
-
i think the fact that it is really really really easy to make fun the South for any number of reasons, while on the other hand it is very hard to come up with something to make fun of the North for (snow! ) speaks volumes about both :th_twocents:

You know why this thread works? It's the telling lack of Auburn fans in this thread condemning slavery, the Confederacy, and their treasonous slaveholding Rebel ancestors. I haven't seen one Auburn fan say, "Yep, you Northerners gave us a stomping, and it's a good thing you did. Our degenerate culture and barbaric ideology was tearing the country apart and making a mockery of everything it was supposed to stand for -- not to mention destroying the lives of generations of black people. Thanks to intelligent, brave Northerners with good morals and hygiene, millions of human beings were freed from bondage and America was given a chance to succeed. Cheers!"
But not a peep in that vein. Sad, really.

Any decent human being should be able to say that, but they just can't. Even most Germans now apologize for the Nazis, but the SEC just can't bring itself to denounce slavery and racism. Sad.

There are actually a ton of similarities between the Nazi's and the SEC. Cept at least the former Nazi's produce world class engineering, and all they do In the SEC is assemble Toyotas at a discount of union wages.

Agree completely, Pete. But Auburn might be the worst. They're like the SS of the SEC.

That was back when "Piss-Pounding Auburn" really meant something. I'm looking forward to the reenactment on the field on Sept. 18, but it couldn't be as amazing as the original. Will be just as easy, tho.
-

Hardly. 19th century US giving aid to anyone is laughable. If anything the South would have been flooded with British and French investment. They would have leapt at the opportunity to try to bring the CSA into their respective spheres of influence.

This is called revisionist history. The south was broke, had no industry and would have had to give up slavery regardless of who won the war. That's a worthless economy.

They would have been pressured to give up slavery, but without Northerners around to cast light on their moral depravity they wouldn't even have gotten as far a "Separate but Equal,"....would have been more like "Separate but Razor Wire and Corrugated Aluminum Houses."

This might be arguably OK, since the institutions of slavery and Jim Crow have been abolished now. But I worry the South would backslide a lot. I think the South would become very (even more) backwards and systemically racist without the influence and control of the enlightened North. The victims being, of course, minorities, the poor, women, etc. The big winners would be the SEC, since they wouldn't have to play superior teams from the Big 12 anymore. (Sorry, the North would keep Oklahoma and the parts of Texas with Austin and maybe Waco and College Station. What are you gonna do about it, loser SECers?)

Unlikely. But on the other hand it is equally unlikely that those young men would have been welcomed with open arms, and very likely would have been returned south if the authorities got them. The Underground Railroad would have continued operation of course.

What if....? Part 1
To explore the effects of the “Civil War” ending with two countries we would need to pick a time that this would occur. In this case I will choose what I feel is the most likely way this could have happened and that is with Lincoln losing his reelection bid in 1864 to McClellan. Until Sherman took Atlanta this was a very real possibility, and in fact Lincoln had resigned himself to losing that election. The fall of Atlanta changed everything for the electorate; finally they had a substantial result they could cling to in the face of the massive personnel losses and huge amounts of treasure spent. Lets say that N.B. Forrest was allowed to move east and interdict the Army of the Tennessee's supply lines thus slowing its advance on Atlanta. The result of this would undoubtedly have been a President McClellan, whose sole platform was to end the war immediately.
Negotiating a peace at that point would have been tricky. The Midwestern states would have demanded that the US maintain its control of the Mississippi for access to the Gulf of Mexico – a key trade route. The CSA would never have agreed to a peace that separated the new country into two parts. A compromise of some type would have surely been worked out with free navigation guaranteed in some way while that territory, or most of it, would return to the hands of the CSA. Undoubtedly neither side would have been satisfied with the result and in the long term would be a reoccurring bone of contention if not actually a casus belli at some point.

What if.....? Part 2 The North
The social implications to a separate peace would have been in a word chaotic. Whereas the Abolitionist movement was a real political power in certain areas, it was in no way universal. In fact, many of the abolitionists were not enamored with the idea of living shoulder to shoulder with blacks. Lincoln himself was actually interested in the idea of returning freed slaves to Africa. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Liberia Working class whites, especially immigrants, in the north were certainly opposed to large numbers of freedmen showing up and competing for work. In the aftermath of a “lost” war this feeling would have intensified. The ensuing social unrest in urban areas, and its fallout, would have long lasting negative effects. It is highly unlikely that the northern black population would have taken to this kindly, especially considering many thousands of them had taken up arms to free their families still in bondage. The resentment on both sides would have been considerable and surely would have resulted in multiple acts of brutality. The US government would have had to step into this chaos, and it is very unlikely that they would have favored the black population over the white in their interventions. Victorian age thinking did not see the blacks as any way equal to whites, and more than likely the Back To Africa movement would have picked up traction and become official policy.
Another question arises about the disposition of the thousands of runaway slaves the US Army had under its control in occupied territories throughout the south. While some US commanders were confirmed Abolitionists most were basically ambivalent about the black man. During the war runaways were welcomed by the US Army because it deprived the enemy of labor and at the same time gave the Army a thankful and motivated workforce which was happily exploited throughout the conflict. What would have happened to these former slaves as the Army pulled out? Chances are very good that they would have been left to their own devices with tragic results as Confederate troops reestablished control.
I believe that the northern black population as a whole would have felt great pressure to either go to Africa or perhaps migrate west. The cost in lives would have been high either way they went because the black population at the time would not have generally had the resources they would have needed to ensure success.

So because some Northern studs were anti-slavery but still a little racist it makes the South's stance that it was ok to own another human validated? I dunno AU_Tigers I still think the non-slavers win this round.

What if.....? Part 3 The South
I have heard many fellow southerners over the years say something to the effect that “if the south had won, slavery would have eventually died out on its own.” I absolutely disagree with that – it would have actually become worse for the black man than it was before. Slave life on large plantations has been well documented in its brutality. The majority of slaves in the south, however, lived a somewhat better existence than those on the large plantations but they were still slaves and obviously totally subject to their owners' whims. In a post war south, these conditions would undoubtedly worsened for a variety of reasons.
The southern infrastructure was nearly in ruins, displaced people both white and black littered the country, courthouses and records were gone, and malnutrition and disease were rampant. It is unlikely that the CSA government would have made a serious effort to return slaves to their owners, at least not initially. It is more likely that the government would have formed labor brigades out of the slaves that were not currently in their owners' control, and would have used them of WPA style projects to repair the country. One must not forget that due to the state of the infrastructure that it was impossible to transport supplies and food in any significant amount so the life expectancy in these labor brigades would have been very short.
The Confederacy would have had staked itself nearly to ruin on the institution of slavery and would have viewed their “victory” as a validation of the practice and so would have energetically worked to reassert control over the black population. I imagine the black population would have a variety of reactions to this; despair, anger, and a sense of betrayal so the reassertion of control would certainly have been bloody.
Over the ensuing years the south would feel mounting international pressure to eliminate slavery but would resist it strongly. Their national pride, as well as the entrenched social hierarchy, would demand it. I suppose it is possible that the invention of the internal combustion engine many years later would have reduced the south's “need” to rely on forced labor, but the institution would have lived on for a long time, if for no other reason than for the nature the nation's birth.
One final part is coming.

In many southern circles, the sec stands for slavery enthusiasts conference :buh-bye:

What if.....? Part 4
Our history, post “Civil War”, has often been ugly, but it would have been much much worse had the south won their independence. It is almost certain that the resulting nations in North America would have had multiple wars over the years, and also almost certainly the two resulting nations would have broken up further in ensuing years. The precedent would have been set after all.
European countries would have befriended the infant CSA as a counter to the growing commercial and military might of the US, and the weakened CSA would have had no choice but to accept, thereby probably spawning altogether different “World Wars.”
The black man would have suffered the most by far as he was ground by geopolitical forces and heightened racial prejudices.
Without a doubt the entire world is better for the south having lost.

I enjoyed that intellectual exercise (masturbation?). Thanks for giving me the idea guys.

You could've just said "The entire world is better for the south having lost" without all that other stuff and we'd all have been fine with it.
-
Rallied the article by admitting the south is trash and should be happy we dominated them.

Yeah, but I enjoyed doing that. It was actually kinda fun.

Blah blah, all I heard was "Slavery was awesome, the South shall rise again, Jeff Gordon sucks," blah blah.
Just kidding, I liked it and am glad you admit the South was heinous. Still disappointed you didn't admit to Northerners' superior hygiene.

Great thread guys. I think we all learned quite a bit. My two "takeaways" are 1) My fantasies about the South being a separate country away from the United States may actually not be as great as I thought, and 2) Pretty sure it would still be fair to good for the South be a separate country away from the United States.
Everyone take the night off.

what's so civil about war anyway, right pete?
