How will K-State moves on without them? Southwell was capable of playing at high levels and Spradling was K-State’s only player who fully understood Weber’s motion offense. But they will be easier to replace than Rodney McGruder, Jordan Henriquez and Martavious Irving were a year ago.
“They aren’t boisterous guys,” Weber said of his senior class before the NCAA Tournament. “We come every day hoping for some epiphany and they have the little fairy godmother who comes and does a little wand on them and the next day they come and they are great leaders. They are what they are.”

Also, no, Kellis, going 1 and done in the tournament should not ever, on any grounds, be considered a success.
-
that's a pretty cold quote, especially before the tourney wow...
still, probably accurate.
also not a great sign only one dude allegedly understood the offense...it looked pretty good, considering...
-
Frank and oscar appear to both have been very frustrated with Shane Southwell and Will Spradling.
-
i won't believe that quote is real until I hear it out of @coachtrimweber's own mouth

I'll try, but I might riff a little more than just what's on the script.
-

I don't believe that for a second. That part of the article was not a quote from oscar, so that might have been Kellis trying to drive a point home. If the team didn't understand the offense, oscar certainly would have mentioned it by now.
I'm all for coaches being honest but that quote was wrong, that goes beyond holding players accountable. People who hated the last coach for his demeanor but are okay with this need to ask themselves some questions. That's a real dickish quote.

One man's wish for Spradling and his family to be burned alive is another man's wish for Spradling to be approached my a fairy godmother who'd do a little want on him.
-
I have no problem going to jail for beating the face off of #excusebruce
-
That's not what you are going to go to jail for
-
I usually side on let coaches say whatever, but this seems a bit overboard on the sarcastic assholishness. I'd rather have a coach in my face screaming over that. Maybe it's just because of my perception of the person who is stating that quote, I don't know
-
all great coaches just hang back and "hope" that their players have epiphanies on how to be leaders. good job oscar.
-
oscar being oscar. oscar is what oscar is, and there isn't anything we can do about it.
-

Let him go to Marquette tho, ONLY IF HE WANTS TO THO!

I don't. Even if I did, I suspect they'd gravitate more toward coaches like Brad Stevens, Shaka Smart, Brad Underwood, etc.
Please, if you exist fairy godmothers, wave those wands and bring Brad Underwood back.
-
Blaming Frank's players is such a pro move. And Kellis crushing the jayhawk love of oscar coaching at KSU forever. That is a great article, with it all.
-
It was a dumb quote.

what in the hell kellis

Frank and oscar appear to both have been very frustrated with Shane Southwell and Will Spradling.
A trusted source (A- or something) told me that Shane & Will were the most selfish players the program has had since he can't remember when. Said they limited this team more than any shortcoming the squad might've had. :frown:

Yeah. I mean, I'm pretty sure that Shultz kid knows the offense pretty well, too.

yeah Kellis has no rough ridin' clue what he is talking about. Getting jabs in since ku didn't make it past the first weekend (again)

Yeah this was the worst part. I don't even care about the quote.

Weber said the same thing to "people" at Illinois about McCamey and Davis their senior year. Seems like a talking point he likes to recycle.
As to the quote in the OP, reminds me of what oscar said once in a post game presser about taking Chester to Oz to see if they could find him a brain.

:surprised:
"He has heart, but he has to have a brain too," Weber said. "So we'll go to the Wizard of Oz and see what we can find to help him."

And he and Chet eventually went to Oz (the Wamego area). Makes the Milwaukee fairy godmother thing even scarier.

The lack of vocal leadership is absolutely meaningless if Shane and Southwell don't combine to shoot 7/29 from 3 the last 3 games of their careers
-
oscar bashing his players is kind of funny. The oz quote is fan rough ridin' tastic
-
it feels like oscar knows if he trashes frank's players then it will make him look like he's "cleaning up the place" and most of the fanbase will eat it up.

The only people he has to get over on are the majority of the K-State fanbase. That doesn't take much.
-
the polite way to do this is to say about seniors who are quiet etc "They lead by example."
The strange thing is that the quote is from before the tourney, so it's not as if he is trashing them out the door after their performance against UK.

Keep this fairy away...I want to win a god damn tournament game :shakesfist:

I really want to zing Kellis via twitter about his Will Spradling knowing the offense line but I suck at twitter. I wrote him something but he probably doesn't even know what I'm talking about.

you're talking about a guy that has gone on record multiple times saying that scheduling is more important than recruiting and maybe the most important thing a coach does. i don't think we can put anything past this yutz.

what in the sweet eff?
Also, no, Kellis, going 1 and done in the tournament should not ever, on any grounds, be considered a success.
Success in the tournament or a successful season cannot contain a 1-and-done in the tournament? If it is the latter then you place too much importance on the tournament and too little on the season.

It's not like a 9 seed is indicative of a successful season, either.

I don't think the point of fielding a team is to finish fifth in the conference. The point of fielding a team is to try to win the national championship, regular season conference championship, and conference tournament championship (in order of importance).

To me it's successful enough for what I considered a rebuilding year at most heading in. Next season my expectations rise.
All that aside, the oscar quote is stupid and could actually be pretty hurtful. I don't think Weber means it that way. He just seems to say a lot of things that come off uncouth, especially in print. That isn't an excuse for oscar either. He's been in the business and in the public eye long enough that he should have learned to curtail that by now.

Here's what Kellis based it on:
This time, a 20-victory season that featured victories over Kansas, Iowa State, Gonzaga and Oklahoma, as well as a winning conference record, demands approval.
oscar Weber entered the season with a young roster and NIT expectations. Guiding the Wildcats to a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament should be seen as an achievement, even though they appeared capable of more at times.
- 20 wins. I didn't find anything real quick that tells me how many teams hit that. Seems like a lot. http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/bracketology/sos?&_3:col_1=3
- Not getting swept by ku, isu or ou
- Beating gonzaga in wichita
- .556 in conference, .526 including big 12 tournament
- Having a young roster and NIT expectations(self-inflicted)
- 9-seed in the NCAA tournament

I don't disagree, and my response wasn't just with regard to this season. Furthermore (and I'm not trying to put words into your mouth) if the point of fielding a team is to try and win Natty, Conference, and Conference Tournament titles, and that defines success then most programs, even many considered good are failing miserably and should have loads upon loads of pissed off fans every season.
I think the point of fielding a team — disregarding revenue (important) and scholastic (importance debated) purposes — is to develop a program that puts itself in a position to compete for the championships you mentioned in a reasonably frequent basis. Hell, if championships or bust is measure or success then LHC Bill Snyder is little more than mediocre and a debatable failure.

Obviously, winning a national championship every season is not a reasonable expectation, but it should still be the goal. On the other hand, there are programs that have shown that it is possible to win a conference title every season. These should be the goals of every program, every year, regardless of the circumstance. I'm not saying you should fire the staff every year for failing to achieve these. I'm not saying that you shouldn't reflect on the minor successes over the course of the season and celebrate them, but at the end of the day, if you didn't bring home hardware, you failed.
There were fun moments this season. I enjoy looking back on a lot of them, but there are some terrible, terrible moments from this season, as well. Instead of patting ourselves on the back for the things we did right, we need to be focusing on the things that were done wrong and strive to fix them. I hate complacency. I don't see oscar talking about fixing these mistakes. All I see is excuses, finger pointing and celebrating mediocrity.

I still like my never miss the tournament in back to back years and have a winning record in the tournament as benchmark for power schools that care about hoops. At this point, I would only put KU and ISU as schools that truly care about it in the Big 12.
-
I'm absurdly consistent.
I tend to agree with Dax, though I think that the program he describes doesn’t exist long term. And it doesn’t exist because if you do what he says over the course of 10-15 years, then towards the end of that time, you are no long expecting just that, you are now expecting more because it probably means you’re an elite-ish program. And if you go along with what everyone else “expects” over the course of 10 years, then you end up just hoping for the tourney once every 3 years because you inevitably begin to slip.
It’s like, you’re either elite or you’re not. If aren’t, then you argue over these insignificant/irrelevant “milestones” or whatever, if you are, then you argue over championships.
-

I hear you, and I get what you're saying about the bolded part, especially outside of this particular story. We know a lot of that is just PR fluff from Schulz, Currie, etc. They're going to pump the PR sunshine no matter what. As far as Kellis' column it was just that, one dudes opinion that K-State overachieved or succeeded this season. Is that what he really thinks? :dunno:, but those quotes from oscar weren't really excuses to me. They weren't placed in the story to be excuses either. I took it as they were to show the point that the Cats were returning a lot, including leadership (Gip was the biggest leader on this team, imo) to a talented crew next season.
Again, oscar's quote about fairies and whatever is typical Brucing, and he should fix it. It sounds/ reads ridiculous, even if it was (probably) just an honest answer to a question about finding leadership heading into the NCAA tournament.
I looked back at some old Champaign Gazette article over oscar's 2006-07 (23-12, 9-7) and 2007-08 (16-19, 5-13) squads to gauge his reaction. I ran out of free articles but the summary I got was that after 06-07 there were some of the "tough bounces" comments that easily come off as excuses. The quotes after the 08 season took a lot more responsibility.
"The most disappointing thing, I've always taken pride in being part of programs where the kids make improvement," Weber said Monday. "It's probably one thing we didn't do on a whole, and it's probably why we had our struggles this year."
Then he went on to talk about players (Frazier, etc.) needing to step up as leaders the following year. They did get better the following year. Tying for second in the Big 10 and earning a 5-seed in the NCAA tournament before falling to 12-Seed W. Kentucky in the first round.
I'm not making excuses and don't want to be confused with accepting mediocrity, but I do think K-State fell on the positive side to what was a rebuilding/ transition year. That's just realistic to me. They fall on the NIT side? Then my alarm bells are going of, and it doesn't need to be said a follow up like Illinois' 07-08 squad and Weber's seat is burning up, if not burnt down. That shouldn't be in K-State's cycle, and I hope we don't condone it. The following years of bouncing in and out of the NCAAs every other year isn't good enough for K-State.
I'd be interested in Bread giving an honest account of oscar taking responsibility or blaming throughout his tenure at Illinois. I'm not concerned with the comments other than the awkwardness yet.

the bottom line is that oscar ended up at a place where people in charge, oscar himself and a majority of our fans are going to be just fine w/ the season they had this year. 9 seed, quick exit, then find something undefinable to blame and how next year it will be better. rinse, repeat. i'm already bored w/ it.

well, after living through the 90s and 00s, 1-year Huggs, and Dillons trashcan, any year where we beat ku and make it to the tournament doesn't seem so bad

yeah. I'm fine to a point where I wouldn't fire oscar as long as he sustains seasons like this. But yeah, it doesn't feel as fun.

Like this season or his first two combined? I'm guessing the latter.

a coach without leadership can't demand it of his players, which is why he isnt comfortable doing so.
i think this is part of the cause of our horrible road performances, at home the players are accountable to the fans (leaders), but away they are accountable to nobody (especially not oscar)
plausible?

I couldn't do it year after year.

I couldn't do it year after year.
well, you have to consider what happens if you let them go. I look at a place like NC State running off Herb Sendek after 5 straight boring NCAA tournament seasons, hiring Sidney Lowe and promptly missing the tournament 5 years in a row. It's really hard to start over with a new coach, especially when the guy you're firing wasn't an ace recruiter. (Oddly enough, Sendek's replacement at NCState actually recruited really well and helped Gottfried out a ton.)
If there's examples of uninspiring coaches who have been fired despite going to the NCAA tournament every year and then getting surpassed by their replacements, I'd love to hear them.
-
I think the only reason anyone is content with this year is because everyone expects better things from the next 3 seasons. I think if we were losing a lot of our players between now and next season, even the tucks would be upset.
-
the excuse is always going to be next year, it's just dumb

people aren't appreciating how hard it is to get in the tournament. this season bored the crap out of me, but it was an impressive accomplishment.

Not that hard for a major confo team. Just need to finish ~ .500 in confo...
-
It's hard to do every year.
-
not always. this year was sort of anomalous. and finishing .500 in a major conference isn't easy.
-
It's hard to do every year.
You really just have to put forth an effort is all. If a major confo school really wants to make the tournament they will.

It's hard to do every year.
You really just have to put forth an effort is all. If a major confo school really wants to make the tournament they will.
WVU REALLY wanted to make the tournament this year, and they didn't. :dunno:

people aren't appreciating how hard it is to get in the tournament. this season bored the crap out of me, but it was an impressive accomplishment.

You're supposed to tuck your undershirt into your underwear? Who the eff decided this?

You'd never have to walk the plank with that bulge. She'd be the one walking the plank, amirite fanning?!? :)

I think the only reason anyone is content with this year is because everyone expects better things from the next 3 seasons. I think if we were losing a lot of our players between now and next season, even the tucks would be upset.
Of course, this doesn't seem that hard to comprehend. Also, nicname has made some very reasonable points in this thread IMHO.
There are really only 2 reasons people are concerned right now. a) A strong dislike of oscar Weber. b) K-State lost in the first round last year with a high seed. Its probably at least 80% the former.
There are plenty of disappointing aspects from this season. Losing our last 4 games, especially Baylor at home. Not winning on the road, especially games like UT, ISU, and WVU. Not winning a game in the tournament. Terrible losses to No Colorado and Charlotte to begin the year. Lack of development and leadership by Shane and Will as seniors.
However, there is still plenty to build on, namely a roster that has more talent than I expected based on recruiting, including one of the Top 5 returning players in the Big 12. If Foster hadn't become what he is, I'd certainly be much less excited about not only next year, but the immediate future. Plus I see plenty of potential in most of oscar's other recruits, especially Westicles, but also Thomas, and both Johnsons. I'm excited about the prospect of what Edwards can do, and to a lesser extent Bolden and Hurt. Frankly, the program is in much better shape than I imagined it would be when oscar was hired because I did not necessarily expect a Big 12 title and 2 NCAA appearances his first 2 seasons.
The next 3 years are big for oscar and for K-State basketball and I have high expectations. Over the next 3 seasons I expect K-State to contend (finish within 2 games) of at least one Big 12 title. I expect 3 more NCAA tournaments and a .500 record in the tournament over the course of those 3 trips (which means at least one Sweet 16). I expect the Cats to win at least 40% of our road games and at least 90% at home. I expect this staff to recruit at a level that after Foster and most of the current roster leaves another group of players is ready to pick up and build off what they did. If oscar doesn't achieve all of those things I will be disappointed, though it depends on what level he fails that I will call for a coaching change. Regardless, based on what he's done so far, I think he has earned those 3 years to show if he can truly build off the good situation he inherited and a situation that he's at least maintained (if not made better) during his first 2 seasons.

If he loses in the first round the next two years, or misses the tourney one of those years, then I wouldn't think it'd be unreasonable to want a change. I don't think that will happen, but I'd be pretty fed up with oscar if it did.

_FAN is very patient when it comes to evaluating coaches. I like that about him. Also, I hate that about him.
-
I'm sure it has been discussed but the one thing that keeps coming back to mind is how he treats his players. The fact that he gives them opportunities to interact with each other and build team chemistry has such a great chance to turn into leadership potential. I don't have the initial source for the info, but I remember reading that Frank kept the fun to a minimum which killed team chemistry. With oscar's players being in a happier environment over the course of four years I can see that there might be an easier time for players to trust each other in game situations.
Call me kstate0 for believing in the intangibles, but I think this is why oscar is our guy and why the leadership development is coming.

I think I have high (but fair) expectations for the next 3 years. IMO oscar has passed (I'd grade him at a B or B-) his first 2 years of transition from Frank's program to his. There are still a few lingering parts, but its pretty much his program now.

What would you grade his first few years at Illinois? Or is that an unfair comparison?

I can't think of a Frank team that lacked leadership. I don't know if that is a credit to Frank or the fearless guards he brought in (Pullen/Angel/Denis) but I certainly wouldn't say he hurt leadership potential.
-
If you had told me after we hired him that oscar would share the conference title once and lose in the first round of the NCAA twice in his first two season I would have happily accepted that. I'd give him a B+ so far.

You are 100% right. I had my mind stuck on this years seniors and wondering if their lack of leadership development could be tied to their handling by Frank. Is it your opinion if Angel hadn't left he would have been a leader on this years team?

Yeah, all the evidence says that Frank's players (that weren't Franked) loved Frank. And they played really, really hard for him.

in other words, what year is going to be the fire or extend year?

I can realistically see no way Weber is ever fired if Currie is still the AD. It would take something unprecedented in oscar's career like a major off court incident or a winless conference season.

What do you mean? Poorly, right? Did you read the first post in this thread?
Your point about Frank is completely made up and dumb. Did you follow K-State basketball under Frank Martin? The "shake and bake" video, that same year when ABC/ESPN followed the team and Bill Walker clowned LeBron James, Tournament Confidential, the tunnel dance; those teams seemed like the most fun teams ever. What the hell are you talking about?

Maybe tunnel dancing was like a form of discipline: "You miss another rebound and you're running 20 stairs and dancing down 5 tunnels!!!"

if there's one thing old yard dohgie knows it's spotting and accurately critiquing leaders of men.

LOL at this thread. How many times during the course of this past season did oscar hold Will and Shane up as examples of what this team was missing? He makes so many excuses he confuses them.
-
Over the next 3 seasons I expect K-State to contend (finish within 2 games) of at least one Big 12 title. Regardless, based on what he's done so far, I think he has earned those 3 years to show if he can truly build off the good situation he inherited and a situation that he's at least maintained (if not made better) during his first 2 seasons.
three seasons is a long time.

at what level would you say weber failed the first third of his test?
-
at what level would you say weber failed the first third of his test?
Weber's job has been to distance himself from what happened at Illinois. In that respect he has failed miserably.
It looks exactly like Illinois except that Frank Martin's program was not as good as Bill Self's was at Illinois.
oscar Weber was riding that National Championship game for years but it loses its luster with 18 year old that only remember the last 6 years or so of hoops.
From a national perspective, oscar has done very little with the Cats except for beating KU a couple of times and losing in the first round of the tournament.
