YMCA clubhouses charged Gold Roll employees $10 a year for access to bowling lanes, billiards tables, chess boards, and a host of organized social events. LOL, I AM rough ridin' KIDDING! No, they will totally speak our language. I also read where prostitution is legal in Nicaragua. NO FAT CHICKS, THOUGH (our rule, not theirs).
-
Who wants in on Limestone and my Canal baseball team? I'm not real good at baseball, but sounds like a good way to just have some brews and enjoy a lazy Nicaraguan Sunday with my Canal Frat buds.
-
I'm planning rush parties right now. Paintball for the first one!
-
Im out. I hope you have a great time for 2 weeks before you catch malaria and die.
-
Everyone in our Frat will have a pet monkey. It will be our "thing," kinda like ATO's all used to have crotch rockets, and Sigma Chi's had Ping hats.
Apparently they are ALL over Nicaragua, so it probably will not be a big deal to capture and train them. Obviously pledges will do this.
Also, the chicks apparently LOVE the crap out monkeys. We will be THE most elite house in the Canal game. I am picturing an annual party that is kinda like a cross between Fiji Islander and SAE's Patty Murphy. We have loads of monkeys and a huge pool with tiki torches, and one monkey is Patty and cannot refuse a drink all week....he will be SO mumped UP!

I was thinking of opening a Burger King right down the road from the Canal Frats, and have it stay open pretty late into the night.

I'm not going to over think this and miss out again. Pete, tell me how much it costs to get in on this and where to send the check

Anybody else picture a super rich Pete down in Nicaragua with a monocle and one of those super long cigarette holder thingies?

We are in the fact finding stage. Obviously you all will have a chance to get in on the ground floor.

We will put our monkey's names on the DD list when we have parties and IFC will be all :dubious:

We will train our monkeys to watch out for the IFC, and then alert us by ringing a bell or something. We will never get busted, not even for room-to-rooms.

I want a huge mansion with like 100 butlers and a huge wall around my compound. Inside, I want a pool with a waterfall, with purple (go cats) tiles, and a high dive. I want lots of arches and covered walkways and guards on the top of my house with rifles to protect me.

I figure I can afford it right? We'll be rich pretty quickly I assume. I'm thinking I'll have some coconut trees and banana trees in my compound and you guys are free to all the coconuts and bananas you can eat.

The best part of starting this canal frat is that there are no loser alumni who will breathe down our necks and get after us when the house gets dirty.
Side question: are we gonna be pledges our first year? Will we get hazed, and if so, by whom?
-
Cartier, yes, obviously that's exactly what our Canal Frat will look like.
Dlew, we will not be pledges, we are founding fathers, and as such we can never be hazed. However, we WILL haze the ever living crap out of all new members, because that is the ONLY way to build brotherhood and respect for the house (hardly needs stating, but there it is).
A few house rules I have been thinking over:
1. No infected monkeys, only clean ones. If your monkey gets infected or dead, the pledge on monkey duty will get you a new one. I don't want to hear a bunch of complaining about this.
2. Quiet hours during Downton Abbey and Bachelor.
3. No driving off the property if you are drunk. Get a rickshaw. We don't want to lose our rough ridin' charter.
-
No swearing on the first floor

we should get a house mom.

I know Pete said to hold off, but this is too good of an idea. I am just going to send him all my money and hope its enough.

Just using the naked eye, those red lines look to be considerably longer than the blue line. So………. I guess what i'm saying is, this seems to be an ill conceived idea.

Don't worry about nicname guys, I sold my house and bought a boat this weekend. I know it maybe moving a little fast, but I am thinking that I will start to head down that way now and just meet you all there.

i bet they have a lot of maps that need posting

i've been noodling on a recipe for imitation doritos, i think this is the perfect opportunity to open a stand and start selling them. right next to the canal.
yup, that's not a dorito you're eating but it's cheaper than one and basically tastes the same. $5 please. #retired

The Chinese are financing this thing, and are the general contractors. USA won't get to use it without paying loads extra. I expect to see Chinese military in Nicaragua (and probably Honduras) at some point. But, I'm not going to let that dampen my enthusiasm for our Canal Frat.

IIRC, Nicaragua was originally planned to be the spot for the Canal. In that sense, the Nicaraguan Canal is even more pro-Uncle Sam than the Johnny Come Lately Panamanian variety.

Yeah, so you see that big lake that all the red lines go through? Its one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world...or it would be until the canal brings in saltwater.
-
lciq, here. What's the point in a second canal? The Chinese are tired paying the US to go thru Panama?

Bigger, faster, stronger.
The huge transport ships cant fit through the canal and have to unload on the west coast, only smaller ships can fit through the current canal. If they can fit through the new canal it will be cheaper to ship goods from Asia to the east coast/gulf of mexico.

kind of a dumb question but is there any concern by meteorologists who are studying this design that one ocean can all leak out through the canal and into the other ocean?
-
Pete if it's okay with you I'm going to keep like 50 pre-made Macua's in my mini-fridge at all times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macu%C3%A1). You guys can stop by my room for one whenever you want. Just be sure to use the secret knock so that I know it's not some IFC chump (ben ji) stopping by just to bust my chops.

my mom said I have to live in the Nicaraguan dorms for my first semester. is there spring rush?
-
kind of a dumb question but is there any concern by meteorologists who are studying this design that one ocean can all leak out through the canal and into the other ocean?
i'm assuming and maybe it's a wrong assumption on my part but i'm assuming that there are gates and stuff in the canal and will be in this new one for example where a boat goes in and then a gate is locked behind them and water is drained and then filled with fresh water and then they pass through the lake and then the opposite happends before they go back. it isn't/won't be just a constant free flow of water.
-
safety gates. it sounds like a water protection barrier. if the gates leak we could have a problem, i guess i'll just assume the safety gate designer is qualified.

Jk, I know we aren't allowed to haze, that would be illegal.

What night is the most appropriate night for Chapter in Nicaragua? And, frankly I won't be heart broken if we just punt on dress diners all together.
I am thinking that we make it seasonal. For example, in football season, we could do Monday, and just get it out of the way fast and then go play QB1.

Does anyone know if they'll be needing software salesmen in Nicaragua?
Definitely. Better brush up on your localization packages, though. rough ridin' document sequencing is a pain in the ass, too.

got some buds in the canal biz, spoke w/ them today about this nicaragua idea. they basically barfed all over it. said the plans are a complete joke. read more-
The canal as planned...would destroy around 400,000 hectares (nearly one million acres) of rainforest and wetlands. The Bosawas Biosphere Reserve is located just north of proposed canal route and houses numerous endangered species such as Baird's tapirs, spider monkeys, jaguars and harpy eagles, while the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve is situated just to the south holds a similar assembly of endangered species.
The canal doesn't even bother to skirt around the Cerro Silva Nature Reserve—home to the oldest oak trees in central America, numerous types of monkeys and populations of bright green quetzals—the authors point out. Plans have the waterway cutting straight through that park's northern section.
The canal and its accompanying ports would also bulldoze over endangered sea turtle nesting beaches on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, as well as impact or destroy coral reefs and mangroves, which—in addition to their importance for biodiversity—help buffer inland Nicaragua from tropical storms. As for land animals, those that cannot fly could no longer migrate north to south, cutting species populations off from one another like a watery Berlin Wall.
In addition to impacts on wildlife, indigenous communities—including the Rama, Garifuna, Mayangna, Miskitu and Ulwa—depend on the areas where the proposed canal will be located. No proof has emerged that their rights have been taken into consideration or allocations have been made to make up for disruptions to their lives, the authors note. "Hundreds of villages will have to be evacuated and the indigenous inhabitants relocated," they write. This disruption might even be enough to trigger civil strife.

What about Guatemala or Costa Rica? Guatemala is closer to America (the real one) so that is a plus, but Costa Rica has a shorter distance of canal necessary. Also "rich" is right there in the country name. Just my :th_twocents:
