Title: Nicaraguan Canal - JOB OPPORTUNITY THREAD
Post by: Pete on February 22, 2014, 10:13:03 AM
So, Nicaragua is looking to get into the the Canal game.  What does that mean to you and me?  In a word, profit.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fthumbs.media.smithsonianmag.com%2F%2Fcms_page_media%2F2014%2F2%2F20%2Fmap.jpg.800x0_q85_crop.jpg&hash=a934ae1f07fc06fc28365101c50b9f42977f32fc)

The construction of a canal in Nicaragua linking the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean has been delayed by a year and will not begin until 2015.  This is good news, because more time to plan.

Meanwhile, the consortium of European countries working to expand the Panama canal are way behind and way over budget.  They won't be done with that until late 2015 at best.  That would be a horrible project to be a part of.  Cost cutting and finger pointing abound, certainly.

No, the real action is on ground breaking of the Nicaraguan canal.  If this thing is even close to as awesome as the Panama Canal building project, we are in for a treat.  I did some research, and this rough ridin' Panama Canal effort was basically a giant rough ridin' party.

Quote
In stark contrast, white workers had a luxurious life in the canal zone. The dismal quality of life in the first years of construction on the Panama Canal had sent American workers away in droves. When the turnover rate of skilled U.S. laborers reached 75% in the summer of 1905, the ICC realized they needed to create incentives for Americans to stay on the isthmus. One of the first projects was building a new cold-storage unit to keep fresh, perishable foods. Then, the ICC set to work improving the living conditions. In 1906, 2,500 structures were either renovated or built new, including two-story family homes that featured screened-in verandas, modern plumbing, and electricity. The ICC Band

A year later, American workers celebrated Independence Day on July 4, 1906 with games, athletic competitions, and dancing. This was the beginning of recreation in the canal zone. Baseball leagues, social clubs, and fraternal organizations sprang up to fill lazy Sundays. By that winter, the canal zone had paved roads, warehouses, dormitories, and dining halls.

Attractive enticements to keep white workers on the isthmus became the norm. New cottage homes, public schools, churches and bakeries opened in towns and camps along the route of the canal. Bachelor "hotels," built to house single workers, turned into social gathering places filled with noise and smoke.

YMCA clubhouses charged Gold Roll employees $10 a year for access to bowling lanes, billiards tables, chess boards, and a host of organized social events. In 1911, workers published a yearbook titled The Makers of the Panama Canal that contained biographies of selected employees and pictures of clubs and brotherhoods on the isthmus. By 1913, there were dances and band concerts every Sunday, and nine women's clubs.

White workers were encouraged to bring their wives and families to the isthmus with increasingly extravagant incentives. Housing for married workers was provided rent-free, and homes increased in luxury according to a worker's place on the pay scale. In 1908, over 1,000 families were living on the isthmus and the ICC was spending $2.5 million a year for entertainment and games for white workers.

Who wants in on Limestone and my Canal baseball team?  I'm not real good at baseball, but sounds like a good way to just have some brews and enjoy a lazy Nicaraguan Sunday with my Canal Frat buds.

Everyone in our Frat will have a pet monkey.  It will be our "thing," kinda like ATO's all used to have crotch rockets, and Sigma Chi's had Ping hats.

Apparently they are ALL over Nicaragua, so it probably will not be a big deal to capture and train them.  Obviously pledges will do this.

Also, the chicks apparently LOVE the crap out monkeys.  We will be THE most elite house in the Canal game.  I am picturing an annual party that is kinda like a cross between Fiji Islander and SAE's Patty Murphy.  We have loads of monkeys and a huge pool with tiki torches, and one monkey is Patty and cannot refuse a drink all week....he will be SO mumped UP!

I figure I can afford it right? We'll be rich pretty quickly I assume. I'm thinking I'll have some coconut trees and banana trees in my compound and you guys are free to all the coconuts and bananas you can eat.

The best part of starting this canal frat is that there are no loser alumni who will breathe down our necks and get after us when the house gets dirty.

Side question: are we gonna be pledges our first year?  Will we get hazed, and if so, by whom?
Title: Re: Nicaraguan Canal - JOB OPPORTUNITY THREAD
Post by: Pete on February 22, 2014, 01:27:13 PM
Cartier, yes, obviously that's exactly what our Canal Frat will look like.

Dlew, we will not be pledges, we are founding fathers, and as such we can never be hazed.  However, we WILL haze the ever living crap out of all new members, because that is the ONLY way to build brotherhood and respect for the house (hardly needs stating, but there it is).

A few house rules I have been thinking over:

1.  No infected monkeys, only clean ones. If your monkey gets infected or dead, the pledge on monkey duty will get you a new one.  I don't want to hear a bunch of complaining about this.

2.  Quiet hours during Downton Abbey and Bachelor.

3.  No driving off the property if you are drunk.  Get a rickshaw.  We don't want to lose our rough ridin' charter.

Housing for married workers was provided rent-free, and homes increased in luxury according to a worker's place on the pay scale. In 1908, over 1,000 families were living on the isthmus and the ICC was spending $2.5 million a year for entertainment and games for white workers.

Yeah, so you see that big lake that all the red lines go through? Its one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world...or it would be until the canal brings in saltwater.

Bigger, faster, stronger.

The huge transport ships cant fit through the canal and have to unload on the west coast, only smaller ships can fit through the current canal. If they can fit through the new canal it will be cheaper to ship goods from Asia to the east coast/gulf of mexico.

Pete if it's okay with you I'm going to keep like 50 pre-made Macua's in my mini-fridge at all times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macu%C3%A1). You guys can stop by my room for one whenever you want.  Just be sure to use the secret knock so that I know it's not some IFC chump (ben ji) stopping by just to bust my chops.

i'm assuming and maybe it's a wrong assumption on my part but i'm assuming that there are gates and stuff in the canal and will be in this new one for example where a boat goes in and then a gate is locked behind them and water is drained and then filled with fresh water and then they pass through the lake and then the opposite happends before they go back. it isn't/won't be just a constant free flow of water.

safety gates.  it sounds like a water protection barrier.  if the gates leak we could have a problem, i guess i'll just assume the safety gate designer is qualified.

its ironic that the number one safety gate program and the guy who invented the nicaraguan canal safety gates which keep the world's 2nd largest ocean from completely draining is from the middle of the good old usa but thousands of miles from the nearest ocean it is protecting.

Jk, I know we aren't allowed to haze, that would be illegal.

but seriously, we are going to ruin these pledges until they love us...PM if necessary

What night is the most appropriate night for Chapter in Nicaragua?  And, frankly I won't be heart broken if we just punt on dress diners all together.

I am thinking that we make it seasonal.  For example, in football season, we could do Monday, and just get it out of the way fast and then go play QB1.

Definitely.  Better brush up on your localization packages, though.  rough ridin' document sequencing is a pain in the ass, too.

got some buds in the canal biz, spoke w/ them today about this nicaragua idea.  they basically barfed all over it.  said the plans are a complete joke.  read more-

Quote
The canal as planned...would destroy around 400,000 hectares (nearly one million acres) of rainforest and wetlands. The Bosawas Biosphere Reserve is located just north of proposed canal route and houses numerous endangered species such as Baird's tapirs, spider monkeys, jaguars and harpy eagles, while the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve is situated just to the south holds a similar assembly of endangered species.

The canal doesn't even bother to skirt around the Cerro Silva Nature Reserve—home to the oldest oak trees in central America, numerous types of monkeys and populations of bright green quetzals—the authors point out. Plans have the waterway cutting straight through that park's northern section.

The canal and its accompanying ports would also bulldoze over endangered sea turtle nesting beaches on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, as well as impact or destroy coral reefs and mangroves, which—in addition to their importance for biodiversity—help buffer inland Nicaragua from tropical storms. As for land animals, those that cannot fly could no longer migrate north to south, cutting species populations off from one another like a watery Berlin Wall.

In addition to impacts on wildlife, indigenous communities—including the Rama, Garifuna, Mayangna, Miskitu and Ulwa—depend on the areas where the proposed canal will be located. No proof has emerged that their rights have been taken into consideration or allocations have been made to make up for disruptions to their lives, the authors note. "Hundreds of villages will have to be evacuated and the indigenous inhabitants relocated," they write. This disruption might even be enough to trigger civil strife.

so i have a big eff you to all the canal supporters out there and a big eff you to this website for hosting this thread.  eff you to pete for starting this thread and eff you to everyone who read this it.  #1Cat

What about Guatemala or Costa Rica? Guatemala is closer to America (the real one) so that is a plus, but Costa Rica has a shorter distance of canal necessary.  Also "rich" is right there in the country name.  Just my :th_twocents:

Benji, we already said that we are going to train the monkeys to watch out for IFC.

With monkeys stolen by pledges?

1. When Dlew dies of monkey aids after getting bit you are gonna have bigger problems than some guy at IFC just doing his job
2. I just overheard clams and daris talking about a party coming up, no monkeys have been trained and no party was registered with IFC.
3. Care to explain this receipt I found in the local Dillablo's trashcan?
