Title: TCU
Post by: Belvis Noland on January 07, 2014, 09:03:46 AM
So, we play TCU tonight.  What's the tale of the tape _fan?

By the numbers, it would appear TCU isn't very good at anything.  Looks like we're a much better defending and rebounding team.  Anderson, Fields, Parrish all look decent.

 even though I TSC, that was pretty damn funny!

Anderson is very good, probably an all Big 12 player. Parrish is a solid freshman swing man, efficient scorer. Both can shoot 3s. Fields is a solid big man and will be a challenge for Gip and DJamer inside but  he has battled injuries this year. Shepherd is their next best big and a good rebounder. Their 4th threat is Ray, another rangy swing player, but not a shooter.

This Johnson team has sped up the pace considerably from last year, from 61.5 to 67.5 possessions. A below average offensive team (1.01 PPP) and shooting team (48.8% eFG), their best offense is getting the the FT line (48.6% FTR) and hitting them (73.5% FT%). Nearly 27% of their points come from the FT line which is Top 25 nationally. They are also a typical SLTH type that rarely tries to oboard (only 26.9% OR%). They shoot decent from 3 (34.6%), but only 28.6% of their FGAs are 3s which is below average.

Defensively they are okay (1.01 PPP) and force opponents to only shoot 46.2% eFG and 44.6% on 2PTs, however, they aren't a shot blocking team like OSU. They don't foul much (only 33.9% FTR against them) but otherwise are pretty average in the other defensive numbers.

This year their best wins are Washington State and Tulsa (twice) and they won 2 Big 12 games last year (KU and OU). TCU is improved from last year, but this is still probably the worst team in the league (they'll fight it out with Tech) and unless we show up and sleep walk the Cats should win. If the Cats can defend Anderson, Fields, Parrish and Ray they should be able to score efficient enough to win. After the way the team has played the past month, even with this as the first road game, this would be a bad loss and one this team can't afford if they really want to content for the NCAAs. I think the Cat defense turns this into a grinder and K-State finds a way to win on the road.

Cats 66 - TCU 59

oscar mentioned in his postgame show on Saturday that after the GW game last week he wrote the first 3 B12 games on the board - OSU, @TCU, and @KU. He asked the team which game they thought was the most important of the 3. Some said OSU because it was next and some said KU because it was the rivalry game. oscar then circled the TCU game, noting that he was confident that they would be "up" for the other two since they were against top teams, but worried that TCU would be a trap game.

Games like tonight are games when guys like Shane, Gip, and Will ( :crossfingers:) need to show some leadership and make sure everyone is focused. Hopefully Marcus is motivated since this is somewhat of a homecoming game for him. Same goes for Gip.

5 Things to watch for

1. TCU plays a ton of zone, I expect us to totally hammer them on the boards.

2. Kyle Anderson is the only player on their team with a positive Assist to TO rate (36.6 Ar / 20.0 TOr), If Jevon can take him out of the game their offense should become very ugly.

4. Westicles and Spradling will most likely draw Brandon Parrish mach up he is a very good shooter but won't put the ball on the deck that often.  His eFG% is 55.6 and he is drilling 42.9% of his threes. We have been very effective defending this type of player.

5. The only thing scary about this game is that it is our first true road game.

65 points will win this game for the Cats. Anderson and Parrish are the only players offensively worth a crap for TCU, they should have a lot of trouble scoring the ball tonight.

Shane is due.  If we get GW Shane, then we will smoke 'em from 3.  Then, Shane can disappear for KU, naturally.

I was at the @TCU game last year and their arena is a effing ghost town. This is a joke of a road game and we will take care of business. The only problem we will have tonight is the TCU arena is not big enough to hold our huge nuts.

I hope this is the game Jevon finds offensive rhythm, he has shown how talented he is but hasn't been efficient in the offense yet. I still think Jevon is the best point guard we have landed in modern basketball.  :gocho:

Beating the zone is all about ball rotation and getting penetration... we haven't been really good at penetration (speaking about our team here).  Jevon has changed that part of game for us as shown in the GW and OSU games.

Jevon = Penetration

At what point does oscar threaten to cut off Omari's manhood if he takes another 3 point jumpshot?

Would rather have Omari take a three than Westicles. Westicles has a worse jump shot than Dom did.

Denied. Plus, Wes' shot will get better.

Yes and dribbling into the lane with his head down and turning it over. That works sometimes though inexplicably. :ck:

TCU is bad. Really bad. They aren't quite the worst Big 12 team in the last 12 years (last year's TCU team at #264 kenpom gets that honor) but they will likely finish close. Currently they sit at #219, 5th worst only behind 2013 TCU, 2013 Tech (#233), 2012 Tech (#243), and 05 Baylor (#233). In league games only, the also feature the 2nd worst defensive efficiency (1.18 ppp, only 05 Baylor at 1.21 ppp was worse) in the last 12 years and they currently are the worst defensive rebounding team ever (45.2% OR% allowed, only 3 other teams have given up >40%). It is really amazing that opponents rebound almost half their misses in Big 12 games, making a missed shot almost literally a 50-50 proposition for the offense to get the rebound.

Needless to say, this is a game K-State should win soundly and we will. Yeah, we have to be careful of Anderson and a few others, but they are so bad at so many things and are worse on the road.

A few notables:

03 NU (3-13 Big 12) - #151 kenpom, .86 OEff, 1.04 DEff.
04 aTM (0-16) - #188 kenpom, .98 OEff, 1.15 DEff. (Baylor won 3 league games, but was worse in kenpom at #202, and in both OEff and DEff.)
05 BU (1-15) - #233 kenpom, .98 OEff, 1.21 DEff.
07 CU (3-13) - #210 kenpom, .94 OEff, 1.12 DEff.
09 CU (1-15) - #179 kenpom, .92 OEff, 1.10 DEff.
10 NU (2-14) - #90 kenpom, .95 OEff, 1.10 DEff.

:sdeek: TCU is sooo bad.

The last 3 seasons have seen some really bad Big 12 teams.

2013 Tech (3-15) - #233 kenpom, .89 OEff, 1.11 DEff.
2013 TCU (2-16) - #264 kenpom, .86 OEff, 1.10 DEff.
2012 Tech (1-17) - #243 kenpom, .84 OEff, 1.09 DEff.

This just makes last year's TCU upset of KU even more astounding. Its literally one of the biggest upsets in the last 30 years of college basketball (and probably more than that).

Looking at Tech also makes what Tubby is doing there pretty amazing too.

i'm not really sold on tech.  are they better than last year?  sure.  they were historically terrible last year, tubby would have to be a mongloid to not have them improved.  so to say what he's done is amazing seems like a really long reach.  they're +2 conf wins over last year at this point but I bet tech won't win another game.

Their improvement on offense is really significant. To go from .89 ppp to 1.09 ppp (Big 12 games) in one season with the same guys is impressive to me, of course that could be a reflection that Chris Walker was just terrible too.

imo their roster last year was under-performing.  credit to tubby for getting them to play better but amazing?  you want amazing?
look at the transformation of the roster from the 66506 and how many new minutes are being played y-o-y and the ppg of these studs.

Clams makes a great point.

Also keep in mind everyone's scoring is up this year: Tech went from 9th to 4th returning (almost) everyone. KSU Cats went from 5th to 1st in defense despite losing everyone. Advantage: oscar

Our case is sort of strange, especially considering that scoring is up so much.

oscar also went from 2nd (barely) in offense to 9th, a drop of .07 ppp. Defensive ppp is pretty much the same.

Average PPP for the league is at 1.07 compared to 1.02 last year.

I hope we don't give up 67 pts to TCU.
They ave 0.91 on 68 poss vs road top 100 (our defense at home is as good as they will face)
We allow 0.93 on 66 poss at home vs top 100 (their offense has more issues than teams we have already faced)

But, I don't know what our energy level will be all night long.
Still hoping for a 80- 57 type score

Does are ppg really effect anything directly? I hate that on ESPN the stat rankings they show are all offense.  It makes it hard to quantify our strengths without an awesome national ranking for our defense.
