Pullen, who generated some NBA buzz with his performance in the NCAA Tournament, was noncommittal when asked if he would consider testing the waters following his junior season.
"I'm going to talk to my family and see what we're going to do," he said. "I don't know. I've just got to talk to my family, sit down with coach and see what happens."
-
Pullen is NOT ready for the NBA. If he goes pro this year watch him go MIA for two years like Bill Walker.
-

-
Well, afaik you are free to "test" the waters and still come back to school.
Unlike Self though, Frank will prob. give it to him straight.
-
Hope he does test. Though I don't think Jake has any real NBA potential.
Curt, is who I'm worried about leaving. Hopefully he stays because he will have a monster year next season.
-
im sure he or the team will talk to nba people and see where pullen could go but when they realize its not too high i doubt he will enter the draft
-
Come on guys. Jake is no Tommy Mason Griffin.
-
Compare Jake to a guy like Burks, who will also be back next year. Not concerned about defections, and I think next year could be hoops' 98. Think of this as '97.
-

Excellent analogy.
I'm not sure my nuts can take another 98 though.
-
would be shocked if he left.
-
If he's projected in the 1st round he should go. But I really don't think he will be.

Oh, sweet Jeebus. Please no.
-

This.
-
I'm not sure if Pullen is a NBA prospect because I have no idea what they look for. However, if he can make decent money playing ball, he should take it. Pullen owes us nothing. After this year, he is paid in full.
I hope he comes back, because I'm selfish, but I truly only want what's best for him. Also, the more kids you put in the league is always best for the program.
-
Yeah. He should go if it looks like this will be his peak.
-
Yeah. He should go if it looks like this will be his peak.
he will be just as good next year and he doesnt fit the typical pro offense...
-

With Kentucky losing, this year feels a lot like '98. Kentucky was the only team that really worried me, eerily similar to the UCLA loss in '98 IMO, except for Kentucky lost after us and not before.
-
THIS is 98. Next year is 04 (if JP is gone).
-
I'd expect Jake to test the waters, work out for teams and all that just to get an idea of what he needs to work on for next year. He'll come back and we'll all be happy. Then we'll win the XII next year and take a one seed to the Elite Eight only to be knocked off by the 2011 version of Sirr Parker. The circle of life.
-
Yeah, um, Jake really isn't an NBA prospect at all. By their standards, he's too short, too slow, and not a good enough shooter or leaper. It would be great for him to make it, but it's one hell of a long shot.
-
Pullen is NOT ready for the NBA. If he goes pro this year watch him go MIA for two years like Bill Walker.
i wouldn't mind having bw's income the two years he was mia
-
Pullen couldn't hold Bill Walker's jock in the NBA. (Bill is averaging 10 ppg since getting traded to the Knicks, LOL @ suggesting he wasn't ready)
-
He was a late second, at best, after his huge perfromance against Xavier. So there was probably some scouts watching last night....unfortunately for Jake there wasn't much to like in what he did against Butler.
He will get lots of recognition going into his senior year, will have a chance to play himself into the first round. Probably tough call for him right this instant because he played so well for the first 3 games of tourney and all of the sudden people are talking about him into the NBA.
-
I have LfactorsthatgointodecidingwhethertorunthroughtryoutandevaluationstuffIQ, but don't the players who want to keep their eligibility have to pay for a lot of that out-of-pocket? Maybe the contemplation is whether it's worth the time/expense to make the rounds at this stage, not whether to actually "go pro". :dunno:
I think he'd have to do a Steph Curry stint at PG next year to really be in play for draft consideration.
-
And then disappeared against Butlers man-to-man defense. He should put his name out there...but yes, he would do well to stay for his last year if the $'s not right. Butler exposed a few issues he needs to address.
-
Pullen can be totally taken out of his game by solid defenders and go MIA for long stretches. It seems to be mental as well as physical for Jake. I love him, he's heart, he's guts the whole bit. But I think his game is still a little selfish, which is what Frank used to scream at him about. The best thing Jake could do for a chance to play in the league would be to avg about 12 points and 6 dimes a game next year. Pass first, shoot second. He'll go early second round if he does that!
-
"If everybody comes back, it could be a great experience for us next year," Pullen said. "We have a lot of maturity and know what it takes to get here. We should be able to capitalize on that."
-
Remember when Jake talked about being a one and done? Yeah. Same thing.
I was only able to find these references, but remember his quote independently.

The same arguments you guys are making for Pullen not going to the NBA are the same arguments we made for Sherron Collins.

Collins was a low 2nd-round pick after last season?

Sherron's a point though so they really aren't comparable as players. If Jake can go first round he should go.
-
difference being, our coach will make him go.
-
The same arguments you guys are making for Pullen not going to the NBA are the same arguments we made for Sherron Collins.
Sherron was projected consistently higher than Pullen is. That said, I don't lump Sherron as one of Self's dream killing victims. Sherron and Pullen are both great college players, neither has a sure-thing long NBA career.

Yes, but Sherron was also a felon and had a civil law suit pending.

True, he was probably told to get his act together by David Stern so as not to tarnish the image of the NBA.

yeah. without a doubt.

It's also stupid because he's not a first rounder. I'd be surprised if he even got picked up in the 2nd round at this point. He'll be back next year.
-
Yes, but Sherron was also a felon and had a civil law suit pending.
Sherron is a felon?
Would have been if the Lawrence DA wasn't beholden to the University. There was plenty of evidence to charge him with a felony.
-
i dont think jake is going because the opportunities arent there for him this year. if you browse various mock drafts he isnt anywhere to be found even in the second round. im sure jake and frank will talk to some people and see but most likely they will see where teams want him to improve and he can do that his senior year.
-
If Jake stays, he's pretty much a lock to get the season scoring record. He now sits at 1506 points, 609 points behind Evans' 2115. With a repeat of this year's 37 game season he'd need to average 16.5 PPG to surpass Evans. Even with a season of only 34-35 games, he'd need to average less than 18 PPG. This year he averaged 19.3 PPG>
-
I think he'll struggle to get open looks next year without denis running the show.
-
I think he'll struggle to get open looks next year without denis running the show.
Meh. If the big men step up, they can run an inside-out game that should get him looks or else allow our posts to score a bajillion points a game.
-
I think he'll struggle to get open looks next year without denis running the show.
Depends how good Kelly/Judge/Samuels become. And how McGruder develops. That is a valid concern though.
-
I think he'll struggle to get open looks next year without denis running the show.
I think our inside game will help minimalize the loss of Denis. Think we'll see a decrease in his ppg if he ends up playing a lot at the point.
-
I love Jake. LOVE him. But he's sort of slow. Isn't speed important in the NBA? :dunno:
-
Could this play into Jake's decision?

I assume you mean it pushes him to come back? the last thing Jake wants if he want to get drafted this year is "the floodgates to open".

meh, I think Puen leaving would make next year a lot of fun. Another year of overacheiving.

Yeah, I mean with our frontcourt we couldn't be that terrible. Missouri would rape us though.

Marcus Morris is better than anybody you have in the frontcourt. Your backcourt will be a joke without Pullen/Clemente. Also, I hate to break it to you, but K-State was all over Little/Reed/Releford.

Yeah, Collins and Aldrich were ridiculous. No doubt they were elite talents. Fact remains that:

MM is a good player, but no leader (just like Cole was a great player, but not a leader of men). He is a head case almost as bad as Taylor, when things don't go his way early he shuts it down. Little cannot be a leader thanks to Self's forcing him to redshirt and undermining him to the rest of his team. Self completely torpedoed Little's carreer for a shot at the title this year with Xavier. Brady Morningstar is no leader and you damn well know that. He's too afraid of the big stage and wilts under pressure. Reed will obviously be the KU fan favorite (despite the fact that MM is a much better player, but alas it IS KU), but he will not have the ball enough in his hands to command respect from his teammates.

JFC, that does remind me that only one of KU's projected starters average double digits (barely) last season

If Henry comes back, that team is easily top five.
Only at KU would the projected #8 pick in the draft even entertain the thought of coming back. And only at KU would the fans expect them to.

Selby taking a visit to Kentucky. LOL.
PG Josh Selby (No. 4)
Schools in the mix: Arizona, Connecticut, Kansas, Kentucky and Tennessee
A one-time Tennessee commitment, Selby is considered by many to be a Kansas lean. He has visited the school twice and has recently cancelled scheduled visits to Connecticut and Kentucky. There is also talk of Tennessee possibly making inroads in an attempt to win Selby back. He is scheduled to announce his decision April 17 at the Jordan Brand All-Star Game.
-
All of these hypotheticals are laughable.
Jake won't leave.
If he's smart, Henry will leave.
I haven't read anything indicating that Selby is a KU lean. Everything I've read (mostly things from the Phog) indicates that Selby will probably end up at Kentucky because of his desire to play with Lamb and their desire for starting time. Also, Tennessee has recently come back into the mix.
If these three things turn out to be true then KU will not be a top 5 team next year, would be lucky to be top ten.

There is also talk of Tennessee possibly making inroads in an attempt to win Selby back. He is scheduled to announce his decision April 17 at the Jordan Brand All-Star Game.

You have no clue what you're talking about. Brandon Knight is the one who is probably going to end up at Kentucky.
-
Also, you are wrong about Doron Lamb as well.
G Doron Lamb (No. 21)
Schools in the mix: Arizona, Connecticut, Kansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma and West Virginia
The latest word concerning Lamb's recruitment is that he is truly undecided at this point. He has officially visited all of his schools except for West Virginia. Arizona has a strong connection with the shooting guard since he played travel team ball with the New York Gauchos under Emmanuel Richardson, who is now an Arizona assistant. Also, Lamb will announce his decision at the Jordan Brand Game along with Selby. Could they both be headed to Kansas?

yeah, same with you and Collins/Aldrich/Xavier (< pronounced it like the team we beat)
Selby

Little/Reed
Morris

Ben, you don't really mean that. Seriously, you're going to replace Collins with Selby and Cole with the Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) Morris and you expect them to be just a step worse than this year's team?
-
So who is KU booting this offseason to make room for all these recruits?
Obviously C. Henry. Can someone here help me out with the math?
Little might be in troubs too.

Selby has a chance to be every bit as good as Collins. He'll be a better NBA prospect without a doubt. Markieff was more effective than Aldrich in a lot of games this year, especially on offense. For as good as Aldrich was on defense, he was limited offensively.

Again, I haven't read much on the two other than what has been said on the Phog but few posters on the Phog seem as confident as you that KU will land these two.

You must be looking in all the wrong places then. Selby has been penciled into next year's starting lineup by about half the phog already.

That's true, but I also though CJ's potential scholly was the "ransom" to keep Xavier around for longer. Well then CJ will be a walk-off next year then.

Maybe so. Still, assuming KU loses Aldrich and Henry and Pullen remains on the team, KU is looking at third in the Big XII next year behind K-State and Baylor. If Self misses on Selby and Lamb then I would say Missouri gets the nod over you guys as well.

Chance? yes. Not immediately, and surely not surrounded with the experience and players that Collins was in his formiddable years. GMAFB on Markieff > Aldrich. Aldrich's presence in the paint is/was far greater than Markieff. Sure, Markieff might be able to draw out the opposing player's bigs, but nobody is going to give two sh*ts about attacking a front court of Morris'.

The Big XII hasn't been nearly this strong and KU loses three of their starting five while K-State loses one key player and Baylor loses one (or two, if/when Udoh goes). Is it really that shocking?

Really eating on Ben to see ku fail so often in the NCAA tourney under Self.

Every team has a primary option. Every coach on every team has someone they want to have shooting the ball given a choice. To say differently is Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).
Are you not understanding that having Cole has the other big down low provided major opportunity for marcus that he probably couldn't have created on his own?

Self's last NCAA title - '08
Izzo's last NCAA title - '00
:jerk:
I will take 33-3, Big 12 champs, #1 overall in the country and a 2nd round upset loss over what programs like UNC, UConn, Arizona, UCLA, Indiana, etc, did this season. The NCAA tournament is tough, man. You said it yourself... to be a good program you just have to get there repeatedly and hope that you get lucky every once in a while.

I will take Self's one national title over Roy's four Final Fours at KU any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Izzo is an incredible coach, but his teams haven't finished once they get to the Final Four (except for '00 in Indianapolis).

So, does this mean Manning is an over-rated post player coach since he couldn't get a McDonald's All-American post to be nothing better than meh on offense, despite working with him for three years & apparently thousands of summer camps?

For a fanbase that still has permaboners because of an Elite Eight appearance, you'd think you guys would acknowledge that Self has taken three different programs to the Elite Eight. He has taken KU to four Sweet Sixteens, three Elite Eights, a Final Four, and a National Championship. That is nothing to look down upon, especially as a K-State fan whose team just went to its first Elite Eight since 1988.

No, it just means that Markieff is more versatile on offense. Look no further than Markieff's 52.7% 3-point percentage.
Aldrich improved a ton during his time at KU.

None of the guys in the projected lottery for this year's draft are playing in the Final Four. KU only had one guy who was a lottery pick when they won it all in '08 (Rush). Both the Morris twins are on NBA scouts' radar, and Marcus will definitely be drafted in a year or two.

So do the numbers.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=36170
-3.5 ppg worse than last year
-Worse assist to turnover ratio from last year
-3% worse shooting from the field
-11% worse shooting from the FT line
-Never scored more than 20 points in a single game (did it 7 times the season before)
All while having a probable NBA lottery pick floating around the perimeter which he didn't have last year.
Danning Manning gets more credit for the typical freshman to sophomore bump in offensive production from post players than any coach I've ever seen.

Jake also said this earlier this year, FWIW.
"I'm a winner, man. The thing that always haunts me is through high school never winning the AAU or state championship because of Derrick (Rose), who stole two titles of mine," he said. "If the pros are calling and we have a good team and I feel that we can compete for a national championship, I'll come back with no hesitation. I won't think about it. I won't lose sleep over it. I'll come back.
"The NBA is going to be there and if I continue to play hard, it'll still be there."
