:dunno: Advice? I sit around a lot of execs and I have to do a lot of conference calls with them hovering over me. How do you get over this anxiety and be yourself around this ppl? I'm still trying to figure it out.

Their just ppl. Treat them like anyone else and just do what they ask you to.
-
Are you out of your league at your new job, meaning overmatched by what is asked of you? If so, then you should be nervous. If not, then I'd suggest not being a pussy. I'm positive there's nothing special about any of the assholes milling about you. They're you, just older if that helps.
-
Dude you used to talk for a living, didn't you?
-
hey look, another thread where fanning talks about his job
-
Offer them cocaine and they'll accept you into their clique

That does help. They're just a bit intimidating. The only thing that sucks is learning software. They've been around it way longer and say it takes awhile to know. Sometimes talking to IT ppl is like speaking spanish. I'm coming around though. I was 2nd on the team in sales last month and that was the first month I had an account list.
-
WS08, is your software something that you could use? If so, use the crap out of it. Create fake accts, jobs, etc and really get to understand it rather than just memorizing the stuff IT explains to you. Understand what IT is explaining.
Understanding product is the key to sales.

If the guys around you told you it takes a while to figure out and you're doing well in sales, what on Earth are you worried about?
Are you worried they won't like you? My armchair psychology may be spotting a trend....

simple case of zero confidence
#you don't know wtf you're doing
when you learn the crap it will be pud city. population: wc08

Cause they're also demanding a lot right away. They are pressuring us to create a bigger pipeline soon. It's kind of a catch 22. A lot of the sales I've received are existing accounts reaching out to me for quotes and other software related things.
As the talking for a loving thing, that was sports, I can speak all day on something I'm familiar with. However, as you know, sound like an idiot when I don't.

it will take about 10,000 hrs and then you should be silky smooth

Wacky, I'll be in KC on Friday. I'll swing by and give you some pointers on how to do your job. Have a spreadsheet of all your clients ready and we'll knock this out in an hour.

Do what you love Fanning. You don't love your job, you love the money

Yep, gotta get that 10k in. You aren't crap if you don't have your 10k.

After 2.5 years developing software at my current company i still don't know how to use half the program. Then again I don't need to so w/e.

also, it's better that people think you're an idiot than to open your mouth and prove it

Sell, sell, sell, sell . . . all the process stuff will come.
You won't keep your job by knowing the processes (note: I didn't say NOT know the rules), if you sell a bunch, they'll help you with the process.
Nobody is going to say, "Well Wacky didn't sell $hit, but dang it he really knows the processes if he were to sell something."

I'll be honest, Fanning, a lot of guys that sell software don't know how it's used.
A lot of times, they bring in subject matter experts to close a deal if people start asking hard questions. I end up doing a sales thing at least once every other week for that reason.
You're most likely going to get in the door and bring someone else in to help you close. If it's a really big deal, they won't let you fly solo if you're new.

Are you the subject matter expert and if so do you get a cut of the sales commission if they call you in?

I clarified that after editing. I am the SME, and no, I don't get a cut. However, the payback is in executive exposure. The bigger the deal, the more eyes, and the more eyes, the greater chance you'll get a better review, better promotion, etc. Helping sales/business dev is pretty good professional capital. It's really helped me along in my job.

Our SME's have bonuses tied to certain segment sales, so it behooves them to offer genuine help.
-
And, WC, if you're nervous, that's fine. There's always going to be some high pressure deal or something that will set the bar higher. Your targets are always going to get bigger. If they aren't, I'd suggest looking for a new job because the company isn't going anywhere.
Besides, intrinsic fear is a good motivator. Not unhealthy fear promoted by bad managers, but fear of failing and not doing as well as you'd like.

I think they should get paid.

fanning, you should read "The Inner Game of Tennis".

Me too. But generally I'm in favor of individual or small team type bonuses as opposed to if the entire $4B global company hit its sales goals.

If I don't know my crap well enough and I need you to help me close and you do help me close, then you should get some of the money I'm getting for closing. If I don't like it, then I should get better. If I want to hungry hippo those benjamins, then I need to be a smarter hippo, you dig?(clams bait)

Precisely. The boss hogs filling the trough should be first in line to eat from it.
-
Belly up Boss Hawg! :lick:
-
Wacky, you should just find the meanest, biggest boss hog filly at that office and you know . . . take care of business. That way you will always be guaranteed a spot next to her at the trough, and you just know that's going to be a prime spot.

i have been working in the industry for almost 40 years now and i honestly cant remember if i was nervous or not.
good luck with the new job, wacky!
-
My first big kid job, I used to stay up late every night studying accounting texts and software manuals, out of sheer terror.
Worked out well in the end. Fear is a very effective motivator.

Wacky, I'm still waiting on that client spreadsheet.

This is exactly right. Don't listen to all these guys calling your out for being nervous and a little scared. It's normal and can be a good thing as long as you can control it so you're not a total stuttering idiot around these people. The best way to fight nerves is to be well prepared probably even over prepared. You want to know your stuff so well that you're sitting there just hoping they ask you a question.

You sound like an awful person. Like someone that is just terrible to be around or interact with.

I am expecting a very well prepared and technically sound post in response to that.

I think you'd be surprised. I'm curious are you basing that off of this one post or my posting in general? I don't really post here a whole lot.

The above. I don't recall having read anything else you've posted. I would be very surprised if I wasn't 100% correct. Your advice was to be good at your job. No crap? Really ground breaking stuff there. It was also for fanning to put in more time rather than just try to look the part. rough ridin' fanning. JFC. Verdict: you're terrible.
-
you probably won't be scared anymore when you figure out how incredibly rough ridin' easy your job is. give yourself a month.

Fake it until you make it, Wacky.
