1. Natalie Portman - Black Swan
This may be a little higher than it deserves due to, what I believe is, the best directing we've seen in our lifetime. But it definitely belongs in the top 5 hands down. What a transition that girl made, and being able to show good and evil through the same character is absolutely incredible.
2. Daniel Day Lewis - There Will Be Blood
You could tell at some point P.T. Anderson just told DDL to take over the entire thing. Got rid of an actor in lieu of Paul Dano because he wanted to be able to literally slap him around in the church scene, and the first actor wouldn't let him. Lots of nonverbal acting, which makes it hard to show personality/emotion, but he got the job done (duh, he's DDL).
3. Heath Ledger - The Dark Knight
Admittedly this is a guilty pleasure. Any decent actor can make a character using lots of ticks and weird habits (see Brad Pitt in Inglorious Basterds), but he made the whole damn movie. People saw it multiple times in theaters because they wanted more Joker. And it was a good job by Christopher Nolan to not make the entire movie about him, thus leaving viewers wanting more.

Agree so hard on number 1 and 3 it is not even funny. Number two...meh...I would put Heath at two.

1. Will Smith in "Hitch"
2. Kevin James in "Hitch"
3. Eva Mendes in "Hitch"
-
can you list all movies since 2005 to make this easier?
also does this include 2005?
-
1. Will Smith in "Hitch"

I can honestly say I hated the movie Hitch and would rather stab my eye balls out with a needle than watch that movie again.
-

It does. And it only includes movies coughcoughmichigancatcoughcough.
-
why 2005? what the hell?
-
Yeah, Hitch came out in 2005 so it should totally count
-
why 2005? what the hell?
'cause it's my thread. And also because that's when I became a movie critic.

They call for totally different things. Having to get a character across in 2 hours or so is way different than having to get a character across in 50+ hours.
-
Joaquin Phoenix in the master would make my list, not sure about the other 2.
-
1. DDL - Lincoln
2. DDL - Lincoln
3. DDL - Lincoln
I would put that old MS chick in here but she wins to much.
-
i could watch christoph waltz in his two big roles err single day, but i don't think i would rank them above heath ledger as joker.
-
off topic but movie most heavily influenced by the soundtrack, drive.
-
ddl-there will be blood
christoph waltz-inglorious bastards
heath ledger-the dark knight
This was very easy for me. Could watch each of those performances indefinitely.
-
Michael Shannon in "Take Shelter" is great

and a lead actor in a comedy is totally different from a supporting actor in a drama. So maybe just rename the thread "best lead actor in a dramatic motion picture since 2005". Just a thought.
-
Agree with Bread's list. Two honorable mentions:
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was awesome in Capote
Leo in Departed
-

Good call. Mind blowing performance.

There's a reason that no one ever wins best actor for a comedy. The Academy isn't a perfect institution, michcat, and neither is Jake. Thread title is fine.
-
Brad Pitt- Inglorious Bastards
R gos- Crazy, Stupid, love
Jessie Spano- Re-run epi about being addicted to caffeine pills.
-
1. Christoph Waltz- Inglorious Basterds
2. Heath Ledger- The Dark Knight
3. *Daniel Day-Lewis- Gangs of New York
*Think Gangs is DDL's best movie, but I haven't seen Lincoln yet.

I like the golden globes for separating comedy and drama.
-
Also, surprised no one has Jack Nicholson in One Flew on here.

I like that too about the golden globes.
in 2008 Downey Jr. was oscar-nominated for Tropic Thunder

30+ years too early for this thread

1. Logan Lerman - The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)
Basically because I am biased about this movie, but he was the most likable character I've ever watched. Not many actors could have pulled it off like he did.
2. Robert Downey Jr. - Tropic Thunder (2008)
Hear me out. Is this my favorite movie of all time? Not at all. But think about what he did... he played a totally whacked out Australian guy that was posing/made up as a black guy, and made it totally believable. Regardless of what you think of the movie, it was great work by him.
3. Christoph Waltz - Inglorious Basterds (2009)
The fact that I had never seen him before this movie probably helps him. That opening scene, wow. The way he just made me terrified that he was about to kill everyone in the building (which he did kind of), all while acting seemingly friendly. Great stuff.
-
One of my favorites was David Strathairn in Good Night and Good Luck.
I also loved Robert Downey Jr. in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (great movie)
-
Bread's list is spot on.
For a TV show, Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad is pretty awesome as well. I didn't want to just limit this to movies.
Sidenote: Two of my all-time favorite performance are Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon and Kevin Spacey in American Beauty in 1999 in addition to the classical performances from the greats.
-
I also loved Robert Downey Jr. in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (great movie)
 most underrated movie ever? possibly.
Val: Look up "idiot" in the dictionary, do you know what you'll find?
Downey: A picture of me?
Val: No. The definition of the word "idiot", which you rough ridin' are.
-
Agree with Bread's list. Two honorable mentions:
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was awesome in Capote
Leo in Departed
I could watch him all day. Arguably one of the most adaptable actors in the game imo. plays a lovable loser/funny guy in Twister, suit wearing bitch in Big Lebowski, indescribably awesome character in Capote, zero fucks given badass in Charlie Wilson's War, etc. I'd continue, but embarrasingly enough, I have not seen The Master yet.
possible shame post with my obession with PSH.

i also like his grumpy manager in Moneyball, as well as complete loser sad case in Boogie Nights

WHITE CHOCOLATE!!!
i still say that when shooting hoops, sadly.

Another 1999 movie that was awesome was Magnolia. John C. Reilly + PSH + Raining Frogs = Win

I'm with ya, Rick. He doesn't get near enough credit because he's too often in the supporting role, but he's absolutely phenomenal. I haven't seen The Master yet either though :frown:
-

about went there, but figured I'd get PI'd to death because I really think that is a bad movie, but PSH is a redeeming part.
-
anybody else think that if the rumors were true and they casted Depp as the Riddler and PSH as the Penguin in the next Dark Knight it would be the best Dark Knight ever?
-
depends on who directs doesn't it?

clooney

all sorts of good stuff happened in Synecdoche New York. crap even his performance in Twister is great.
-
Have you guys seen 25th Hour? Great movie all around, but PSH was great in it. Hell, he made MI3 good.
-

Tom Cruise's best performance.

PSH was good in it but all the credit goes to Norton in that one. Anna Paquin still creeped me the eff out.

yes, despite him wearing a ridiculous land thief hat throughout, Dusty makes that movie

Dead on Jakesie! Cruise was a stud in Tropic Thunder as well, but I prefer Magnolia.
-
1. Tom Hardy - Bronson
2. Sharito Copley - District 9
3. Javier Bardem - no country for old men ( bad guy )
-
since this is now a PSH thread, his best movie is doubt. second best is before the devil knows you're dead.

magnolia is one of those movies that tons of people talk crap on, and i never understood it. i love that movie.

i'm sure it made no sense if you are a Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) and can't follow a film's storyline.
-
Magnolia and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead are similar in the fact that they are both extremely depressing

-
Well mocat, thanks for asking! I am a bad person and have not watched it yet :frown:
Willesgirl...watch that movie. It's awesome. I'm a Life Aquatic guy myself (Moonrise Kingdom and Darjeerling Limited are also solid), but Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore are just the best.
