Also, surprised no one has Jack Nicholson in One Flew on here.
I think what my friend Mitch is trying to say is that true love is blind.

and a lead actor in a comedy is totally different from a supporting actor in a drama. So maybe just rename the thread "best lead actor in a dramatic motion picture since 2005". Just a thought.

There's a reason that no one ever wins best actor for a comedy. The Academy isn't a perfect institution, michcat, and neither is Jake. Thread title is fine.

I like the golden globes for separating comedy and drama.

I like that too about the golden globes.

in 2008 Downey Jr. was oscar-nominated for Tropic Thunder

1. Logan Lerman - The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

Basically because I am biased about this movie, but he was the most likable character I've ever watched. Not many actors could have pulled it off like he did.

2. Robert Downey Jr. - Tropic Thunder (2008)

Hear me out. Is this my favorite movie of all time? Not at all. But think about what he did... he played a totally whacked out Australian guy that was posing/made up as a black guy, and made it totally believable. Regardless of what you think of the movie, it was great work by him.

3. Christoph Waltz - Inglorious Basterds (2009)

The fact that I had never seen him before this movie probably helps him. That opening scene, wow. The way he just made me terrified that he was about to kill everyone in the building (which he did kind of), all while acting seemingly friendly. Great stuff.

One of my favorites was David Strathairn in Good Night and Good Luck.

I also loved Robert Downey Jr. in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (great movie)

Bread's list is spot on.

For a TV show, Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad is pretty awesome as well.  I didn't want to just limit this to movies.

Sidenote: Two of my all-time favorite performance are Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon and Kevin Spacey in American Beauty in 1999 in addition to the classical performances from the greats.

 most underrated movie ever? possibly.

Val: Look up "idiot" in the dictionary, do you know what you'll find?
Downey: A picture of me?
Val: No. The definition of the word "idiot", which you rough ridin' are.

Agree with Bread's list.  Two honorable mentions:

Phillip Seymour Hoffman was awesome in Capote
Leo in Departed

I could watch him all day.  Arguably one of the most adaptable actors in the game imo.  plays a lovable loser/funny guy in Twister, suit wearing bitch in Big Lebowski, indescribably awesome character in Capote, zero fucks given badass in Charlie Wilson's War, etc. I'd continue, but embarrasingly enough, I have not seen The Master yet.

possible shame post with my obession with PSH.

I'm with ya, Rick.  He doesn't get near enough credit because he's too often in the supporting role, but he's absolutely phenomenal.  I haven't seen The Master yet either though  :frown:

about went there, but figured I'd get PI'd to death because I really think that is a bad movie, but PSH is a redeeming part.

anybody else think that if the rumors were true and they casted Depp as the Riddler and PSH as the Penguin in the next Dark Knight it would be the best Dark Knight ever?

Have you guys seen 25th Hour? Great movie all around, but PSH was great in it. Hell, he made MI3 good.

PSH was good in it but all the credit goes to Norton in that one. Anna Paquin still creeped me the eff out.
