If you are giving up something because it is bad for you and you would rather not do it, I think it is silly to need an outside reason to do so, have some self-control. If you are just giving up something for the sake of giving it up in some sort of sacrificial sense, why bother?
I'm not going to let this devolve into an internet theology discussion because those are just the worst, but it is supposed to be sacrificial. We bother because it's part of our religion and it's important to us.
Also, for what it's worth, I completely understand why people think it's stupid.
I'm just explaining what it is because I recognize that from the outside looking in, it looks really stupid and doesn't make any sense.

For lent, I am giving up caring about people who don't truly care about me or my son. I have an amazing, loving, caring, smart, funny, inquisitive, handsome little boy who is loving and kind to everyone he meets. I am done trying to make contact to keep people in his life. Or caring what these people say about me. I am a single mom, and a good one at that who is successful and supports her son alone. I have no respect for people or family that don't take care of their own, or encourage and support someone who doesn't care and support their own child. You are not a good person or a good woman if you stand by someone who isn't a good father or friend or aunt or uncle or grandparent or teacher or friend, whatever the role is in life. Or if you bash the person who is doing everything in their power to give a child the best life they can. The end :)

That's not really what it's about... You aren't doing it as a tribute. The idea is to give yourself a daily reminder. For example, in the times when you'd normally be on social media, maybe you call your mom or say a few prayers.

i think any criticism of people making a big deal about not drinking a coke or crushing a snickers for a month is entirely warranted and justified. lent is supposed to be spiritually enriching, not attention getting.

Had a friend who gave up booze except with meals...so his meals just ended up lasting for hours.

i've done that one several times. gets hard on friday's when you're searching out a fish sandwich to eat and pass by a wendy's (their north pacific cod sandwich = elite)
I had one of those last week, tasted like a filet-o-fish mumped a can of sardines.

This is why German monks are badass at brewing beer. The fast only applied to food, so they would drink 5 litres of booze a day during fasts and 6 on big days like Easter.

that's weird. i eat 5 of them a year and they're always pretty good. had one yesterday, was pretty good. t's and p's.
