Title: Contacts
Post by: DQ12 on January 31, 2013, 02:05:11 PM
Hey guys, Dlew12 here.  Got contact lenses today.  I have kind of small eye openings and it took me prolly an hour to get them in the first time.  It was a pretty miserable experience.  Eyes watering everywhere.

Will it get better or is this whole little project doomed to fail?  Can't spend an hour every morning shoving these damn things in my face.  Some one tell me it's all going to be okay.

hey dlew, steve dave here. how are things with you? I got contacts last year for the first time. at first it sucked and I was awful at getting them into and out of my eyes. I also was convinced about 5 times that the contact was in the back of my eye and lost but it probably just fell out or something. now I am good at it and it is very pud. you will be happy you got them once you get the hang of them.

also one time my eye hurt and entire day and turned bright red and it turns out my contact was folded in half all day. that sucks, but doesn't happen now.

what a relief.  this is basically the exact response i was hoping for. thanks.

nobody else needs to say anything and mods can lock the thread if they feel like.  if they don't want to they don't have to.  Either way, really.

Hey dlew.  Did you ever ask yourself when they put those wires between all the telephone poles?

i had contacts for a while. it was very hard to get them in and never got easier. also no one ever complemented me on them. instead people asked why i blinked so much. you will be very happy when you give them up and stick with a nice pair of spectacles.

i don't really know what you're getting at, but on a related note, i was talking about telephone wire installation with my dad over break and i told him that i think universal wireless internet will be our generation's telephone wire installation.

Well one time a friend of mine got glasses and on the way home he asked "hey when did they string those wires up on the telephone poles?"  He could never see the wires before.

Hey Dlew!

I've had contacts since 7th grade and although it looks like our good friend Steven David already answered your first question i am confident you will have ALOT more.

Once your eyes get used to contacts I would recommend getting the disposable contacts that you can sleep in and last 30 days. I've been rocking these since college and most of the time I forget I even have them in! After a while they can get pretty dry in the mornings so I usually take them out about once a week and wear glasses for the day.

If you have any other questions let us know!

I got the daily disposables. Seems like that is going to be the most convenient way once i learn to get the damn things in my eyes.  The learning curve could be pretty steep, but hey, that's life.  That's life.

I pretty much never ever take my contacts out. Probably the weirdest thing about me actually. I will wear a single pair of contact lenses for pretty much ever, or until they get really unbearable. I have really great lenses though and I am used to wearing them.

I have never used daily contacts but I know I was frustrated the first few times I put them in and they definitely felt weird. I have sleepable contacts now, though. So I probably only put contacts in maybe 5 or 6 times a month...

Never knew you had bad eyes, Dlew. Thought those were reading glasses  :dunno:

I also use daily disposables. if you go swimming or hiking or other things and one gets knocked out of your eye it's no big whoop. just throw in another one back at the hotel room since you brought like 15 extras. and losing 10 or 12 isn't going to really set you back like monthlys would.

I find with monthly's I never switch every 30 days.  Sometimes go 60 or more.  So I always have extras (probably have two year's worth now).  How often do you lose them?  Less than 1 or 2 a year for me.

Congrats on the new peepers, Dlew!!  Yeah when I got contacts my first year at KSU I was almost late to class that morning because it took me like 25-30 minutes to get them both in.  The act of putting something on my eyeball without blinking/freaking out was tough at first.  Trust me bro, it gets easier.

I have monthly contacts that I am supposed to be able to sleep in but if I do then I have to immediately take them out and rinse them off because they make my eyes all dry and gross feeling. They are Purevision. What kind do you guys have that sleep with them in?

When they taught me to put them in, they made me touch my bare eyeball a bunch of times to get used to it.

Its weird how the connections in your brain work. When I saw a thread titled "contacts" I thought it would some nugget about the list of people in dlew's phone and how he knows like 16 people named John, and 4 people named Jon, but does not have a single contact named Jim. Didn't even cross my mind it was about contact lenses.

I've worn contacts for 18 years. You get better at putting them in (I still cant do it without a mirror though) but you never get used to them. Mine burn almost every single time I put them in. I don't use the daily disposables, I use the 2 week disposables, Johnson & Johnson Acuvue Advanced, but I don't throw them out every two weeks. I pop them out every 10 days or so for a night and will go right back with them until I lose them or they get too much protein on them.

When I was at K-State I went to an eye doctor across from Nichols on Anderson in the shopping center with the laundromat and the K-State Credit Union. The old guy used to get so pissed that I didn't throw them out every two weeks and give me lectures about them being medical devices and I was going to lose my vision, blah blah blah. Dude was mean, I eventually went to a lady who had her office next to Early Edition, she was amazing, loved her!!!

Acuve Oasis 2! Sometimes when I get very tired I can feel my eyes being dried out and know that if I sleep with my contacts in I'll have dry eyes in the morning, but I've never felt like they get gross. My eyes usually just spit the contact out when they're too old/dry/dirty to be worn anymore, and I put new ones in.

I actually had to remove my contacts in high school chemistry once because we were working with something that supposedly the vapors would cause soft contacts to fuse to the eyeball.

Hey Dlew12...hang in there, man. DNR this thread, because I had worn contacts since I was about 11 years old (I'm 25 now) thus I'm an expert in wearing, storing, and trouble shooting contacts.

Practice makes perfect. You will get better at placing the lens on your eyes. It takes a lot of getting used to. Just wait until the contact decides to slide up your eye and you have to dig it out from under the brow. It sucks and it hurts, but it's part of the deal and it will happen.

You will learn the duration for which contacts are good. For instance, you can't always just wear them for 12 hours and expect your vision to be crystal clear. You will get halos around points of light. The lenses will dry out. When they do it feels extremely painful and you'll want to gouge your eyes out. Sleeping in them? Not for beginners. Another thing to think about is contact solution. There are different brands. Some brands work for different people better than others. Some people are allergic to certain brands.

I could go on, but I won't. I had LASIK about 3 weeks ago and don't have to worry about this crap anymore. I'd recommend it to anyone that has really bad vision. However, contacts served me well for a long time. They are a great alternative to glasses and that's why millions of people wear them.

Let me know if you have any Qs. Again, I am an expert

Can anyone beat JCiW/G prescription of -6.75?

Also, why the eff doesn't insurance cover LASIK? Seems like a pretty important aspect of your health to just not cover.
mine does

Hey guys let me know if you need me to use a larger font that your dorkstore eyes can see clearly. Good grief. BTW you can use a tiny font for me if you want because I have 20/15 vision and could read it easily.  (https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.smiley-lol.com%2Fsmiley%2Fmusique%2Fdanser%2Fvil-music5.gif&hash=116c991d1c2495839103cce4866dffde708a1396)

just get those lenses that change color in the light.

KKK has those, and he looks like a dork.

Also, I like my pair of glasses and my sunglasses. Do you contact people never wear glasses again?

There are some days when putting your contacts in is just a no. If you have seasonal allergies those days happen more often.

I only have one bad eye. Like, it's terrible. The other one is 20/25, which was good enough that I only wore one contact from 5th grade to college. But then I realized how bad ass I look in glasses. So then I got glasses, and fixed my 20/25 eye even though it's kind of unnecessary.

Anyway, The only advice I have is to get the ones that you only have to take out/put in once a month. If you have to put them in and take them out every day it gets really old, really fast. That's been my experience, anyway.

I typically enjoy wearing my glasses. I feel like I have a nice, stylish pair of glasses. But I don't want my everyday look to be glasses, necessarily. I'd like to be able to go out, and see well, without my glasses.

But if contacts are that much better than glasses, I'll consider it.

The peripheral vision is the biggest difference. If you have really bad eyes, sometimes having to "aim" your eyesight onto something within the scope of the glasses is a pain. But... then again, it's just moving you head a few centimeters against putting something foreign in your eye.

Bottom line, just like with anything else, if you do it every day you won't really notice. You'll wish you had contacts if you ever broke your glasses. Anyone that wears glasses should at least have a box of contacts just in case. There's nothing that makes you look like a bigger idiot than constantly squinting at crap.

You could start a service watching everyone's driveway in whatever radius your super eagle eye plus plus vision allows.  Will need a bull horn for the verbal admonishmets to the youths involved.  Pretty good way to supplement the old income.  Also your elderly neighbors will love you for being their hero.  Maybe just do an eagle screech into the bull horn as your warning to the driveway kids.  That could be your thing.  Or like another of your things.

What are you guys doing to get sand in your contacts? I've never had that issue but I did get a paper cut on my eyeball in 5th grade.

Not really sure how it happened. I woke up and my eye burned, I had a killer headache and was really light sensitive. I took my contacts out and they had sand on/in them. Pain didnt go away, had to go to the ER and I was prescribed gel to put in my eyes for a week. We had a big beach there but it's not like I was throwing sand in my eyes, no idea how that happened while I sleeped.

I just put them straight in, maybe look up a little bit so my pupil is up toward my eyelid. Once in a great while they get kind of stuck to my eye and it takes a few tries to get them out. It is really annoying when the contact gets stuck folded up under your eyelid and I can't find it and you don't know if it is still in your eye or not.
