Title: Honeymoon
Post by: AlwaysEMAW on March 16, 2010, 03:39:09 PM
Getting married in June.  We have a free condo in Scottsdale, AZ, and we want to go check out the big hole in the ground.  How long should we plan on being at the grand canyon? like, do we just look at it for about 15 minutes, or should we plan on being there for a few hours?

Also, wanna head over to Los Angeles for a couple days. Anybody know what the best beach is around there? And, what's more elite, Knott's Berry Farm, or are there enough cool things to do at Disney Land?

the best beach in LA depends on what you're wanting to do.  a lot of people might say the one i'm going to be sitting on in santa monica tomorrow, while others might prefer Paradise Cove in Malibu.  really hard to go wrong with Cali beaches as an imo.

Could be, we're college kids, so we had to go with the free condo.  I know there's a lot of shopping and stuff to do around Scottsdale, but I don't do that well with shopping for one whole day, let alone 3 or 4 in a row so am just trying to find stuff to do. Also, I don't mind driving a lot.

It's a drive from scottsdale.  Pretty cool.  you could hike around for a little while I guess.  Unless you go on a tour.

Spend a day/night in Sedona.

If you're driving you'd be better off hitting San Diego than LA.  Love LA but San Diego is better in just about every aspect.

I still have about three cases of two buck chuck from the last time we drove out there.  Good rule of thumb - whatever extra room you have in the car on the way home - fill with two buck chuck.  It looks pretty bad checking out of Trader Joe's with two shopping carts full of wine.  But well worth it.

What do you think she'll like about Beverly Hills?  It is going to be a pretty shitty honeymoon watching your wife spend a fuckload of money the whole time shopping.  Also sets the tone for the marriage.  Not how you want to start.  There is really nothing else that great in Beverly Hills other than St. Nicks bar.

I don't know that you guys have put a lot of thought into this.

Honeymoon destinations should be picked for the following reasons (in descending order):

1. Places that encourage sex -- for your sanity.
2. Exoticness -- for eliteness.
3. Places you actually want to visit -- for your enjoyment.
4. Budget considerations -- for your wallet.

If you're locked in on this Arizona idea, lock yourselves in your room and only emerge for things like dinner and massages.  Only try to cram in a bunch of activities if they're worth doing in the first place.  In other words, Grand Canyon = worthwhile day trip.  Window shopping at Beverly Hills = tremendous waste of valuable sexin' time.

Just an imo.  :dunno:

1. Duh, Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!)
2. Any place west of Kansas is exotic to me
3. Want to visit lots of places
4. Budget-about 750-1000 once we get to AZ

Airline tix out of wichita to and from AZ are from her parents. Definitely going to Grand Canyon, the LA/San Diego thing is an idea and will most likely be decided after we've been there for a few days. Thanks for your overwhelming concern, now go check your blood pressure.

you can not be serious about this whole thing. if i was a mod, i would ip check you.

you are seriously going to fly to arizona (cause her parents are paying for it), stay at a free place (whos place?), and decide what you will do only after you've been there for a few days?....... you'll then somehow get a car, pay for gas, spend hours driving to grand canyon and then 90210, and then what???? pay for the car, the gas, and the hotel in 90210 all cause you've got a free condo to stay in scottsdale for a few days beforehand? i need more details. i am only trying to help here. you are being ridiculous.

Free place is from her dad's boss.  He has a condo in Scottsdale for all of his most elite employees to vacation at, and offered it to us.  It was either this condo in AZ or nowhere, cuz we can't afford 7 nights in a hotel and still get to do anything cool. Said condo comes with an SUV with GPS. Grand Canyon will be a day trip a couple days after we get to Scottsdale. For the trip to LA, was just thinking of leaving early some morning and getting there early afternoon to hang at a beach, then go to a hotel that night, I will have a room reserved for this purpose, and hang out around LA the next day and maybe stay another.  I understand it's a stretch, but hanging out around Phoenix doesn't seem like a honeymoon.  Not exotic enough-see #2 of wrff list. I appreciate the help, really I do, but I have thought about it a little.
All we will pay for is, food, entertainment, and gas to wherever we go, and 1 or 2 nights in a hotel

let's warm this thread back up.

time- would like to go 7-10 days at the end of november/early december,
location - central america/caribbean. would like to spend it at an all-inclusive resort with the ability to get out and explore a little bit.
amenities - scuba duving availability preferred but not required.
budget - not looking for cheapest options possible, but nothing crazy

i have a significant amount of delta and hilton points, but doesn't necessarily need to be on either.

ok, now plan my honeymoon and get back to me. tia.

Sandals is one of the few all-ins that includes scuba.  I'm sure there are others that do it for an additional fee.  I am doing Sandals Ochi in April and could report back.  If booking on their site, ignore that countdown bullshit for whatever "sale" they are offering.  They offer that 24/7/365.

Also, Ron recommends Desire Cancun if you and your lady are on the adventurous side.

If the scuba diving is a top priority I am not sure Punta Cana is the best choice as it doesn't have the crystal clear water like Cozumel, Bahamas, Virgin Islands etc.  If you just want to get certified it would be fine tho.

Also, FYI for Sandals.  The dives are relatively low unless your certified beforehand.  Where we were at, the normal dive was only 30ft but if your certified than you can do 60-120ft and night dives.

Is there any limit on the amount of diving you can do for free at a Sandals?

Nope.  They have boats go out a couple times a day (at least one morning and one afternoon, then certain days have night dives).

I would assume right out front of the all inclusive. Her grandparents are trying to set this up for us. Our wedding is June 17th. We'll be in Colorado until Sunday and then fly out of Denver and be there for a week. I've never had my passport stamped, so i'm pretty pumped for it.

I stayed at an all-inclusive in costa rica, it was like a few hour bus ride from the airport, which sucked.  Especially because they drive you through these villages of like dirt poor people, and I feel bad that I'm just on my way to some place to eat and drink as much as possible for a week.

The best thing about the adults only area is that you aren't really in the hotel, so the pool was legit 30 feet from my door.  The regular hotel was at least an elevator ride and 3 minute walk to the pools and the beach.

SW stops flying everywhere to the Caribbean minus Puerto Rico (which is really close to Punta Cana) in the next couple of months. However, I think we could use our points to get to Puerto Rico, stay a night and then fly for cheap to punta cana from there. I think i've got this figured out, guys!

We've been trying to book a trip through our points on SW for the last week. We want to go to the Caribbean. Every time we click on a flight from Denver to Aruba, Bahamas, punta cana, etc. (minus Puerto Rico) it says SW will no longer be flying to this destination on "said date".  :frown:

Asking permission implies that you won't do it if he says no.
Asking for a blessing acknowledges that the woman is free to make her own choices without her father's permission, and therefore no permission is needed. And he will still ask her to marry him even if the father doesn't give a blessing.

Seriously though, I asked my FIL because it was important to my wife.  I largely defer to her regarding her side of the family.  If she didn't care about it, I wouldn't have bothered.

If your wife is fine in her role as a piece of property to be traded among men then I guess that is fine.

It was a blessing not permission situation regardless.  I think with us "living together in sin" for years, they knew that we were going to do what we wanted.

You know what's great about fil's? When they talk you up in front of ppl. I thoroughly enjoy this. Makes me feel like less of a POS.

Hey Gooch, will you give permission to Mrs. Gooch to talk to me IRL if we ever meet? I bet we'd have a pretty great conversation, assuming you'd allow her to talk to me.

This is 100% true, she wears the pants...but it is only because I allow her to.

I bet Mrs Gooch gets real uncomfortable at the beginning of weddings when they say...

"who gives this woman to this man?"

"her mother and I"

Nope. Didn't ask either parent.

Leaving on my belated honeymoon a week from tomorrow.  All-In in Jamaica.  Purchased a pass that is supposed to get me through immigration super quick in Montego Bay.  If it saves me an hour, I will be super happy, but does anyone else know if it is worth a crap?  Called Club MoBay...
Let me know if this works. I've heard the wait is torture. Are you going to Ocho or Negril or Montego?

Ocho - immigration is pretty much the worst part of international travel so I'm hoping it's worth it. I'll keep you posted

we took a month break between wedding and honeymoon.   We felt so much more relaxed.    We'd have been so worn out if we went right after we wouldn't have enjoyed it as much.

The Club Mobay breezed me through immigration/customs but there wasn't a line anyways so didn't have much value for me.  Granted, I would pay for it again just in case as I hate customs/immigration and it seems like it would be much faster.

Bunch of misogynists ITT.
I talked to mom!

The notion that a woman is owned by her parents and therefore must get permission from them is antiquated and repressive no matter which parent you asked.
I guess I don't see it that way. It's more of a profession of undying love for a family member. I don't see it as permission being asked or that anyone is owned. Hey I love your sister with all of my heart and want to spend the rest of my life with her. I know she means a lot to you and thought you should know.

If people are really out there not proposing because of a random person's approval or not, they are foolish.
