a zoo?  i'm really not sure, since i'm not in the 1st grade.  i guess if i wanted to be around animals i could move to a jungle and build a tatch hut to live in.  but what's the point?  roar?  no thx.  some people need to grow up and accept the fact that the only zoo you need to know about is the one you call your own life.

they feed the polar bears at our zoo cantaloupes at the same time every day.  they bomb them down into the water and the bears dive in and get them.  not something they probably eat a lot of in the wild but they seem to enjoy them.

one time we were there when they were feeding the huge snakes which they said they don't do very often because they don't need to eat very much or something.  anyway, this monster snake ate a pig.  ridiculous to watch.  took it over an hour to eat it though.  we saw it get it and later when we came back it still had pig hooves sticking out of it's mouth.

one time the silverback gorilla was outside and we were watching it and all of a sudden out of nowhere it stood on it's two feet and started running towards us and pounded it's chest.  it's chest pounds were super loud.  mrs. dave jumped about a foot in the air.

Fantastic stories SD.  I have not visited a prison but probably would if a prisoner would eat a pig whole or a friend/family member was incarcerated there.

The Sedgwick County Zoo is surprisingly not crappy.  Favorite moments:  During a grade school trip a goat started nibbling on my t-shirt over in that petting zoo/farm-y area.  On my last trip there inside the Rain Forest a little round white bird thought my shoelace was a worm or snake.  That guy pecked non stop at my laces and even untied one of my shoes.

On second these anecdotes might indicate their animals are starving and desparate.     :sdeek:

The DC Zoo is pretty good. Great location. Very "jungly". But the monkey high-wire/zipline things that go all over it are very disappointing, as the monkeys do not seem to ever use them. Pandas more or less made up for it though.

The aquarium in Baltimore is just fantastic, though. Very strongly recommend:

Hippos.  Hippos are fantastic.  The zoo ppl in KC feed them while talking about them.  You end up with huge hippos eating huge tree branches about 3' from your face.  They look like  :sdeek: only cuter and w/ much larger mouths right before they bite the branches.

Fantastic.

Sedgwick Co Zoo is pretty great, for the kids.  My son has a ball every time and gets so worn out by the end.  He likes to tell me what each animal's name is.  Kids make going to the zoo so much more enjoyable.

My opinion (for what it's worth), zoos are great when the animals are well taken care of. :)

Going to the zoo should be a big deal, not just a casual thing.

I think Manhattan should have a zoo, only not with multiple exhibits. ALL animals should be put in just in one large exhibit. It would save space and your time for to having to  walk around to all the exhibits. A new concept for the zoo layout community to look into I believe.

It also does not take into account the animals born into captivity.  They didn't even have a choice in the matter cause thier parents were too stupid/weak to get away.  So I guess this means all zoo animals are dumb compared to animals in the wild.   :dunno:

who has ever underrated penguins? Everyone in the world loves them.
yeah, i've never met anyone who was lukewarm about penguins.

The penguin habitat at the St. Louis Zoo is the best thing I've ever seen at any zoo.  It is amazing.  Also the StL zoo has to be the best free zoo in the country.  Wish the rest of the city didn't blow so hard.

The last time I was at the St Louis zoo, they had a hairless albino chimp. It was terrifying.

About 5 or 6 yrs ago, all the penguins in the San Diego zoo(or somewhere like that) were supposed to have chlamydia(or someother STD). Obvsly a vote for penguins is a vote for VD.

I'm not saying their great, but you can feed them.  Not a whole lot of zoo animals that size that you can feed.  Big deal for a kid.  I would think they're average at worst.  I'm starting to think a Giraffe stole your girl or something.

I think that only major cities should have zoos. Or places with a enough land that are like preserves. I hate going to shitty zoos and seeing the animals in subpar habitats.

Going to the zoo should be a big deal, not just a casual thing.

I like the subpar habitats.  Its a zoo.  If animals want to run free they shouldn't get caught.  I like being able to get really close, like the tigers at the KC Zoo and hate when the animals are far away in their "natural type habitat", like the Gazelles at the KC Zoo

This is kind of mean.
It also does not take into account the animals born into captivity.  They didn't even have a choice in the matter cause thier parents were too stupid/weak to get away.  So I guess this means all zoo animals are dumb compared to animals in the wild.   :dunno:

I don't know.  Most of them are better off than in the wild anyway.  A tiger in a zoo is infinity times better off than a wild tiger.

Title: Re: Zoo

Expected it to be bigger for one thing.  everyone always told me how much time you need to see it.  We went for a half a day, then came back expecting to spend another half to full day(had been told it takes 2-3 days to see it all) and we were all "wow, we should have just stayed an hour longer yesterday then we could have gone and hit the children's museum".

Bears were cool and my kids liked sitting in the hippo statue mouth, but the aquarium was awesome.  The desert dome is just a bunch of rocks and crap.  The building is the most impressive thing about it.

Also, all the animal habitats were small.  When I see large animals in something the size of my back yard it makes me sad.

I think Manhattan should have a zoo, only not with multiple exhibits. ALL animals should be put in just in one large exhibit. It would save space and your time for to having to  walk around to all the exhibits. A new concept for the zoo layout community to look into I believe.
I wish I would have thought of this.

I too went to the Omaha zoo last summer. My favorite part was the Gorillas. We were looking at this one sitting on the ground, like in a crouched position, and then all of the sudden he jumped and smacked into the glass with all four feet and then bounded off. It startled me so much that I took a step back and almost fell over my kids stroller. And speaking of strollers never, ever try to push one around the Omaha zoo. So many hills.  Steep, steep hills. Need escalators or something.

start by going to the nocturnal and desert dome to your left as you enter because they get packed once the zoo gets busy later in the day and are awful when packed because you can't really walk around people. then head back to the right and hit the rainforest and aquarium. these are all on the top part so no hills yet. now you go down the hill to the let checking the nursery then gorillas and orangutans. hit the bears and cats on the bottom of the hill and then petting zoo and prairie dog village. pretty much have all the major stuff hit unless you want to check out monkey island or the elephants/rhinos but they just stand there and eat hay so I think they are pretty pud. anyway, at the bottom by the gorillas/cats there is a big ass elevator that will take you back to the top. no walking uphill with a stroller. boom, headshot.

the absolute worst part about the kc zoo is that it's sooooo spread out.  there's that huge "africa" area that has nothing running through it and no way to see 90% of it.  all of the animals just hang out in the middle and you can't even see them most of the time...and that's after you spend 30 minutes getting out there.  the polar bear(s) are the only thing great about it.  doesn't hold a candle to omaha.

Happy birthday!
