Just got back from Rome yesterday. I do a lot of business in Italy; mostly in Milan.

The food in the south is much better. They don't mess around, 3 course meals for lunch are common. If you want to go to Italy you have to go to Sicily. The weather and scenery is incredible and the food is the best i've had anywhere.

Rome is great because there is a lot to see. The coliseum and assorted ruins are cool and The Vatican is impressive.

Milan is much more of a Metropolitan city, with great public transport (good subway system). There are a number of historical buildings near the center such as Duomo. If you like skiing the Alps are only about 100 km away, which you can see from the city on a good day.

italian women can appear to blow you off even if they're interested because italian men are so damn hyper aggressive.  it's like a defense mechanism.  if they didn't act so cold, they would constantly be getting harrassed.  just let them know you're an american.  a lot of them love americans.

as for advice, you can't go wrong.  i'd hit rome, florence, venice.  you can't even try to see everything because there's too much.  see what you can see and enjoy.

maybe kougs will tell us how he liked his visit to the termini train station.

There is an old saying:  Don't go to Italy if you want to party with local girls while on vacation, instead go to France.

and chum1, the Italians are not drive-thru dining.  They require more.

Come and sit on uncle KK's lap lil' steve dave.  There was a before time, when your auntie Tortuga and I were not together.  It was in these years that I traveled to foreign lands with no direction home, no strings, great hair, a svelte figure and no cell phone of any kind.

Not directly. But I once dated an Afrikaaner. I'm guessing it's pretty much the same thing. Only, she was on the swim team, so maybe she was cleaner than a Dutch girl? Hard to say. Delightful accent, though. Also, I'm pretty sure I was "forbidden fruit" and whatnot while she was stateside, so she may not have been on normal Dutch/Afrikaaner behavior. So I suppose there's really very little I can take away from that.

have some dece (one great) tips for rome.

Can I hear them (it)?

Going to Spoleto/Umbria for a wedding a couple of weeks. Spending two or three days in Rome on the way in/out.

My list of must does is pretty small and consists of seeing the Carravagios at the Borghese Museum and doing the Spanish Steps.

I'm sure we'll see the Colosseum and Pantheon, etc. What else can't I miss?

We did Paris-Rome-San Gimignano-Florence-Venice.  All were amazing.  We stayed in Florence three days.  Could have spent less time there.  Only got two days/one night in Venice and wish we had more, but glad we squeezed it in.  Food was obviously incredible.

It seems no one eats breakfast, just coffee/cappuccino, then a ridiculous lunch with multiple courses, and then a ridiculous dinner around 8 or 9 that goes until midnight or later.  Lots of really good, cheap wine.

Thanks to all for the helpful info.

It is possible to do Rome in a day trip. Trains are fairly easy, don't believe anything people who are just "trying to help you" say at the train station. Burano was awesome, so was Florence, and Milan. Orvieto was probably my favorite place there. If you get a chance to check it out the country side in northeast italy is incredible. Lugano was also pretty cool.
