Title: Favorite Aggiville Bar thread
Post by: pike on February 25, 2010, 10:36:21 PM
I'd have to say Pat's just cause me and many of my friends used to/still do work there so we always go there.

Other bars that are dece IMO:

Tubbys - Really like hanging out on the patio when its nice out. Lots of sluts.
The Lou - A staple
Fats - Like the smallness. Good crap show bar
Salty - Good place to stop by
Ale House - Although they only have one ale it's not bad. I never remember anything when I go there. Lots of sluts also.
Shot Stop - Love the cheap bottles. Don't care for the horrible shots they have on the "menu"
Auntie Maes - Weird crowd, but really cool bar. It's like hanging out with emos and poets

Bars that I think suck/usually don't go to
Kites - Way too busy and impossible to get a drink. Music too loud and the dance floor is right in the f*cking way :cyclist:
O'malleys - Smells bad plus don't know anyone that goes there.
Drinkx (the new bar) - Supposed to be a 'rock bar' like at P&L but not even close
Rustys - Hard to get a drink plus too many Riley rats. Will meet up with my hick friends from class there sometimes at next door or whatever
So Long - Would be a good bar but way too small. Great food though

This is all IMHO

Fan of the Pig. Not too terribly crowded, and many times I get free or cheap drinks because a few of my friends know the owner.

A lot's changed in nearly a decade.

Next Door and Pat's were personal favs when I was in school.  Safari Jack's, Tula's, and Mae's also got my business.

The Pig was located across from the Houston Street Ballroom, back then.

Ever had their basket of bacon (B.O.B.)?

Coming back for Fake Patty's day and might have to give myself a couple clogged arteries with one of those.

Went to Mae's occasionally, too many weird frackers.  Would go get a tarantula every once in a while.  Always afraid of a fire breaking out and burning to death down there.

O'malleys: Loved everything about it. When it started to smell too much like vomit they'd just hose that rough rider out and it would be good as new.

Maes:  I've never understood why people don't like it.  It always made me happy though 'cause 99% of the people that don't like Maes are the type of people I would never wanna hang out with anyways.

Pats: Excellent in the afternoons, esp summer afternoons. They were the only place that had Stella on tap and their afternoon specials were always great.  Dg then Pats was basically an everyday occurrence one summer.

Maes when out without the wife(then GF). For some reason, it felt like a warm blanket. Also loved playing pool there. Seemed more laid back than the other joints

Next Door and O'maley's when with the wife.

I hit Pats pretty hard the last year too. Don't really know why.

yeah. kj's was more than pretty bad. remember the boxing ring they had? i only went into kj's twice. got kicked out both times. door guys apparently didn't like five-six guys doing professional wrestling moves (pile drivers, figure four leg locks. throwing each other up against the ropes, etc) inside of that thing.

2 years.  The 4 Safari Jacks people bought it from Bob from Luckys.  One sold their interest to the rest and it turned into Gilligans for a year.  Then one sold their interest to the final two and it was Aggie Station for 2 years until it burned down.

My best band in a bar experience was Shaking Tree in Maes.  They did a few really good covers...DMB, Flaming Lips, etc.  Not bad, but not Vanilla Ice at the Wharem(sp).

Point of correction.  It wasn't actually Bombers that burned.  Bombers closed.  It became Club Carrington for a week or two before getting shut down for too many MIP's.  The next weekend it coincidentally burned down.

Always joke with my brother-in-law that he burned it down.  He was the night manager at the place next door that burned with the bar. (pizza place, I think).  He was the last one out of the building that night.  He says he usually took the night deposit with him, but forgot once he had locked the door he didn't want to go back in.  The cash fried.  He told me he wished that he would have grabbed it and kept it. Then they could have claimed that it burned in the insurance claim.

i lived in the 1100 block of vattier during that fire. you could see flames from the back bedroom window. i walked over and watched that m'fer burn.

Pizza place was Greek's.  It was my fav my Frosh year.

I will also go on record with KJs being awesome for what it was.  It was great at being what it was.  There will never be a bar in aggieville that can replicate that (because of laws and stuff).
Curious as I have no idea what KJ's was, but what laws would it violate now?

You could be 15 and get in and drink all night for pocket change.  It was a terrible place, unless you were 15 of course.

O'Malley's.

Least fave: Porter's. It's a frickin' hallway.

O'Malley's was a great bar for those nights when you are in the mood to go somewhere it is completely acceptable to drop your pants and take a piss while standing at the bar getting a drink.  Saw this happen one night and was blown away.  Funny watching everyone walk through the puddle the rest of the night assuming it was just beer.

Anyone remember Aggieville Pizza (I think that is what it was called).  Terrible, terrible pizza.  Cheap as hell, but still not worth it.

Shady types were always hanging out in back doing presumed drug deals.  That was pretty entertaining I guess.

Of course the king of pizza in Aggieville was Pyramid.  It burned down too.

Pyramid is delicious.

It's definitely the late-night food I opt for whenever in Lawrence. GTFOOMF, Burrito King.

Now the crap pizza/cheap pizza king is Gumby's.  Place was horrible.  I even hated it when drunk.  But, how do you beat a Big Ass pizza for $7?  You don't.  Even if it tastes like undercooked, vomit-coated cardboard, you don't.

In terms of disgusting food after closing down the bars, there is no way to beat Hunan.

What was even better was getting it for free.

On Saturday and Sunday mornings, you'd go dumpster diving for the unclipped Gumby's coupons on the boxes.  Cut ten of them, call it good, and you'd have free pizza that night.

It was an unbeatable system.

Apparently the places you frequent have a high ratio of homosexuals?  :dunno:
I guess its a pattern. Generally though twice is considered a coincidence, but your point has been made.

Bars that are friendly to homosexuals are more often than not the best bars.  Assholes and homosexuals are like oil and water, prob cuz most assholes are closet gay dudes.

this make you uncomfortable?  well you're prob an bad person.

wanna keep assholes away?  let a few gaydudes run around, its like a citronella candle to bugs.   works like a charm.

plus chicks hang around gay dudes, but gay dudes dont try to eff em, and since assholes dont hang around gay dudes, means there is a better chick to straight dude ratio where the gays are a roaming.

Dude, no one cares if you're gay or not, so this closet job you're pulling is totally unnecessary.

Sorry Pike.

Best Bars in Aggieville.

Currently wouldn't know for the college age crowd.

For the older crowd def. Kathouse, Auntie Mae's, RAB, Bolos  also not in Aggieville but Finn's is always a good place for a brew, as well as Mel's during their karaoke.

Pretty long thread for no "Rowdy Trouty's" being listed.

pffft. i'll pass on listening to jeff barrett sing about pillsbury crossing or whatever the shazbot! he used to sing about. troutys?  :flush:

Jeff Barret was soooooo rough ridin' dreamy.  On the $0.25 Tuesday draw night, he would serenade us with his silky smooth James Taylor knock offs.

Also $3.50 you-call-it schooners.  (32oz!)  Nothing like knocking back enough tanqueray and tonics to kill an elephant while listening to Barrett doing "Piano Man."
