He would put Fitz to shame on creeper level.
Once saw him turn the lights out in the class and turn on a black light right on a girl in a white shirt.......among other things
-
Y-LA. Check your PMs.
But yeah, anyone who has had this guy is not likely to be surprised at this news. Watching this video was like stepping into a goddamn time machine.
-
That's it?

That's it?
i'm sure that parents, principals, and the school board will share your sentiment. clear skies ahead for dean stramel.

Sad day to be an Ihndd.
-
the dude has always been weird, but he did nothing in that vid.
i rough ridin' hate every student in that video.

The kid who filmed it should have had his phone chucked into a wall.
Teens these days deserve to be slapped around by teachers. It's really become a "Im going to provoke you until you lose your crap" era with cameras sprinkled on top.
Teachers are fighting a losing battle.
-
he did do something. right or wrong, his behavior could get him suspended or fired. there's no disputing that.

question: did you blow that $40K you won gambling online, go into debt while trying to get it back, and are consequently now trying to bulk up so that it won't hurt so much when you get your ass kicked by your loan shark's goons? sorry if repost.

sounds like this belongs in the claim to fame thread

Meh, it's been that way for a long time if not always. Teenagers are shitheads. I was in the guy's class 13 years ago or so and it was exactly the same as it was in this video. The only thing that has changed are cell phones. It's a crappy situation (situ-injun?) all around. The kids are assholes, yeah, but as a teacher you just cannot do that, especially now when cameras are everywhere. Sounds like everyone involved needs to get sent to ISS, amirite?
-
Whatever. The teacher is employed by the state, is supposed to keep order in the classroom, and be a mature role model. He wasn't. The teacher was being a psycho and the kid saw it as an opportunity to bust that insane bad person. Kudos to the kid for seizing the opportunity.
Don't really see how anyone could blame the 16 year old kids.
However, I'd love to see the teacher post here. :emawkid:
-
Yeah, the problem is the jackass teacher, not the kids. Because, they're...uhhhh....kids and he's an adult.
Only losers blame society and kids for situations like this.

Make no mistake about it, I've been in that school as an adult and their are more and more worthless little pieces of crap running around, but agree with most of you that if your going to be a teacher and you can't keep it together it's time to look for another job. Teens have been pieces of crap for years and I think admin needs to take stronger action against them when they act out but you just can't flip out...
-
No way the teacher gets fired or suspended for that. Much more likely that the kid who filmed it will be expelled. I'm not familiar with the written policies, but I'll almost guarantee that kid gets the max. Wouldn't surprise me if it's the rest of the year.
Teachers' unions have power. Maybe you people haven't been following the current events in this country.
-
Last time a Engine teacher was in the news was for getting caught having sexy time w/ a student :emawkid:
-
No way the teacher gets fired or suspended for that.
this is the type of situation where public outcry can force the school's hand. i think they'll be compelled to do something. we'll see.

Just watched it again. Not only do I think this teacher won't be disciplined, I think he might become a cult hero among teachers for this. He's railing on a class for failing and for insubordination and in response, they're all laughing at him. He also complains about the class being overcrowded.
Politicians want to judge teachers on how well their students achieve. This video does a fantastic job of showing the challenges that teachers have in meeting that goal.
FYI, I am not a teacher.

He spit on a 16 year old student, and when she complained, he kicked her out of the classroom.
-
Not to mention that he announced her (failing) grade to the class, which you absolutely cannot do.

I assumed he was responding to her complaint that he was spitting on her when he was yelling at her before the video started. That was vague.

sounds like this dude touched some posters inappropriately once or twice back in the day.
-
Not to mention that he announced her (failing) grade to the class, which you absolutely cannot do.
Like I said, I'm not a teacher. Sounded to me like she deserved a smack in the face which he obviously didn't give her. That's why I'm not a teacher.

"I'm spitting on you because I'm pissed," is all anyone needs to hear. That is a 15/16 year old girl and he is a teacher. Indefensible.

I enjoyed Earth Science class in 9th grade and 13 years later I can still name all 5 circumpolar constellations, muthafuckas! :fistpump:
Mr. Stramel taught a lot and obviously cares about science, but the dude has ALLLLWAYS been a loose cannon like this. I mean, in 1997 a classmate made a website on g-d ANGELFIRE quoting all of his classroom blowups; he's lucky his career is reaching its twilight stages just as video phones are popping up. Had he gone into teaching 25 years later I think he probz wouldn't have lasted very long. Again, this is ugly for both sides. But the ugliest part is definitely that girl's hair in front of the camera.
-
Sounded to me like she deserved a smack in the face which he obviously didn't give her. That's why I'm not a teacher.
That is one mumped up philosophy. I mean seriously, you are mumped up.

I may have gotten a little carried away. :embarrassed:
And I'm not saying I would have smacked her, but that whole situation would have ruined my day and my week and would make me want to quit teaching.
He should have taken her out into the hall.

not really helping his case.

Just found out Stramel was 3 months away from retirement. Does this change your course of action if you're an administrator?
-
Guy is an a-hole, but the degradation of discipline/respect/society as a whole is bound to drive high school teachers to these kinds of behaviors.

This.
But the video was a good illustration why corporal punishment should still be allowed. Just because it's a little archaic doesn't mean it's not effective. Obviously the kids in that video have no respect for authority. I was always terrified of getting in trouble at school because I knew there would be consequences at home. A number of kids in that class (seems like a room full of troublemakers/flunkies) probably don't have anybody at home that gives a crap about their education or behavior. And trips to the principal's office don't bother these kids in the least. So while rusty would paint me as a monster for suggesting that kids get swatted, I think it would be effective. Long story short the guy should not have gone off like that but those kids are clearly a mess. After 30 years of putting up with that kind of crap, I would be ready to pop a beer and deploy the slide as well.

I think they just have a shitty jackass of a teacher. :dunno:
-
Man. From all the comments I've read on this and various other sites, I'd say it's pretty evenly divided at 50/50.
BY THE WAY! Do any of you former Stramelites remember Jack Horkheimer videos?? THE STARGAZER!
-
I think they have a shitty teacher too, totally agree. Benny what does this guy teach anyways? It seems like that particular class was only for the kids that suck at school and probably smoke cigarettes.
btw I'm not trying to come off as high and mighty. I gave my respect to teachers that I thought deserved it and was also a little bastard to others. I would not want to be a teacher. Kids are mean and crazed wolf jackals that relish getting under people's skin. I would :chainsaw: if I taught HS/MS kids. Once they get to the point where they are old enough to make real smartass remarks it's all over.

But it's not allowed and for good reason. The guy should get canned.

I'd be shocked if he got canned seeing as he's 3 month's from retirement.
And I'd be lying if I said that I haven't seen conduct much more inappropriate than this in high school.
-

Even if that were true, you went to a private high school. Different set of rules.

Pretty sure threatening to give someone an enema is a no-no in any school. Granted, I didn't give a crap because the teacher was awesome, I'm just sayin.
-
I've got nothing more to add, but please keep us updated on what happens to the kid that filmed this and put it on youtube. I'm far more worried about his future.
And I'd bet there's a 99.9% chance that he is either reading this thread or has already responded in it.

For practical reasons, it is so difficult to draw a line - it is much simpler just to not allow an adult teacher to physically strike a child. I don't know what you're saying would have been appropriate here..A spanking? Maybe a smack in the mouth like Ira suggested? Closed fists? Why would one OK and not the others?
For moral reasons, perhaps because we should protect the rights of our youth? If you think that makes me a bleeding heart, you are a complete jackass, and I really don't give a crap.
-
isn't assault always assault just as rape is always rape? i don't know. i'm not a teacher or a legal expert.
-
I already backed off my smack in the mouth comment. Nobody deserves to get hit. Can't even be sure from the video if she deserves to be expelled. She probably should have shut up and not said anything.
But am I wrong to be worried for this kid who shot the video and put it on youtube?
-
But am I wrong to be worried for this kid who shot the video and put it on youtube?
No, but it's probably not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Worry about starving people that can't afford cell phones that take video or something.
-
Kids behave the way they are allowed to behave for the most part. This is just another example.
-

No, but it's probably not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Worry about starving people that can't afford cell phones that take video or something.
You're right. I'm over-reacting. Worst case, the kid can get his GED and move on. It's not like anybody in that class was headed to Harvard.
It all worked out for Ryan Lilja.

What would they kick him out of school for? Shooting a video of a teacher acting like a dumbass and then posting it on the internet? Seems pretty mild in the grand scheme of things.

Most everything is pretty mild in the grand scheme of things. Losses to Colorado are mild. Stealing things from Dillard's is mild. Getting caught smoking dope three times is very mild.

kids probably a hero, wouldn't be surprised if they just give him A's for the rest of the semester.

I agree it's difficult to draw the line. Firsthand experience (parents) suggests that in Kansas the way corporal punishment was set up was very transparent and welcomed accountability. This was at the end of that era, so it was fairly advanced and already under scrutiny. The way I understand it, teachers can't get control of the kid requiring discipline, so they were legally obligated to go to the principal, who would witness and require a teacher of the same sex to do the swatting.
That seems like a reasonable procedure. Believe me, I DO GET the concept that punishment should be up to the discretion of the parents. But at some point, you have to realize that it only takes one kid to incite the group and the teacher will lose control of the class for years. There is no punishment at school or at home that these kids recognize as sufficient enough to quell their behavior and if there is one tool that teachers and administrators can use to stem students' misbehavior, and it happens to be swatting, then so be it.
And the "moral rights of our youth"...? Until they are LEGALLY considered adults and free to do whatever the hell they want (considering consequences), it is the job of the adults around them to guide them into appropriate social behavior. If you would not advocate that a 15 year old should have full legal authority to act as an adult then you would not advocate they are allowed to act however they please within the social conventions we have set up for them.
-

I don't think he was literally spitting on her. He was yelling and spit was flying out. Big difference.
I think he went overboard, cursing, and generally being crazy but the kids are def. unruly. These type of problems can be solved by demanding respect from day one. These kids obviously don't respect him, I'm sure there are many teachers that would have this class up-right and at full attention from word go.

If we beat Nebraska on Wednesday, maybe Frank could spare a day and be a sub in this guy's class on Thursday. :ck: :horrorsurprise: :horrorsurprise:

Frank spews out more cuss words and spittle in his annual address to the Rotary Club than that guy did in the video.

Name anything else that might be more effective. It is about pain (slight) and humiliation. You are right in that maybe those kids don't gaf. Kind of like how we have prison which is an awful punishment but does not seem to be a great deterrent.

This I wont give ground on. Are we expected to just let juveniles (who dont know any better) just run amok? I mean, school is supposed to be a controlled environment. If some punk kid came up to you on the street and peed on you and laughed, you are suggesting they should get a free pass because of these mysterious "kids rights" that you speak of? No.
The teacher is a dumbass and is wrong for what he did by losing his cool. But to suggest that his behavior was totally out of the blue and not understandable is false.

Peed on me? WTF? Who gets peed on?
Still, I probably wouldn't hit a kid for that if that's what you mean by "free pass". and by "kids rights" I pretty much mean "human rights".

When I was in KG in Oklahoma they still used paddles, and a strong majority of the time, just the threat of getting it down off of the wall worked. I think with regulation and procedure it would still be best to have it as an option. Currently, teachers have no disciplinary measures that mean one damn thing. There's no recess or free time to take, you can call parents (if they give a crap) or control grades (if they give a crap) but if they don't wtf do you do then?
-
i normally hate when people go into the whole "how it used to be" argument but this is actually one area i agree with.

Wow. I don't think that is even a foul in the Big XII. And they're going to fire the guy?

These type of problems can be solved by demanding respect from day one. These kids obviously don't respect him, I'm sure there are many teachers that would have this class up-right and at full attention from word go.

Why wouldn't I be serious. In high school, and all school in general there have always been teachers that you knew you could get away with certain stuff, and teachers that you knew not to eff with. Maybe, this was a class of degens who were all lumped into the same classroom specifically set aside for underachievers and future failures. If the that is the case then the teacher's only fault, other than lack of emotional control is perhaps caring to much about lost causes anyway.
An instructor either owns a class or the class owns them.
Addressing the camera. The first thing I would do is demand that my students turn-off their phones, or place them in a designated area. If they refused to comply they would be docked significant amounts of points on their final grades. I went back to school and the prevalence of phones in the classroom is really disrespectful to the instructor.
-
Just watched it again.
He spit on her because he was screaming.
This.
But the video was a good illustration why corporal punishment should still be allowed.
But it's not allowed and for good reason. The guy should get canned.
Enlighten us?

OK, what are you going to do when the parents call to ask why Johnny's grade was docked? Of course you'll explain it to them and the parent won't like it so they'll complain to an administrator who will then change the grade back (at least at MHS).
I'm friends with a couple MHS teachers. They receive almost no support from administrators in the cell phone department. One even went as far as to confiscate a phone, iPod etc if he saw them out in class. He did that three times before the kids learned to go straight to one of the principals. Principal would come to the room, get the phone and give it back to the kid.
Also, good luck getting the parents to sign on to such policies when they're more often than not the ones sending texts to kids when they're in class.
Again, this is a situation that varies by district, but the administrators' support of teachers at MHS does nothing but undermine the good ones who would try to control a classroom.

Perhaps a better way of handling unruly students.

Then that is a problem with the administration. One would like to believe that the majority of instructors, administrators, and parents would agree that the classroom is a place for learning and that any distractions should be removed from the classroom until they cease to be a distraction. I didn't go to MHS, but I would say that if the situation that you describe is accurate that the whole educational system there is in dire need of repair. The classroom should be the instructors dictatorship as long as he/she operates within rational boundries.

The SRO needed to come in and start busting little snotnosed brat heads.
I'd laugh.
-
There are schools that treat that type of student behavior as a misdemeanor and kids can be ticketed by the admin.

Really? Do you not foresee any possible detrimental consequences stemming from giving hundreds of thousands of adults the right to use corporal punishment on children?

What's funny is how everyone thinks there's always one culprit responsible for bringing down the entire educational system.
"It's the unions! Get rid of those and everything will be fixed!"
or
"It's the kids of today! Teach them some manners and everything will be fixed!"
or
"It's the parents! Teach them to discipline better and everything will be fixed!"
or
"We need corporal punishment! Instill fear and everything will be fixed!"
or
"It's the teachers! Hold them more accountable and everything will be fixed!"
or
"It's the administrators! If they get tougher then everything will be fixed!"
It's also amusing to me that n00bs think that all schools of every demographic and geographic region are all the same.

(so don't do that, is what I'm saying.)

I've got to completely disagree with Michigan's over zealous reaction to this incident. I'm sure I'll be called a name but screw it.
There are two issues at play here. The first is the teachers actions in todays world. What he did was wrong, I don't think he did anything over the top but he didn't stay in control and thats exactly what the students want to do is get him going. Stop saying the guy spit on her like is was battery. He was yelling and like most of us spit came out of his mouth and the little girl told him to stop. This is where he just didn't stay in control and that is flat wrong.
The second issue is the thought process by many that we should be defending kids like they are a 6 week old puppy that just pissed on the rug. "They are kids, kids will be kids" this is bullshit. These "kids" are young adults that know exactly what they are doing. I've worked in the law and outside of the law and we have let the inmates run the asylum. Public education needs to be treated as a priviledge and not a right.
I have two small children at home and work every single day to teach them respect for others. I can assure you that if either of my kids talked back to me, a teacher, or another adult like these kids do they'd recieve an ass whipping and I wouldn't apologize for it at all. Todays parents with all their bitching about life needing to be fair, and overprotective bullshit has ruined a generation of kids. I have tried to hire countless teens and 20 somethings and to find one worth keeping is definately rare. They are spoiled brats who think they are owed something by society because thats what they have been taught.

I should smack the crap out of your stupid kids. Just for being ungrateful little bastards.

I've learned everything I need to know about kids in today's high schools from MTV's "Skins".

Wow what a well crafted response.
I'm a little worried......
1. Unable to respect any other option.
2. Unable to make a cognative argument.
3. Unable to respond without name calling or useless threats.
All the talents and prized attributes of a jayhawk. I've included a couple places where you might be more comfortable. Best of luck

I respect your opinion, and I agree that your kids should get the ass-beatings they deserve (hopefully with closed fists :crossfingers:). I could have made my point without calling them stupid ungrateful little bastards, but added the name-calling for dramatic affect.

Was really hoping this thread was about the women who mumped her student a few years back.
Really disappointed. :dubious:

It's the teachers, parents and administrators and sometimes politicians. Kids haven't changed in decades.
-
Cell phones and technology have, without question, changed kids. One, nobody reads anymore. Two, spelling has become atrocious. Three, attention spans are nil. Technology can certainly be used productively in the classroom, but when a kid glances at her phone every two seconds and surreptitiously sends a text, it's distracting. Ask anybody who has been a teacher for a few decades what the biggest change has been in students, and they're likely to tell you cell phones have changed the game bigtime, and usually not for the better.
*edit* OMFG I just reread that and totally feel :cyclist:
-
Then teachers need to change and adapt the way that they teach.
Of course that would include integrating more technology which costs money and that's not going to happen. So teachers are pretty much effed.
Just wait until 2014 when half the nation's schools get shut down.

The students say Stramel has been suspended and that he intended to retire after this school year. They also say the student who recorded the video has also been suspended. When Dean Stramel was contacted, he had no comment. He just spit.
