kansas state
chris klieman
this is a bond that has been forged in college football history
gene "the mustang" taylor is going to hire klieman again, as he did when he was the ad at ndsu when craig bohl left ndsu for wyoming in 2014. taylor can point to klieman's 66-6 (yikes, the devil!) coaching record and natty champy trophs and tell everyone that his guy is a winner. he knows klieman. it's the easy path to take. why make things harder than they need to be.
i'm sure that klieman, gene, and both the snyders, will get along just great as they build the future of k-state football.
we're k-state. be happy with what we're given.
-
Another epic goEMAW scoop! Nice work!
-
Before he forced out Bill I'd have expected this, but I think Gene has more balls than we thought.
-
#wildKatsforklieman :ksu: (ftp://:ksu:)
-
I don't even know how to pronounce that name. Klieman. Is it missing a letter or something?
-
He's incredibly unattractive.
-
Can someone photoshop Coach Kleiman's hat and jacket in the pic below so that they are Royal purple? That would be awesome!

-
i hope Klieman is better at k-state than Bohl is at wyoming! :crossfingers:
welcome Chris!
-
Holy crap! This non-denial is exactly what he would say if he had accepted an offer.

Telling his kids about the importance of focusing on Colgate. That’s our guy. #FAMILY #strongteeth
-
serious question, has there ever been an FCS coach to make the leap to P5 and have any real success?
also, his salary at NDSU is apparently a paltry 300k. had no idea the gulf was so wide...
-
There are some good examples out there, but this guy doesn’t strike me as a future success story.

:flush:

Yes. Why do people keep asking this?
-
examples?
all i could find was Harbaugh going from university of san diego straight to stanford. every other example i've seen worked their way up through a "group of 5" type FBS school.

Jim Tressel, line one.

klieman hasn't had any contact with gene taylor but i'm sure that his handlers have

Tressel and Harbaugh. Big differences in the situations though - they were relatively local to the schools they took over. If Kliemann were doing what he's doing in Oklahoma or Texas he'd be way more intriguing.
-
ok, Harbaugh, Tressel, any others? i'm not necessarily doubtful, just genuinely curious because no others spring to mind.
Since 2004, 18 FCS, Division II or high school head coaches have been hired as the head coach of an FBS program. At their previous stop, those coaches compiled a combined record of 744-347, with a winning percentage of .682.
Promising resumes, however, have not always yielded continued success at a higher plateau. At their first -- and sometimes only -- FBS head coaching stop, that combined record dipped to 225-375 (.375).
keep in mind this is referring to all FCS to FBS hires, not just P5. also, this quote is from 2014, so there may have been some success stories since then, but still...
-
blackcats, would you say that klinemann will be more of a figurehead type coach with sean running the show behind the scenes? or more of a puppet/puppetmaster type relationship?
-
my sources say Klieman is still in play............. I would be cool, but super worried about his recruiting pipeline......also, not sexy.
-
:bang: :bang: :bang:
Here we go again with a guy and his big binder!!

One of the specific things I heard when Gene was hired was that he wouldn’t hire either of the coaches he hired at North Dakota State. In his words, they were very good fits in Nort h Dakota but he didn’t see their abilities translating to a place like Kansas State. We’ve seen Gen’s judgment proven correct at Wyoming. Unless something has changed drastically, we can shut this thread down. I surprisingly trust Gene to find the right fit for KState.
-
I mean he had the stones to CAN Bill's ass, so I think maybe I underestimated him.
-
I hope you're right blackcats

This is about the worst I can imagine us doing. I'd probably prefer les miles and I don't want him at all

Who is Pete predicting? CK or SL?
-
AD Taylor has to know that everyone looking would see this as such the safe and easy hire, to appear he made no effort on part of the school. Since we already know that 7-8 people are being vetted, someone would have to share with the media that they were approached, but not interested in the position for it to go to Klieman.
-
CK would be the KSU (rich man’s) version of Beatty. Cost saving approach while we wait for a better candidate.
-
Has Mangino done a preemptive turn down?

of course he said that. what else was he going to do, tell the truth?
what has gene taylor done at kansas state that has shown you he has the propensity to do anything beyond nothing at all? hiring klieman would allow him to do nothing at all.
-
Taylor fired Hill and replace him with a competent coach. He supported Weber when dudes wanted him canned. And he canned :billdance:. I'd say he's done well. And that's from Arkansas.

welcome home, chris
-
After having a YEAR, or more, to prepare for this, if ADGT lands back at CK.....that'd be shockingly disappointing.
That sort of hire would inject the sort of excitement and optimism that a Sean Snyder hiring would do. Minus the recruiting network in TX / OK.

I really don’t like how much NDSU fans seem to want us to take him.
-
The only mistake you fruit loops made was not making this move 5 years ago after you got your asses kicked.
Being a carbon copy of NDSU is the best thing to ever happen to you since we're better at basically everything than you are with less resources
If this goes through, your program will get the injection it badly needs since youve been irrelevant for all but one year.
What a home run hire by the mustang. Loved the dubbed nickname for mean gene! Thats one thing youve done right
-
^^^ Lollypop gets it.
NDSU is better than K State, so you got our AD, our womens track coach and now Klieman.
you should be thankful. PudHattan

Only dude I don't want.

North Dakota State University - Manhattan annex?
North Dakota State University in Manhattan (NDSUIM) ?

Rolls off the tongue. Fargo is getting a double lane roundabout like Manhattan has by the Walgreens. This is getting eerie how much we're similar and i dont like it.
-
If we hire this guy, with the NDSU fans stop being mean to us?
-
Taytay hiring this nobody is more embarrassing than when jack waters lost to ndsu.
I watched a total of maybe 8 quarters this year, I think I'm done with cat football for good.
-
winning wouldn't even be worth it if this guy's face is the face of the program. he looks north dakota as eff

Even more embarrassing than the free fireworks show you gave us for the victory?

Oh Ok. NDSU fans like us will be nice to you.
hell Kansas State might actually gain a ton more fans if this deal gets done!

Chris Klieman's Assistant Choices:

Don't you like WINNING?
NDSU , me and Lollypop are 110-8 in last 7 years. Its what we do.
So WHEN you sign Klieman, You will be a bigger winner than you've ever been. its a system, its a process, its hard nosed football for tough guys, not a bunch of snowflakes like the rest of the Big 12.

craig bohl's version of hard-nosed football for tough guys produced 14 pts vs boise (loss), 13 pts vs hawaii (loss), 3 pts vs fresno (loss), and 16 pts vs utah st (loss).
hard-nosed football for tough guys has finished 97th, 104th, 33rd, 119th and 104th in total offense (adjusted stats) in five years, and has produced some of the most boring, god-awful, unwatchable games that i've ever seen.
hard-nosed football for tough guys gets you an invitation to the potato bowl.
seriously, gross! :Yuck:

You rough ridin' certainly should if you're a K-State fan wondering how the jump to FBS is going to go for the current NDSU head coach. It's as close to a parallel as you'll find. I swear to God I will give up KSU football altogether if we hire that Hills Have Eyes looking mother rough rider you guys have passed off as a human being football coach.

Nobody will give a crap because you're a loser whos used to losing. Probably at everything in life.
CK has ndsu as a top 25 program with 20 less scholarships. Even the wizard couldn't pull that off.

"hey mom, can you turn the tv down, i'm on the phone with kyle klieman"
"who is that?"
"the old north dakota coach! he wants me to play for him!"
"north dakota? i'm not sending you there!"
"no, he coaches at kansas state now"
"the jayhawks?"
"i think so"
"coach, you're with kansas or kansas state?"
"kansas state, and by the way, it's chris"
"oh, sorry chris, so tell me about yourself"
"well i was at north dakota state, not north dakota"
"oops, sorry, so you built that program?"
"well, not exactly, i inherited it from craig bohl who went 43-1 with three national championships the three years before i took over"
"oh, so you were the genius top assistant?"
"not really. so the first year we won the title, i was just the defensive backs coach. but then the next two years i was the defensive coordinator!"
"so you were the defensive mastermind of those teams?"
"well, again no. coach bohl played defense and has coached defense his whole life, so that side of the ball is actually his area of expertise. he gave me the coordinator title to help boost my resume."
"so tell me more about coach bohl, i take it he's having massive success elsewhere?"
"yeah, he's doing alright for himself. he's 28-35 at wyoming, almost .500 in conference, has produced one good offense in five years and won the potato bowl! some fans want him fired..."
"they do?"
"yeah - but they're a vocal minority."
"great to hear! so i'm assuming you have your own style?"
"umm, not exactly. i basically just do what bohl did."
"so what did he do?"
"well, he tries to slow the game down to a crawl. we snap it every 30 seconds. we play field position. we run the ball. power football. we use modern concepts like the play-action pass."
"to have the success you had, you must bring in some awesome recruits!"
"we've had a few good players, sure. but we don't put much emphasis on that. we're big on player development."
"so you just get athletic freaks and then you tr--"
"no, we look for character first. without that, you can't build a family."
"so quick question, if bohl taught you what you know, and he's not even doing that well at wyoming, then what makes you think you'll be able to compete in the big 12?"
"good question! haven't thought about that"
"has gene taylor?"
"probably not, but he only hired me because i came cheap."

Kleiman will have a worse record then Prince had in 3 years if he is hired. THIS IS AN UNACCEPTABLE HIRE for a POWER 5 Conference school!!!!!!
If he is only the head and we are keeping the current assistants then why force Snyder out. ADGT can still salvage this...he better or he will be out of a job this time next year!

klieman's 2016 team was basically his worst. it was still good enough to beat iowa on the road as a 14.5-pt underdog.
his first game as coach, in 2014, he took on iowa state. ndsu was a 6-pt underdog and won by 20 pts.
his current team is a top-25 level team. ndsu would be roughly a pick 'em if they played syracuse today on a neutral field. they'd be small underdogs (2-3 pts) vs teams like oregon or michigan state. they'd be a 10-pt favorite over this year's k-state team.
here's how klieman's current team would stack up vs the rest of the big 12 (all lines assume neutral field)
ndsu -10 vs k-state
ndsu -3 vs iowa state
ndsu -3.5 vs tcu
ndsu -4.5 vs texas tech
ndsu -17 vs kansas
ndsu -9 vs baylor
ndsu +1 vs texas
ndsu pk vs okla st
ndsu +8 vs wvu
ndsu +13 vs okla
and klieman has had better teams than this one.
so really, you can't knock anything about his coaching, his program, or his results. he's done everything you can possibly do. he's been at it for 25 years, at different stops, performing different roles, including as head coach now where he is leading a dominant team.
his wikipedia resume shows that he was a DB's coach for five years at UNI; that's not even accurate. he was the assistant head coach his first two years, was co-defensive coordinator his third year, and was the full-time defensive coordinator his last two years.
the year he was co-defensive coordinator, he shared the role with ... scott frost.
klieman was the one who called the plays on gameday, not frost.

Sold
-
Not sold. But if mustang hires CK, I will need jrake to make like 10 more posts like this that I can print out and read every night to stave off crippling depression.
-
i dug through a bunch of old articles looking for negative-sounding klieman stuff so i could make fun of him, but honestly didn't come up with much. he's far more intriguing than norvell or brown or any similar type guys imo.
two things give me pause though:
-when bohl left for wyoming, it wasn't the super no brainer to give the job to klieman that you would like for it to be. gene didn't look anywhere else in fairness, and klieman was his first and only target. but gene felt the need to interview him to 'feel him out.' gene's account of their meeting was essentially: "i went in feeling good about chris, and after our three-hour meeting, i felt even better." idk, it's nothing alarming but you would like a more full throated endorsement than that.
-if klieman is so obviously good, why was LittreLL gene's apparent top choice, and not klieman?
if snyder retired and gene instantly zeroed in on klieman, liked him so much he wouldn't even waste his time looking elsewhere, i'd view him more favorably. but the reporting we've seen so far indicates that hasn't been the case.

klieman's 2016 team was basically his worst. it was still good enough to beat iowa on the road as a 14.5-pt underdog.
his first game as coach, in 2014, he took on iowa state. ndsu was a 6-pt underdog and won by 20 pts.
his current team is a top-25 level team. ndsu would be roughly a pick 'em if they played syracuse today on a neutral field. they'd be small underdogs (2-3 pts) vs teams like oregon or michigan state. they'd be a 10-pt favorite over this year's k-state team.
here's how klieman's current team would stack up vs the rest of the big 12 (all lines assume neutral field)
ndsu -10 vs k-state
ndsu -3 vs iowa state
ndsu -3.5 vs tcu
ndsu -4.5 vs texas tech
ndsu -17 vs kansas
ndsu -9 vs baylor
ndsu +1 vs texas
ndsu pk vs okla st
ndsu +8 vs wvu
ndsu +13 vs okla
and klieman has had better teams than this one.
so really, you can't knock anything about his coaching, his program, or his results. he's done everything you can possibly do. he's been at it for 25 years, at different stops, performing different roles, including as head coach now where he is leading a dominant team.
his wikipedia resume shows that he was a DB's coach for five years at UNI; that's not even accurate. he was the assistant head coach his first two years, was co-defensive coordinator his third year, and was the full-time defensive coordinator his last two years.
the year he was co-defensive coordinator, he shared the role with ... scott frost.
klieman was the one who called the plays on gameday, not frost.
rake is so good. And compelling.
Big play offense so far in this playoff game.

i dug through a bunch of old articles looking for negative-sounding klieman stuff so i could make fun of him, but honestly didn't come up with much. he's far more intriguing than norvell or brown or any similar type guys imo.
two things give me pause though:
Because he knew fans would freak out over CK. Even if he thought CK was the greatest FCS coach in history he should feel out other candidates

if you're looking to see if he exceeds expectations in this game, ndsu was a 24.5-pt favorite
expected pts scored: 35
expected pts allowed: 10

a good AD should be able to sell the right candidate to a fanbase. it shouldn't be a consideration. i guarantee you, if i was the k-state AD and hired a coach everybody melted down about, i'd be at the podium within 3 hours answering questions and by the time i walked off you'd be convinced i just hired the next nick saban.

Oh yeah. I'm just saying he has to look around no matter how much he loves CK. He can still sell him as Saban, just say something like "we spoke to a ton of amazing candidates but they just didn't compare to CK". IMO that looks better for Gene than just trotting him out there the day after Bill has his weird personal band concert.

-

yup, honestly these AD's are all so stupid. if i were an AD, i would be posting on forums like this all the time, i'd have my own blog with brief daily updates, and i'd demand that my top coaches - football and men's basketball - interact with fans on a weekly basis. i'd increase media availability, i'd open portions of practices to the fanbase, and i'd tape my email address and number to every bathroom stall on campus.
i don't know when or why, but at some point along the way athletic departments turned into mini versions of the pentagon; where everything is such a big fuckin secret. at the end of the day, this is sports. sports are supposed to be fun. you enhance the experience of your fanbase and paying customers by making them feel like they are a part of the team; not by walling them off and cutting their access to coaches, players and info.
so many good, qualified, decent coaches get fired on a yearly basis because fans look at a poor win-loss record, assume incompetence, and then demand the coach be run out of town. why do they do this? because they have no other way to evaluate!
but if the coach had a chance to prove his competence, to show you the growth/development that takes place behind closed doors, to share true meaningful insights beyond "we're takin things one day at a time," then i think you would see more coaches last longer than 3.5 years - which is the current norm in sports today.
gene is allowing forums like this one and KSO to control his messaging, and almost all of it is negative. how could it not be? we have nothing else to go off but what we see, and what we see is a whole bunch of meh.

Absolutely.
K-State basketball sort of proved that last year way before the tournament run. KSO put out the regular Coffee with Chris thing and many fans (including myself) softened considerably to oscar and the program. Then the winning at the end, and now a lot of us love our good ole goofy oscar. Plus, oscar goes on the Boscoe's Boys podcast this fall and other stuff. Coaches, this isn't hard.

I am not familiar with any of those oscar-outreach-moments that you cited, as my hatred for him has prevented me from reading anything about him or K-State basketball anymore. However, you have piqued my interest....and as a result, probably proved your point about the opportunities that coaches and AD's have to "win hearts and minds." It's the Christmas season after all...perhaps I should think about this more....

Very true. Everyone is like, “this coaching search is such a dumpster fire” when it’s really just the rumors/speculation/message boarding that is disorganized and all over the place. As for the actual search, who knows, but the odds are it’s actually much more organized than people think.
Now I think it would be a bad idea to have a lot of fan interaction during the search because (1) any current coaches don’t want publicized that they’re looking to leave, and (2) it hurts your negotiating position. But no matter who we end up with I’d be a lot happier if Gene takes the podium and gives a detailed explanation of the search and decision making process.

You guys are so weird. It’s like your dream scenario is to lose a winning coach to an FBS team.
-
“So are you going to give the team some time off after this win or is it straight to the next playoff opponent?”
“Well, that won’t be up to me cause... IM TAKING THE KSTATE JOB EVERYONE!”
*Thunderous applause, tears of joy in the Fargodome*
NDSU AD walks out and hands him a KSU visor just before giving a 20 second hug.
The band starts playing the KSU fight song and the whole stadium sings along because they’ve been hoping/expecting this day would come.
-

It is truly bizarre. But on some level, it makes sense because it places them at the same level as a Memphis or Troy or whatever. Which is kind of remarkable since they were division 2 not too long ago.

KState fans brush with Colgate. this explains the pettiness towards your new overlord.

Tip of the hat to Gene. This has been his master plan since the day he signed. I don't care for his results, but I admire his commitment.

CK is too good for this level. Im a season ticket holder and havent gone to a game all year.
yes, you can get bored of winning every game by 40.

Would CK really be that bad? I’d rather have someone proven at some level who has the eye of the tiger than some rinse and repeat coach just looking for the next opportunity on his/her way to retirement.

Yes. (Don't care if a coach wants to move on, but want to try something different from what every other school in our position would try)
Also, Klieman isn't Bohl, just like Mike Stoops wasn't Bob Stoops and Dabo Swinney wasn't Tommy Bowden.

Yes, I can probably be talked into CK. But he needs to be the lowest paid HC in the Big 12 by a comfortable margin if we hire him.

So we should wait a few years until he’s “proven” himself in your opinion and let someone else snatch him, meanwhile we grab some no name and squander a chance at a hungry up and comer. Nice

What of meaning had LHC LHC Bill Snyder resurrected prior to coming to KSU. Using your criteria, we wouldn’t hire someone with the talent and hunger LHC LHC Bill Snyder had back then. We aren’t Alabama. We need to find a diamond in the rough. Nothing will be guaranteed except mediocrity if we hire a coach with no upside.

Pretty sure Kellis reported that Gene or the search firm interviewed 8 people

It's fairly reasonable to assume that we've had some sort of communication with the following:
Brent Venables
Seth LittreLL
Ryan Day
Chris Klieman
Jim Leavitt
Mike Norvell
Neil Brown
Who knows what other coaches/agents have either contacted Gene or the search firm and vice versa

Maybe we should just start calling Klieman "the Nick Saban of the FCS" to feel better about this

if we had all the best players we wouldn't really need much of a coach.
not sure why ksu isn't more strategic in acquiring people who can get them players
i guess because so many people think because snyder is moderately successful compared to others that we don't need talent
if u look at snyders record against top 20 teams it looks pretty similar to any team at the bottom of their league

kansas state
chris klieman
this is a bond that has been forged in college football history
gene "the mustang" taylor is going to hire klieman again, as he did when he was the ad at ndsu when craig bohl left ndsu for wyoming in 2014. taylor can point to klieman's 66-6 (yikes, the devil!) coaching record and natty champy trophs and tell everyone that his guy is a winner. he knows klieman. it's the easy path to take. why make things harder than they need to be.
i'm sure that klieman, gene, and both the snyders, will get along just great as they build the future of k-state football.
we're k-state. be happy with what we're given.
this thread is a week old and here we are. this administration is so utterly predictable and sad.

Everyone on this site complains all the time about our 11 CT nationally televised kickoffs. OU darn near refused to play at that time because they hated it so much. but I don't think they are so bad.
Love 'em.

UPDATE*** Gene Taylor is like the Gladiator in the Colosseum fighting off President & High High Level boosters for Klieman. Gonna be a mess tonight/monday. Stay Tuned***
ps. the Cessna Citation is flying back now. :Wha:
pss NDSU football is on ESPN 2 Fri night 7pm !! so they could even delay decision until after this game
-
Honestly an AD search would be pretty fun right now too. Kirby and Brent package deal.

It's fairly reasonable to assume that we've had some sort of communication with the following:
Brent Venables
Seth LittreLL
Ryan Day
Chris Klieman
Jim Leavitt
Mike Norvell
Neil Brown
Who knows what other coaches/agents have either contacted Gene or the search firm and vice versa
Where did your get Ryan Day from? Haven’t heard him mentioned anywhere. Why would he talk to us if he’s taking over Ohio State?

ESPN reported he was a candidate for our job, that was before Urban Meyer retired, that almost certainly came from one of his people.

No Dino :frown:

No Dino :frown:
Very uninspiring list. Makes you wonder why we canned bill’s ass.
-
I can’t tell if people are gE-ing, but it is WAY better to force Bill out when there aren’t any super hot prospects available. It was always going to be an awkward transition, and we certainly would’ve missed out on any top prospects because of the crappy timing in Bill “making the decision” plus the whole following a legend issue.
No matter who we hire next, we either catch lightning in a bottle or we at least give ourselves the chance to be in a position to nab the next Tom Herman type when they come up.
So really the most important thing IMO is not wasting money on an unproven. Either pay top dollar for a proven candidate or find a guy who wants to prove himself and pay him like any unproven guy. In that way, GT was probably in the right when he drew a line in how much $ we’d give a promising (but unproven) guy like LittreLL. At the same time CK makes quite a bit of sense as a gamble if we can get him cheap.
It’s been said a bunch that KSU has this massive war chest, but if we go all in on a guy who flops at KSU, that money will go away pretty quick and not be replenished nearly as fast as it came in.
-
It doesn't really make any difference how much the school pays its football coach. The only thing paying less accomplishes is making the coach more likely to leave if he has any success.
-
We have the financial capacity right now to make someone a top 10 paid coach. That won’t always be the case. So if we can’t get a top 10 coach right now, why not basically wait until one is available and gamble on a cheaper guy in the meantime?
-
We have the financial capacity right now to make someone a top 10 paid coach. That won’t always be the case.
It won't be the case whether we pay our next coach like a top 10 coach or we pay him 500k. The school isn't going to save the money for the next coach. It would just get spent elsewhere.
-
Soy beans will come back up, guys. You’ll see.

The money will be spent on renovating our stadium to cut capacity by 10-15,000 seats so it can kind of look full in a few years.
-
I mean it’s still saving money even if you’re actually spending it on sunk costs.

BUSTED!!! NDSU head of scouting Hank Jacobs:
@lakesbison Twitter:
@hjacobs67 must be scouting Kansas pretty hard now that you are following coach Snyder and his commits.
Klieman has a press conference at 2pm today (like all mondays) download bison 1660 am APP to listen 11am-2pm
or NDSU is using this search to steal your recruits... thatd be sly... since there is a poll on ndsu bisonation nd facebook

This makes me feel like CK is a backup plan here and dominoes would have to fall before the job is his. Can't think of any reasons to delay an announcement if he was the guy.

Jesus he's desperate to get the job

Maybe Gene is paying him to lay cover for his real candidate. He’s got the Yokels that follow ndsu convinced.

Or Gene wants Handjob Acobs over here and not Klieman.

To be fair this isn't much of a chore. Christ, I could tweet out a couple of things and 15 of those dopes would following me in minutes. That would include Clover btw..

Recently, I negotiated a new job that started off offering roughly a 40% salary increase, and I played it cool.
If another company approached me about possibly having a 400+% salary increase for the same position, I envision myself appearing extremely desperate in trying to get that job.

I liked that he said he thought he did a pretty good job at the interview

Ok so real talk for a second, if he has any juniors worth a crap on that roster at NDSU he can just bring them with right?
-
LB Jabril Cox would look good in purple.
-
I am glad this process is over now but I'm still not excited about this coach. I'm sure that will change if he wins. Winning can change a lot of things.
That being said, I think everyone needs to have realistic expectations because the next few years may be tough due to the cabinets being bare. Hopefully the assistants he brings are amazing and we can finally start recruiting.

I think a lot of people feel the same way.

Nope, he is a freshman.

Time to get on board and support the coach. Just think if he stays for 27 years and breaks HCBS's records we can all look back and remember this day fondly.
Go get'em coach.

But is it really that bare? We were a couple plays away from winning against Texas, TCU, Baylor and possibly ISU. It appears that we have some RS Frosh that can play. Defense dealt with injuries all year and offense battled itself on who would be QB (identity). 2 non-con + KU = 3 Wins. Need to get three out of OSU, TCU, Baylor, ISU and TTU (three of them at home) to get to a bowl. Hang in tough against the other teams and call it a successful year 1 of the rebuild? Realistic? :ksu:
-
I think we're abnormally thin on scholarship players. A lot of transfers and stuff.
-
Will some stay because of the coaching change? Next question is do we want them to stay?
-
I don't think you can untransfer. They gone

I hope he is my new and forever favorite CK.

Didn't Warmack announce that he was transferring but because he was still enrolled at KSU was able to rejoin the team? :dunno:

Oh yeah. I'm just saying he has to look around no matter how much he loves CK. He can still sell him as Saban, just say something like "we spoke to a ton of amazing candidates but they just didn't compare to CK". IMO that looks better for Gene than just trotting him out there the day after Bill has his weird personal band concert.
yup, honestly these AD's are all so stupid. if i were an AD, i would be posting on forums like this all the time, i'd have my own blog with brief daily updates, and i'd demand that my top coaches - football and men's basketball - interact with fans on a weekly basis. i'd increase media availability, i'd open portions of practices to the fanbase, and i'd tape my email address and number to every bathroom stall on campus.
i don't know when or why, but at some point along the way athletic departments turned into mini versions of the pentagon; where everything is such a big fuckin secret. at the end of the day, this is sports. sports are supposed to be fun. you enhance the experience of your fanbase and paying customers by making them feel like they are a part of the team; not by walling them off and cutting their access to coaches, players and info.
so many good, qualified, decent coaches get fired on a yearly basis because fans look at a poor win-loss record, assume incompetence, and then demand the coach be run out of town. why do they do this? because they have no other way to evaluate!
but if the coach had a chance to prove his competence, to show you the growth/development that takes place behind closed doors, to share true meaningful insights beyond "we're takin things one day at a time," then i think you would see more coaches last longer than 3.5 years - which is the current norm in sports today.
gene is allowing forums like this one and KSO to control his messaging, and almost all of it is negative. how could it not be? we have nothing else to go off but what we see, and what we see is a whole bunch of meh.
I honestly thought this was OK!

If I was a FCS player who was below a 1 star and didn’t get a single D1 offer and then my former coach got a 7x pay increase to coach a shitty D1 team I would be congratulating him too.

:Chirp:
All of them had FBS offers ya dolt
Currently on NDSU team there are starters that turned down Missouri, Purdue, Minnesota, Iowa, Rutgers
pst. we even have a 2019 Commit that turned down Kansas State!

I mean Jabril Cox would have started for us the last 2 years and he’s from KC
-
Very True Willie.
LT Dillon Radunz is 6 7 310 agile beast had a Missouri Offer, why didn't K State get him?
San Diego Chargers LB Kyle Emanuel is from Nebraska.
NDSU had a 4 year starting LB Matt Plank from Overland KS?
K state will do just fine with this hire, now stay away from NDSU recruiting hotbed!

It's been said before, but for real the part I dont understand is why all these ndsu fans wanted him gone so badly

Klieman has clearly lost control of a substantial portion of the team, but also looks like he knows exactly what it takes to right the ship.

I'm scared he won't know how to handle all the the attitudes "there's I in Heisman" associated with our talent.

I like Klieman a lot. I also like Scottie Hazelton a lot. I basically love the defensive staff and am super meh about the offensive coaches.

Because of what he did at NDSU and what he did here last year with a bunch kids he didn't recruit he will always be a target. Big 12 middle of the road school is no longer a place people really be like yeah I'll go there and actually commit to winning. I would even say the Big 10 is more desirable than the Big 12. Klieman is special and will always be desirable. Don't get me wrong i'm not saying we aren't a desirable school, just after snyder finally retired it took a certain type of individual to sign on and fill his shoes.

Eh people don't get hired up from mid tier B12 schools very often. Matt Ruhle went to the NFL but who else? Obviously they flirt with other jobs to get raises but almost always get fired or stay. (I'm responding to Greg)

Ok valid point but you have to think of others who have left in recent memory? Kliff Kingsbury is another big one. Think of all of the assistants that leave and move on. Head coaches don't move AS often but you might be worried a bigger school will pick him up? If he can build something very nice where we have to reload once every three years. Can you imagine the offers? He could become a D coordinator at an SEC school or move to a school in the Big 10 if they really really needed a head coach. He can and I hope get to that caliber of coach. I just hope when he does get there that he stays at KSU.

Kliff got fired! Klieman isn't going to a DC role and would probably only go to three Big 10 schools if they asked (PSU, Michigan, Ohio State) and those aren't jobs that open up very often and he might not be what they want. Maybe he'd go to NU or Iowa but probably not. :dunno:

But Kliff is successful! The man hustled his way to his job. But if an SEC school needed a head coach? Would he go?

I think Iowa and Minnesota are the schools that would take/kli would leave for. This is based on nothing but my own intuition which is frequently extremely wrong.

eh I suppose but that's not a common move coaches make. Iowa's had Ferentz forever but Minny's last two external hires came from the MAC and an NFL position coach came before them.
And think about the circumstances: I suppose PJ Fleck could build Minnesota into a powerhouse and leave for a top tier job but more than likely he leaves because he gets fired. And if CK is a decent coach he would have built KSU into a steady program that is probably in better shape than Minnesota. Probably not worth the risk to jump at that point.

Mid-tier B12 coaches don't get hired away because OU pantses the conference year after year. It's the same thing that gets Texas coaches fired.

Yeah this is a great point. The best ones all have like one year windows to compete for a title every four years or so.
But like, it's pretty similar in the big 10, Pac 12, and ACC. Mike Leach left but he's kind of a wear out your welcome guy. Taggart was kind of a strange one but again pretty rare.
The SEC seems to hire from within the conference more often for some reason.

SEC coach cannibalism has always seemed so weird to me. Really ups the hate factor tho. Imagine if we hired LittreLL and he was actually good, then jumped to OU after a nice 3-4 year run. Or if Matt Rhule did it at Baylor then peaced out to Texas.
-
I really wanted Texas to hire Briles back before I knew he encouraged rape so much.
-
I'm just gonna put this here because I came across it while looking for SEC schools hiring coaches away from conference foes.
My day has been made

they also have the weird downward/lateral moves like Houston Nutt to Ole Miss and Muschamp to South Carolina and the oddball wildly successful coach O taking over LSU.
I think the LSU thing should show everyone (especially coaches) that the situation you're taking over makes a hell of a lot of difference in how successful you'll be.

Well an isu coach and an osu coach have won nc's in the sec so maybe more teams should try out mid-tier b12 coaches :th_twocents:

very true, forgot about those guys. Chizik was such a bizarre hire but it kinda worked!
-
Kind of OT, but this thread is like a warm blanket for football discussion. We need more of this, besides the PITT is getting redundant.
-
Minnesota can't afford Klieman but Iowa can. There is no head coaching candidate on that staff now and Ferentz doesn't really have an active tree outside of Ken Wisenhunt.
-
What do you mean Minnesota can’t afford Klieman?
-
Klieman is an Iowan Born & Raised and yes he would goto Iowa in a heartbeat for less money than ferentz
-
What do you mean Minnesota can’t afford Klieman?
Let me rephrase, Minnesota has not shown that they are willing to invest in football enough to be able to poach a current P5 head coach. Any coach going from P5 to another P5 will be able to command 5 mil +.
-
Minn spent $130 million dollars on athletics last year.
They hired the hottest G5 coach available on the market place in Fleck.
They spent $275 million on a new on campus stadium.
Who out there is poaching away P5 coaches who are any good?
FSU got Taggart away from Oregon, but Taggart had a lineage down that way.
I suppose Leach to MSU But WSU athletics is a sinking financial train wreck that's only going to get worse because of the pandemic and the PAC not playing.
-
This belongs in the Smoke Your Cigars thread, but with the PAC missing out on playing this year there will be a lot of dissention among there teams. May be great for picking in a few years.

I don't disagree with your assessment. However, I'd also like to add that assuming the above is true, that Klieman hasn't done anything yet worthy of $5 mil a year. If we win the conference in year 4 or 5, then yeah, we'll have to pony up money to keep him here. But until that happens, I don't see him leaving for another lateral job.

this puts him ahead of Campbell (unless Campbell's gotten a raise) and behind sweaty Gary, GOANdy, Lincoln, and Herman. Not sure where Aranda falls. Seems reasonable given he's proven he won't be in over his head IMO.
-
I'm happy about it. It shows we'll pay in the top half of the conference and might help him recruit. I would assume and hope there is some sort of bump in the assistant pool as well.
-
does the fact this is happening in a year when ticket sales are going to be down drastically mean that our boosters are just rich af and don't care?

I don't know but I saw Gene make a video begging for money after he said the BLM patches were hurting the bottom line. He could have just been full of crap and an bad person about the patches though.

Rockem, sockem, QB coach CK makes 325K, but Jake Waters only makes 72.5K. What a difference in pay. :surprised:

Low confidence Matty got an extension after the USA Today data was released but the only terms that were made public was $1,000,000 for assistant coaches.

TBH, I don’t think he’s ever been much of a threat to leave.

moving this from the hskr thread....I didn't realize we had that 8 game clause but I think it's a fantastic idea. I've long been in favor of lifetime contracts for someone that can do that at KSU.

But we can all agree that Nebraska getting to eight wins in the ultra-physical Big Ten is more difficult than it would be getting to eight in the Big 12, where defense often appears optional.

There is a guy on KFH all the time that sounds similar. Arena football coach or something. Kind of annoying as well.

Coach Tru was a big improvement over Dawson & I liked Dawson. One of the most impressive things about Klieman is his constant tweaking of the staff to make improvements

When he started he was 49 and turned 50 on 10/07/1989. My bad math, was due to watching a promotional clip of him becoming HC of KSU which said he was 51.

Wikipedia lists 29 pre-Snyder head coaches. Too lazy to see where the discrepancies are.

Jim Dickey quit 2 games into his final season. Lee Moon was interim head coach. For some reason he is not counted in the total. That would be the 30th head coach prior to Snyder.

I'm feeling pretty confident saying that he is the 2nd greatest FB coach in KSU history at this point in time.
-
He's also a lock for the college football hall of fame. It's wild that a program as historically awful as ours has had 4 hall of fame coaches
-
The accountant in me has been thinking about this all morning while on a training call.
31 individual coaches thru Ron Prince, but Snyder served 2 terms, Lee Moon interim isn't counted, Hobbs Adams served 2 terms (40-41, 46).
So if you're counting separate terms regardless of name, then 31+3=34 making Chris Klieman the 35th different coaching term.

Think of it like Presidents, Tom. If you’re the 22nd coach, and then they hire another guy, and then they hire you back right after, then you are the 22nd and 24th president
