Its tough to saturate 6mb/s on a home network without torrenting/downloading large files. Normal usage /video streaming won't touch that.

We aren't generally downloading large files, just watching Uverse through the wireless box and browsing gE or maybe watching through Amazon Prime (which has several times said it isn't getting a signal and has to stop but then when I go back into the show it will start back up again).

So then Saul is saying that a higher speed isn't going to help our issue...

post results here. The router should have physical ethernet ports too that you could plug in. I would suggest running the speed test while on wifi and comparing the speed to while plugging in. that will help narrow down the problem.
Where did you get that overnight bag?

OK, I'll have to do this tonight. I got 8.34 Mbps here at work and I watch TV shows online here all the time with no problem.

I might still have one packed up.  I use the new ISP's router here.  Can't remember if my old one got taken in #TrimsStuff.

OK, this thing wouldn't even run until I moved to right next to the router...and then I got these results...
Download Speed 6.30 Mdps
Upload Speed 1.41 Mbps

I'm going to have to find a cable to run it plugged in.

Just ran it again from my kitchen (which is upstairs and about 25 feet from the router) and these are the results I get...
Download Speed 0.07Mbps (not that's not a typo)
Upload Speed 0.64Mbps

WTF is going on?

No it is just a normal floor between the basement and ground level.

I know uverse is a pain in the butt to move, but try a different location in the house and possible move from different line of sight locations to see how fast its dropping off.  Could be a dying router.

 :dunno:
I still don't know what to do to fix it. If I am getting a good download speed near the router with significant drop off away from it then paying more for a faster speed isn't the answer. Either the router is mumped or my laptop is having a problem receiving the signal.....but the wi-fi signal strength bar fluctuates a lot all the time on the laptop and my phone so I think it is the router.

So maybe I should call AT&T and tell them to give me a not mumped up router?

Is there some standard for how far away you can be from the router and still get good download speeds?

yes, tell them you want a non-mumped up router and a second access point for upstairs since they gave you shitty equipment.
