Title: Fix Trim's router or whatever is busted
Post by: Trim on April 16, 2011, 10:55:54 AM
Power went out last night.  Woke up.  Appears internet has been down since then.  Trial and error'd a bunch of stuff and it looks like internet works when I plug it straight from the cable box to the computer, but now when I go from cable to router to computer (wired or wireless).

WTF?

Buy a new router.

can your laptop see your wireless network or any other wireless networks?

Buy a new router.

Problem is I'd be as poor at setting that up as I am at figuring what's wrong now.

can your laptop see your wireless network or any other wireless networks?

Yeah.  The computer actually connects to the wireless network, but there's no internet access when doing it that way.  There's also no internet access when I run a wire from the router to the computer.  The computer sees mine and all the wireless networks around here, but I don't know anyone's password.

yeah, you prolly need to buy a new router.  it isn't actually that hard to set up.  I even did it.

So they just break out of nowhere like this and stop letting internet juice go through them?

Saul was here messing with it a few weeks back.  Maybe he broke it?  Point is, I have no idea what the eff I'm doing.  Always needed to hire someone or have a computer-savvy bro mess with all wireless-related stuff.

Remember when TP accused me of being the "main administrator"?

I just gave my old router away to Cole 2 weeks ago.  :frown:

Elwood,

mine does this every once in a while  unplug the power to the router for several seconds, then plug back in.  Give it a second to reset.  This works for mine.

If not, new router.

And, all you really have to do to set a new one up is plug it in(other than the security side).

One other check, does your phone connect to it?

buy new router
plug router into cable modem or whatever you are using
set your password on the router so nobody downloads your internet juice
the end
go to the Anchor

Tried the unplugging thing.  No luck.

I don't think my phone is involved.  From my cable modem box, there's a phone wire that goes to the phone and a computer wire that goes to the router or computer.

What makes the thing just stop working like that?  Anything to do with the power going out?

I mean your mobile phone.  Does your's connect to wifi when available?

Anyway, if it doesn't reset, and your mobile doesn't connect to it, you prob need to go to the new router route.

Oh, it was basically the same as the computer.  It would connect to the wireless network, but not give me any internet juice.

Does the router have a manual reset button anywhere you can see?

Everyone hold on.  It appears that pushing that reset button may be different than just unplugging and plugging back in.  This crisis may be solved.

Yeah, now I'm mumped.  I've got internet but it's on generic and unsecured linksys and linksys_media network names and I can't figure out how to make it go back to the way it was with emaw names and passwords.

It looks like I now have goEMAW_media and EMAW.  Can you make "EMAW" into "goEMAW", and should I then delete the emaw and emaw_media from the list of networks it tries to connect to (those were the old names)?

My PS3 is turned on.

Will do, delete the old ones and reconnect with the new ones (same password).

You will need to do that on your PS3 too

It doesn't look like the PS3 is going as fast as you had it last time.  On the connection test, it says UPnP is Not Available and Download speed is 3.6 with upload speed 1.9.  NAT Type is 2, which I recall Cole telling me sucks and should be 1.

Also, did you switch which band is "media" and which isn't?  My phone and PS3 are only finding the "media" band.  It used to be they could only find the "non-media".

The media band is 2.4 ghz, which is what the PS3/Phone would use.

Try out a game online and see if it works.  I can try out an NBA jam game online at some point this weekend to test.  NAT type 3 is the one you don't want, 2 or 1 is fine.

OK, that's the opposite of what it was before, which I'd thought made sense - like you'd want movies and games and stuff to be on the less frequented band, but of course that really made no sense as my PS3 and blu-ray player couldn't get on that.  Your way makes sense now.

Yeah, give me a shout when you can Jam.  I'll wait until then to mess with it.

Did you have the page open the entire time?  I'm guessing that you did and it had the old settings open "ready to be saved" and when you clicked save settings, it saved the old stuff back.

How about one TV with the wireless box and one laptop...because sometimes that is all that is running and it is still slow.

Your internet package advertises rates of 3.1-6 mbps, and that can fluctuate a lot depending on factors beyond your control.  If your cable box is actually streaming content through your router, I'd imagine that's pretty bandwidth-intensive.

http://www.att.net/speedtiers

As you can see, it's actually one of the lower tiers.  Plus, AT&T sucks (But that's another story).

That is just the one that came with the TV400 (which is almost the top cable package except for TV450 which has a bunch of extra channels that we would never watch)......I don't think we specifically picked that internet tier.

Its tough to saturate 6mb/s on a home network without torrenting/downloading large files. Normal usage /video streaming won't touch that.

As part of its 2015 Broadband Progress Report, the Federal Communications Commission has voted to change the definition of broadband by raising the minimum download speeds needed from 4Mbps to 25Mbps, and the minimum upload speed from 1Mbps to 3Mbps, which effectively triples the number of US households without broadband access. Currently, 6.3 percent of US households don’t have access to broadband under the previous 4Mpbs/1Mbps threshold, while another 13.1 percent don't have access to broadband under the new 25Mbps downstream threshold.

We aren't generally downloading large files, just watching Uverse through the wireless box and browsing gE or maybe watching through Amazon Prime (which has several times said it isn't getting a signal and has to stop but then when I go back into the show it will start back up again).

So then Saul is saying that a higher speed isn't going to help our issue...

post results here. The router should have physical ethernet ports too that you could plug in. I would suggest running the speed test while on wifi and comparing the speed to while plugging in. that will help narrow down the problem.

I know uverse is a pain in the butt to move, but try a different location in the house and possible move from different line of sight locations to see how fast its dropping off.  Could be a dying router.

mrs gooch, you are better than this.

 :dunno:
I still don't know what to do to fix it. If I am getting a good download speed near the router with significant drop off away from it then paying more for a faster speed isn't the answer. Either the router is mumped or my laptop is having a problem receiving the signal.....but the wi-fi signal strength bar fluctuates a lot all the time on the laptop and my phone so I think it is the router.

So maybe I should call AT&T and tell them to give me a not mumped up router?

Is there some standard for how far away you can be from the router and still get good download speeds?

yes, tell them you want a non-mumped up router and a second access point for upstairs since they gave you shitty equipment.

Whatever router Uverse gave me sucks ball(s) and taints. If I have more than like three devices connected to the WiFi it is slow as crap. At the max I would have two smart TV's, a laptop, tablet, and two phones possibly connected at one time. What router (is that even the problem?) should I get to fix this?

call them and have a technician give you a better modem/router combo.

Well, when you call in, that is what the cable company/uverse is going to tell you to do, so then you can smush them with the data already in hand and say something like, "Look, I already took this problem to goEMAW.com, they aren't a bunch of idiots. And keep saying their "name" all sarcastically.  Oh yeah? I already tried then, "Ben".  That didn't fix the problem, "Ben." Except, can't do air quotes obviously, so just like a sarcastic inflection that lets them know you know that's not their real name.

It doesn't matter if I do it ahead of time, they are just going to tell me to do it while on the phone with them. It is really a pain to get up there and unplug it too.

Well - we've narrowed down the problem.

You might try upgrading your laptops wireless drivers. What make/model of laptop is it that is sucking ass?

Also, go to control panel > device manager > network adapters > find your wireless network adapter and right click properties > Driver tab. It should list a date/name/etc. What does it say?
Title: Re: Fix Trim's router or whatever is busted
Post by: Saulbadguy on June 19, 2015, 01:35:37 PM
Also get me the model # of your uVerse modem/router. Changing channels would probably help, but not sure yet.

Another test if you are a night owl - run the test in the middle of the night. There is likely less wireless traffic/interference going on.

TL;DR - the overall problem w/ wireless is competing for "air time". Even though you are on different SSID's (wireless networks), those are just logical, not "physical" networks. You are competing with other wireless networks (and any other devices using the 2.4 or 5ghz spectrum) to transmit data. When there is a crap ton of those devices on the same spectrum, it's going to cause problems.

Distance/range is another problem too which seems evident based on you get better speeds when you are closer to your router. You could try repositioning it, or running a network cable down through the wall somewhere and relocate your router to wherever you spend the most time at.

OK, well I ran it at 7am this morning and the speeds were slightly better than ~8pm last night (I would think there would be less traffic at 7am)....I will try to get all the info tonight.

Also, the router is located there because that's where the line comes into the house and moving it would include running a bunch of cable like through the floorboards/walls/etc...which would have been a PITA. Also, our newest TV upstairs (in living space adjacent to kitchen) has a wireless cable box for this same reason.

Intel Duel Band Wireless-AC 7260

Looks like your drivers are up to a late enough date, that's probably not contributing to your problem.

Its tough to saturate 6mb/s on a home network without torrenting/downloading large files. Normal usage /video streaming won't touch that.

The eff?

One single HD stream can be over 5 mbps.
