Hey, Deverre. We're poised to get crazy with it now tomorrow. How are the two lovebirds holding up? Might be a good weekend to stay in and watch Netflix.

Also, I don't how many of you enjoy patriotic pop music videos featuring horribly pronounced auto-tuned anti-American English choruses, but here's this: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=283654118470525&id=100004778166581

Hmm. I fear I may have undersold this. Just skip to the 3:45 mark for what is perhaps the most moving call against foreign political meddling in all of pop music history: "wer fuse intrfeerns nowr inturnafaaaaaairs!"

Not to mention the "Siiiisiiii Eshipsionn laaaaaaav!" chorus.

Only in these promotional videos. It's a little disappointing to be honest.

Yeah. The song is about how all Egyptians love Sisi. Did you see the guys doing pull ups? That was maybe my favorite part.

A culmination of things. There were already massive and violent protests (burn it down style) with several (mostly MB) student groups ringing in the new semester by protesting against the return of security forces to campuses (one of the major "victories" of the 2011 revolution was a ruling banning ministry of interior forces from universities but it just got overturned).

Then there mass death sentence where the judge held a trial for two days and then sentenced 529 MB supporters to death for killing one policemen last year.

Then there's Sisi officially announcing his candidacy, which in the eyes of the opposition also officially makes it a coup.

So the MB called for mass protests against Sisi, the pro-military called for mass demonstrations to "thank Sisi for running" and the students are still flipping cars and burning things down and getting pelted with birdshot and tear gas.

Update: it's still batshit crazy.

But also there's a new Ecuadorian restaurant in my neighborhood, and it's really good and you and you can bring your own booze so that's a nice thing.

Here's a terrifying video of a would be rape circle broken up by police in tahrir last night. Def NSFW and will probably be taken down by YouTube soon.

The police are helping, yeah. I just extended my tour through mid 2016.

It was hard to tell from the unsteady shots and glimpses of nudity if she was being freed or not. I hope they got there before anything worse happened.

What's the consensus reaction to, I forget his name, the satirist being forced to end his show?

The consensus among sensible folk is that the most prominent critical voice choosing to self-censor himself after already continuing his show through three regimes (who all arrested/charged/threatened him with various complaints) is a pretty chilling sign for free speech under Sisi.

The pro-Sisi crazies say he was an agent of the MB and the US and a Zionist (this is a rare trifecta of nefariousness, even for Egypt) and that he quit to make Sisi look bad.

Mainstream, young Egyptians are just pissed that their favorite show is gone. They used to gather in squares and the streets outside cafés in huge numbers and watch every Friday night. His show was the top rated program every week, and the replay was usually ranked 3-4. Just a massive amount of influence. But like he said, his two million twitter followers weren't going to protect him.

Yeah. It's one if those rare instances where fireworks make something worse.
