what is special about this weekend? does everyone still go to friday prayers and then cut loose as soon as the man stops yodeling?
A culmination of things. There were already massive and violent protests (burn it down style) with several (mostly MB) student groups ringing in the new semester by protesting against the return of security forces to campuses (one of the major "victories" of the 2011 revolution was a ruling banning ministry of interior forces from universities but it just got overturned).
Then there mass death sentence where the judge held a trial for two days and then sentenced 529 MB supporters to death for killing one policemen last year.
Then there's Sisi officially announcing his candidacy, which in the eyes of the opposition also officially makes it a coup.
So the MB called for mass protests against Sisi, the pro-military called for mass demonstrations to "thank Sisi for running" and the students are still flipping cars and burning things down and getting pelted with birdshot and tear gas.
