Basketball practice facility in K-State's future
Mark Janssen Senior Sports Writer
1/24/2007 1:28:51 PM

Returning to "basketball school" status is going to be costly to Kansas State University and its fans.

Coach Bob Huggins put in a polite plug for a practice facility during a teleconference a week ago. "There's not any question that our people here realize the need for a practice facility,. he said. "It's not a big deal in recruiting, but we need to continue to upgrade our facilities, and we're working diligently to do that."

The most recent meeting on such a facility was on Monday with the Kansas City-based HOK architecture firm.

"We're trying to take a logical sequential look at all our needs for the next 10, 15 and 20 years, and as we speak today, a practice gym and corresponding support areas are near the top of our immediate plans," said athletics director Tim Weiser. "It's difficult to say what that time frame is, but we're working on how we can make this work financially."

Ideally, Weiser would like to construct a limestone "front-door" setting to the west side of Bill Snyder Family Stadium and Bramlage Coliseum. The cost would range between $20 million and $50 million depending on what would be included.

"That's a huge number for us to crunch and make sure it makes sense in the long haul," Weiser said.

"I think our baseball stadium is a great example of the strong message a stone look can send and how it matches the look of the rest of the campus," Weiser said. "We need to find that look for our football and basketball facilities."

In part, the construction would include a practice gymnasium with two basketball courts on the lower level, plus the replacing of the concession and restroom areas on the south end of the stadium. Also being considered are meeting rooms for the student-athletes and a hall of fame setting.

"Our facility (Bramlage) is not just an athletic facility," Weiser said. "We have to work around graduations, concerts and Landon Lectures. I believe that we're one of only a few schools in the Big 12 that does not have a practice facility."
Weiser noted that football has an indoor facility, plus three outdoor fields. "We need to give our basketball coaches more room for individual training and the assurance that their seasons will not be disrupted by other events," he said.

Fans will help pay

A portion of the funding for a construction project will come from the preferred seating plans Kansas State is offering.

This year that includes 25 courtside seats priced at $4,000 each, plus the cost of the basketball ticket.

Next year, associate athletics director kurt McGuffin indicates that more courtside seats will likely be added, plus sky-boxes that will be positioned in the top 10 rows of Sections 17 through 21 on the east side of the arena.

The 10 to 12 boxes, for 8 to 10 fans per box, will be priced at $3,000 per seat, plus the cost of the ticket. As with the football suites, a catering and alcohol menu will be available.

"We have a couple very firm commitments and the interest list is growing daily," McGuffin said.

McGuffin also indicated that the row of seats behind press row on the opposite side of the team benches will be sold for $1,500 per seat, plus the cost of the season ticket.

"This is all being driven from a financial standpoint and is an equity issue," Weiser said. "People should be rewarded for their support.

Football improvements

Bill Snyder Family Stadium will be given an extra dose of limestone for the 2007 season. A wall will be constructed around the base of the stadium.

In addition, the 40-year-old wooden bleachers and aluminum chairback seats will be replaced in the lower level of the stadium with all aluminum benches and chairbacks.

"These are the original seats in the stadium," Weiser said. "With the aluminum seats, we ran out of repair parts a long time ago."

This post sucks w/o dax commentary.

It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

Well, I knew this was coming.

The most interesting thing will see what Weiser does with the rest.

If he follows the FULL architectural recommendations, the KSU sports complex will be totally transformed.

If Wesier goes through with the total package on the basketball facility then KSU will have one of the best basketball practice, office, training facilities in the country . . . period.  The thing is, does Timmy have the balls??

If he goes through with the full HOF recomendation, it will be incredible.

Legends Room . . . 3x's larger with views of both basketball court AND football field.

If he goes through with all the landscaping and aesthetic projects as well, the KSU sports complex will look more like a college campus, and with the renovated Jardine coming along it will be very cool.

That's about all I can share for now.

That's awesome to hear. Thanks for the info. You know one thing that is interesting, and I dont know if anyone else agrees, I have absolutely no problem knocking down the seating of bramlage 1k or so for a couple reasons..

1. The suites bring in so much more money, its ridiculous
2.  A stadium with around 12-12,500 will sell out much easier with our population base challenges. A sold out stadium draws even more demand and makes it more of an event. (which it will be with huggins)

I had also heard a rumor that K-State was looking at opening a mini bar/retail district across from BSFS. Anyone know if this is accurate?

Yeah . . . the problem is, that's research land, and the athletic department has to jump through a bunch of hoops to do it.

But if they pull it off, and then they get the main Grain Science building built, it will mean quite a tranformation for that area.

Bramlage is an all purpose arena, thus it is used for several different things. Any time someone else is using it the team doesn't have anywhere that they can practice. That is the problem..

Congratulations on seeing through the bullcrap.  Facilities are way overrated.  You can't transform yourself into a real badass in a pretty, sterile environment.  And nice facilities certainly aren't necessary for anything one could hope to achieve athletically.  Anyone ever seen "Rocky?"

Or a hot day.  Plus they are slippery in wet weather, someone crowd surfing may get killed.  Bad idea.  I had the pleasure of sitting in the aluminum chairs on the West side this year,  :yuck:

the limestone on the outside needs to be done in a bad way, will look awesome.

Yep . . . and on the 350 some odd days a year KSU Stadium isn't hosting an event, those old wood bleachers look like crap . . . many of those non use days are recruiting days.

This is long overdue.

Plus, you're clueless if you don't think KSU needs a basketball practice facility . . . tell me you're just being sarcastic.

Know I'm preaching to the choir with you, Dax, but...

Why does everything we do have to be so dang secret?  Wouldn't renderings & models build more interest in the project, thus more $ thrown its way so it doesn't have to be done half-a$$ed?
As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.

remodel ahearn for the practice facility, then in the future when I burn Bramlage to the ground we'll still have a place to play.

I just wish we didn't have a &*$@!ing field across from the football stadium.

I couldn't disagree more.  Guys- let's remember what we are- Aggies.  There's nothing to be prouder of than the fact that we are the Kansas Ag school and Kansas is an Ag state.  All the hicks from all the little hick towns is what makes K-State what it is.  All the suburbanites from JoCo are what makes ku what it is.  I'd rather be an Aggie with a milo test plot across the street from the football stadium.
