which one screams "downtown portland" more than the others?
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

too much smugness in coffee shops, plus I don't like coffee, so I have never been in one.

It's not like there's a large selection, there's just two unless you count Starbucks (ha, yeah right). Bluestem, or Java for the elite Manhattanites, has good food. I don't go to Radinas much but I know they roast their own coffee. I would go with Java. It seems Radina's attracts more high schoolers and older people.

Why spend $5 on a cup of coffee when you can spend 99 cents?

I had no idea neocons hated coffee shops so much.  Seriously.

Radina's roasts their own?  I bet it makes for a ton of college age and young proffesor douche baggy types that talk it up and refuse to drink anything else even though it's probably garbage but they can't tell the difference.  This is my experience with most places that roast their own. Obviously some actually have good coffee but most end up butchering perfectly good beans.

I don't drink coffee unless it's winter and I'm at a motel for work, so the coffee is "free."

Do you hold this same logic for booze, strippers, hookers, blow, etc?

probably. i would honestly consider opening tons of mhk businesses based on how good things are going to be here in the future. where would you put it? do we choose or does dunkin donuts choose for us? prob need to start another thread to discuss all this....

Dunkin Donuts (called DuDos by east coast elites) ---->  X-large, iced hazelnut, 2 splendas, extra skim.

True story here, young LSOC used to hit the Espresso Royale that was where Radinas is now.  He had some friends who worked there and became dangerously addicted to iced mochas one spring.  Well, he moved to an elite east coast city which I will not name and directly across Commonwealth Ave from his elite condo was THE ONLY OTHER ESPRESSO ROYALE IN AMERICA.

spooky.

I'm not qualified to answer that question, actually.  Didn't spend much time in downtown Seattle despite being at UW.  Downtown Seattle is more business-like than elite, IMO.  Absolutely nothing going on after 6pm.  Plus, buses effing everywhere thanks to complete lack of elite modern pubTrans.  Elite (hip) Seattle is Capitol Hill, Fremont, and Belltown.  You've lived there, though, right?  You should know.

Downtown PDX is cheap enough that many of the young, creative folks (many of whom have fled from Seattle's high rents) can afford to live there...or at least right across the river.  Portland music scene is pretty incredible for the size of the city - so many bands call it home.  In my experience, Portland coffee shops are more elite.  You'll find Tully's and Starbucks all over Seattle, and those, my friend, can't be elite no matter how hard they try.  Also, there are tons of complete assholes in Seattle, whereas Portlanders are pretty mellow.  IMO, a lot of Seattleites fear/know that their city is inferior to NYC (and to a lesser extent San Francisco), and Portland residents fear/know that their city is inferior to San Francisco (and to a lesser extent Seattle).  Seattle is super hungry for condo towers a la Vancouver, BC, whereas most people in Portland would hate to see downtown PDX "yuppiefied" by condos (it's happening anyway in NW Portland).

I love how Leyton's all, "I don't know much about Seattle downtown" and then proceeds to post tons of insidery Seattle downtown info like it's nothing

Portland coffee (Stumptown) is all the rage in NYC.  Portland FTW.

Radina's roasts their own?

sd yes I believe they do, and it does indeed taste like garbage. but radinas, bluestem, and the one art gallery-coffee shop are the only cool places in town.
