Great idea by Sprint...hopefully they can attract some more customers.  More likely is that they cannibalize their own revenue when their current $99 all you can eat customers take a $30 price drop.  I'm curious which one of the other carriers will finally not be content to just pick off Sprint's customers and go for the whole bite.  Their demise is just about assured.

I retired from Sprint with 30 years of service back in March/April of this year.  I was a subject matter expert on Nortel switching systems for wireline and CDMA wireless.

To be blunt, I wasn't that up on Sprint's phone and plan offerings.  'clams was a good source, but you'll play hell catching him.  Sounds like Kougs knows a bunch about these things.

looks something like this w/o the windows mobile (like i said, it's android), i think the screen is HVGA too.

It's way over priced, but it looks pretty damn cool. if you set the phone down on it's face while on a call, it automatically switches to speakerphone.

The Hero represents a valiant effort from HTC -- though unfortunately, the company appears to have bitten off more than its last-generation hardware can chew. If this build of Android were to be loaded atop the guts of a 3GS or Pre, the performance would likely be astounding, but fused with the two-year old architecture of previous devices, it's mostly disappointing. We're not saying this isn't the best build of Android on the market -- we think it is. What we are saying is that this build is a bit too much for a device like the Hero to handle, and that makes for an uneven, sometimes frustrating experience.

Clearly, Sprint is using this new pricing plan as a way to stop the blood-letting of customers. Even though the company already offers some of the lowest priced and comprehensive plans on the market, customers have been fleeing Sprint to go to other carriers for several quarters.

Why do people not understand that there is a reason they are still barely keeping their head above water and not even coming close to competing with AT&T and Verizon??

Please update us when Sprint actually has a net gain in customers for a quarter.....

Engadget probably played with the Hero for an hour or so. Kougs has used it for 2 months. Just sayin'. Also, I don't really disagree that it's not the smoothest interface in the world. But it's a good interface, and packed with customization options.

I've had Sprint Service for years, and have never had a significant problem with them.   My local Sprint is awesome, they fall over themselves to help you, the hire hot college chicks . . . but I got a Blackberry, just found out my f'ing company doesn't support Blackberry, so I can't get email and transfer contacts etc. etc.   So . . . I guess Palm Pre, I've only got like 2 weeks before I can trade my phone in, so I can't wait for the new phones.

it's a dated phone, very highly disrecommened by 'lams.  same hardware as the Touch Pro but with a bigger screen.

Charlie Rose asked Sprint CEO Dan Hesse about how the Palm Pre is doing against the Apple iPhone. The bottom line: Well, but not too well. It almost feels like he's admitting defeat from the start.

Q: Is the Palm Pre making a dent into the iPhone market?
A: Aaah... It's-it's doing well, but you can almost put the iPhone, to be fair, in a separate category. The Apple brand and that device have done so well, it's almost not... it's like comparing someone to Michael Jordan.

Well, not really, Dan. It is exactly the same category. It's just that Apple owns the category. So yes, you are right that the iPhone is like Michael Jordan, but the Palm Pre plays in the NBA too. In any case, don't give up so soon. We—the consumers—need the battle so Apple doesn't get so frigging lazy.
