It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

Lived there for a year an a half.  Pretty much the poor man's Lawrence.

Probably the worst capitol city in America (aside from D.C.).

Allow me...(I'm a native as well).  1 being the best, 6 being the worst.

1.  Topeka High, but only if you are in their honors programs...best in the state, seriously.  Prolly better than SM East and the BV's.  If you are a normal student, you are only slightly less likely to get car jacked than a Highland Park student.  Dean Smith's Alma Mater.  Place looks like a castle.

2.  Washburn Rural.  Exact clone of any of the BV schools.

3.  Shawnee Heights.  If Seaman were a good school district, it would be like this.  No where even close to Rural...you could drive a freaking truck through the gap between 2 and 3 in this list.

4.  Haden.  Catholic, and smaller (usually 4A), but great tradition in sports and fan following.  Lots and lots of Mexican Americans.  Kinda funny...whole place is either Lilly white or Mexican (like from Mexico, not just Latin).  Again, Catholic though  :yuck:

5.  Topeka West.  Sad what has become of this school.  15-20 years ago, this school was Rural.  Now it is just trying not to turn into an inner city school.

7 (tie).  Highland Park.  Rough, rough neighborhoods go to this school.  Horrible education and even worse sports.....'cept for MBB.  School is a true dump.  Frighteningly bad place.

7 (tie).  Seaman.  Might be one of the worst college preparatory schools in the state.   Zero school spirit, tons of evangelicals running around.  Strait up white trash. My Alma mater.

I think you are overrating Washburn Rural.  Also, Hayden should be last.

Nice rankings, Pete.  I would probably have to put Hayden above Shawnee Heights, simply because of Hayden's football tradition.  Also, some of the skankiest, yet hottest girls in Topeka went to Seaman.  They were always nice to have at parties.  Had some epic battles with Nick Carlson and those guys back in the days on the ol' hardwood.  Seaman's not as bad as Highland Park, IMO.  Other than that....

frack you!    Rural definitely belongs above HiPark.     THS has some good programs, but IMHO Rural gives a better education than the rest of 501.   And we won't discuss Seaman.

rural is in the middle of nowhere and has a generic looking school.

Probably would agree with most of these, 'cept I think Hayden should be above Shawnee Heights. Hayden is similar to a cult, but Heights is kinda gross. Rural is probably the most elite. T High has a lot of tradition, Seaman is pretty trashy.

Yeah, I remember back when Topeka West was all preppy & white and couldn't beat MHS in basketball or football to save their lives.  It was so bad they actually made shirts that said 'Beat Manhattan' and used to do chants.  ("Beat Manhattan.  Beat, beat Manhattan.")

Haden and Shawnee Heights were the toughest two to rate.

I finally decided to put Shawnee Heights ahead of them because while they are in the same league (Centennial), Heights plays 6A ball while Haden plays 4A ball.  Both have had fantastic MBB progams in the past as well.  Heights teeters on the edge of white trash, and Haden is definitely no where near elite of an overall institution as Kansas Catholic schools like Wichita Carrol or Joco Aquinas....It's Topeka afterall, and there simply aren't that many affluent Catholics, let alone secular folks.  Heights has always had good golf and track, not that those matter a bit.  Probably the biggest factor for Heights over Haden are the facilities.  Haden has a postage stamp of a campus.

I would accept a tie between Haden and Heights grudgingly.

Highland Park is tied with Seaman on my list because of how very, very little Seaman accomplishes with it's resources, versus how much Highland Park is able to do.  That is both academically and athletically.  But hey, you run this list by the fellas over at the Goodyear factory and they'll flip it upside down...they LOVE Seaman High School over there.  Love it.

Saul, spell check &@#%ed me.  Regrets on that.  I'll give the catholics their &@#%ing "Y."

Heights has been both, as has Seaman.   At one point, I know that Seaman was 6A MBB and 5A football.  I am certain that Heights has been 6a at some point.

an assitant topeka high bball coach tried to have us kicked out of a bball game. we'd stand behind their huddle and yell the whole time. sometimes funny things about their coach and the fact that he was a dwarf/midget/freak. the asst coach talked to security and security tried to kick us out. got a teacher of ours that was there to talk to the guy and we got to stay. just had to move seats.

permanently banned from topeka west when we stole a big banner thing that their bball players were supposed to run through and ran through it ourselves. got chased by cops into the parking lot and finally tracked down at a mcdonalds across the street.

used to play travelling baseball at dornwood park that was by highland park and i can't imagine a worse place in the entire world. very sad place indeed over there.

Me too.  Very sad to leave a game, on your way to go get ice cream on the other side of town and witness that hell hole....HPHS is literally 2 blocks from that.

team name???

we used to play...pal bears, strikers, dr pepper demons. crap, some good team that i can't think of now.

also, dan jacobs once hit a baseball 400 ft off of me in 8th grade. luckily the fence was 410 (omaha firecracker tourney). that guy had to have been a 17 yr old eighth grader.

Played little league there for a few years.  Yeah, pretty bad place.  Remember being made fun of in grade school by the "SCABA" little league baseball players.   :frown:
