Keep praying.

It's a done deal trust me.

D.O.N.E.

I saved the city some money too, but not having to hire an expensive big city artist to design a cold, unfeeling corporate logo.

MHK is the friendly airport, and I like to think I contributed to that.

Should've included this slogan in the text of the design.  Maybe in TEAL!  Can you go back and add this now that the contest is over?

No, but you're probably the only one who didn't realize it after his first couple of posts.

I think you're wrong.  I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the site mods check to be sure users are actually who they say they are when they register a real user name.  (Legal liability and whatnot.)  I know Wefald posts on this site.

Nope, I realized it. I just couldn't figure out why you would argue with someone who was obvisouly full of crap and just trying to annoy you. (who probably can't stand the logo any more than you can)  It's your time to waste. Have fun.

no. you are actually in the wrong here. i know because i used to be a moderator. iirc ghost of stan parrish actually had to add ghost of at the beginning of his username because he is not actually stan parrish. this is probably why he knows this rule and most around here don't. the moderators do indeed ip check people and would not allow someone to say they are someone they are not. anyway, welcome to the site and i hope you love it as much as you love manhattan.  ;)

I didn't really want that story getting out, but oh well.  I couldn't believe how quickly you guys called me out on the fact I wasn't really Stan Parrish.    :yikes:

Damn that's awful.  The orange is driving me crazy, too.

My favorite is Bookcat's logo, followed by the second-place finisher with the apple incorporated into the hills.  (That's hills, not mountains.)

:Carl:

I'm still trying to figure out why the plane is circling the mountains.   :dunno:

Green mountains no less. Are those supposed to be the Appalacian Mountains?  Those are less 'peaky' and more rounded.  Peaky mountains are usually brown because they're made of rock.

Nice of them to steal the logo from the Fort Collins/Loveland Regional Airport (which oddly enough, like the logo design, had a minor crash today.)  Also are there going to be 777s flying in and out of the MHK?

Kind of ugly. Very small-time. It just screams, "PROPS!"

I wish we would have just ripped off the SFO logo.

Are you guys so dense that you think every piece of art has too look like what it is?

Ever heard of Monet morons?

If the other choices were so great how come they didn't win?  I have not designed multiple logos by accident.

I could on and on with what's wrong with those other logos, but I won't because I am not that kind of person.

 Monet's do look like what they are.... if you stand back far enough. Monet was known for Impressionism & Pointillism... the style you are looking for is abstract?  Kandinsky would have been a better argument.

monet....

Too many letters as well.  You must be concise on a logo, like many of my award winning ones.

24 letters.

26 letters.

65 letters.
You don't count the foot-text.  Duh.

There's your free Graphic Design lesson for the day.

Ohhhhh...   I get it!   A bunch of content doesn't make it look like a giant cluster &@#% when the content is really small and serves no purpose because a logo is more about simple dynamic features that allow customers to associate that logo with the company through branding!   I get it!   Thanks!

In the end I won and that's all that matters doesn't it?

You all had your chances to show off your "skills" and you lost.

And how much did you win?   I mean, people pay a lot for good design.   You didn't donate your expertise... did you?

I called my shot on this one.

That the airport was being cheap and was running a big risk by hosting a logo contest and that they'd choke selecting a winner.

A friend of mine who has worked as a professional designer for 8 years (award winning too) submitted a design to this thing...and his didn't even place. I haven't seen it, but I guarantee it was of a higher design quality than what won the contest.

You guys may be interested.

The letter I submitted upon seeing the "winning" entry and the response I received back from the Airport Director.

I honestly believe two of the three were somebody's children.

-------------------------------------------------------------

To whom it may concern,

As a graphic design professional, K-State graduate and lifelong advocate for the community, I respectfully have to voice my disappointment and confusion towards the winning selection for Manhattan’s Airport new identity.

If the intent was to enhance and modernize the branding image of Manhattan Regional Airport as a first class, progressive facility for the city and the region, this new identity fails at virtually all levels, candidly.

The importance of a strong, recognizable brand identity is at the heart of any successful business and is one of the single most important tools to establish a connection to the general public, to effectively voice the message of a company’s essential qualities, and to ultimately drive revenue.  Frankly, as a professional graphic artist with a specialization in this type of branding and corporate identity, the winning selection is a very poor reflection of the high level of quality or service, aspiring vision and future growth of our airport.

In the best interests of Manhattan Airport, I would highly recommend reevaluating this selection and establishing a bona fide design jury with a professional background that could help assist in this process.

If you have any interest in taking me up on the offer to assemble such a group, please feel free to contact me and I will happily donate my time.

All the best,

----------------------------------------------------

I greatly appreciate your comments regarding the importance of having the right branding for the Airport.  We received many entries that will provide us with great ideas for a new logo, assuming we end up going in that direction.  As the Airport continues to grow, there is a realization that it is a regional asset.  The contest was an opportunity for the public to provide input, but was not an attempt at identifying the one logo entry that would become the new airport logo.  If a decision to proceed with creating a new logo is made, a professional firm will be brought in to assist in that endeavor.  Since yours is not the first e-mail I’ve received expressing concerns about the winning logo, I am encouraged to know there is significant interest in seeing the Regional Airport continue to grow in the right direction.

Thanks again for your interest.

Sincerely,

Peter C. Van kuren
Airport Director

This sentence made me very very angry.

If that is the case..

THEN WHY EVEN HAVE A LOGO CONTEST AT ALL!!! ?????!!!

R.A.B's submissions looked so much better than the winning design.

Also, r.a.b. be sure to look at the first page of this thread and see a few more submissions that didn't even place.

Excellent letter, btw.

Yep, looks like some good work was submitted.

Frankly, from what I have seen, if they had simply enlisted the help of a qualified, professional design jury for this selection process, there would have been a worthy winning entry.

Instead, they apparently just assembled an internal group of people with no design background, no identity development or branding experience, and basically had done no market research.

Based on the negative reaction to the competition results, it’s apparent they realize a mistake was made.  Hopefully, they do make good on their word and they ultimately enlist the service of design professional.  And by design professional, I mean not a local sign shop in Manhattan of Junction City.
