Is it trouble when you throw away the old warn out 8-track stereo or the 45 record player in the closet?

Sources: K-State's Epps, Cavello placed on administrative leave

BY JEFFREY MARTIN
The Wichita Eagle

Kansas State senior athletic administrators Jim Epps and Bob Cavello were placed on administrative leave this afternoon, two sources told The Eagle.

Details on the length of the leave were not immediately available, and K-State did not release information.

It leaves K-State without two of its top athletic department officials four days after new athletic director John Currie began his work in Manhattan.

The move is the latest in a series of unexpected changes in the athletic department. The changes began in January when then athletic director Bob Krause took a new job as director of the school's satellite campus in Olathe.

On May 20, it was revealed that Krause and former football coach Ron Prince had agreed to a $3.2-million buyout -- in addition to a publicly revealed $1.2 million buyout if Prince was fired after the 2008 season. That second agreement had not been negotiated by K-State lawyers and was, KSU said, a deal only known to that point by Krause, Prince and Prince's agent. Krause resigned from his Olathe post after the secret buyout was revealed.

Epps was quoted in a statement May 20 saying he had no knowledge of the second settlement. K-State has filed a lawsuit in Riley County District Court to void the settlement.

Epps, who is the deputy AD, completed his 30th year in the Wildcat athletic department this spring. He is in charge of daily internal operations. He began his K-State career as an academic counselor in 1979, then was promoted to administrative assistant for football in 1982 and special assistant to the head coach in 1987. He was named senior associate AD in 1990.

Cavello, associate AD for business operations, has been at K-State since 1996. He oversees financial, contractual and business operations for the department, as well as overseeing the men's and women's golf programs.

Good news - surprised it didn't happen sooner.

    The very best.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

Still trying to figure out how I had such a cognitive disconnect with Krause, when 4 or 5 years ago I went to a whole new level of hate from the Powertards on the Wabash when I was discussing the clusterf_ck that had become the Colbert Hills financing, and how Krause was right there in the middle of all of that.  No wonder the KSU Foundation wanted the guy out of athletics.

Very dumb on my part . . . .  :banghead: :banghead:

Wow never put those dots together before. Makes you wonder were we would be if Timmy would have just listen to you and not return your money in a Dear John letter. :angryMJ: Being serious about this no joke.

Storm . . . The Colbert Hills financing really didn't involve the athletic department per se.   If you were to go back and look at it, it was a shifty little deal that Krause put together with Colbert and others, that also involved the Vaniers.   Jack whined about how he "gave the land away" but low and behold Daughter Vanier has all the development rights around the course . . . the KSU Golf Foundation then defaults on the bonds issued to build the course and so on and so on and so on . ..

don't understand why they don't just fire them and start officially looking for replacements.  you don't put your top 2 athletic department officials on admin leave and then retain them.   maybe they have buyouts too?

Don't either I would shove their pink slips up their rears and kick them out the door but it is the "proper" way of doing it.

Because, dumbass, there is a lawsuit pending about the "secret" deal, which, evidently, wasn't so &@#%ing secret.  Gawd you farmers are slow.

Everyone knew our Ath Dept was completely incompetent. Why the frack does it matter if there is even more evidence of this? It's great news that house is getting cleaned. You're a &@#%ing retard for not being able to comprehend this.

Bob Cavello is a real piece of work.  &@#% that guy.  Billy Zabka has a very unEMAW story about him.  Don't recall all the specifics but I'm sure he'd love to share now that ADJC is cleaning house :peek:

They may be on tenure as well so you can't actually fire them without going through a committee, blah, blah, blah.  Placing them on administrative leave just means that they can't work and screw something else up until ADJC can get through all the hoops needed to make them resign and a severance package negotiated with them.  KSU is very into the good PR stuff so as not to have them come back saying nasty things about K-State.  Just like RP, won't be no badmouthing K-State after they pay him his 1.2M and his other 3.2M. Can't say anything bad about that.

Again, dumbass, your President was, once again, in the media crying (literally) about his best buddy, Krause, negotiating a secret deal which evidently wasn't very secret.  Try not to be so "kstate" will you.  Your AD is completely inept.  You are embarrassing the state of Kansas, let alone the Big 12.  Try not to contibute to the douchebaggery, will you?  God you're dull.

Jim Epps was the guy that convinced Snyder that a deal with Fresno State would be better than a deal with the Colordao State Rams.
