Harman is officially a starter at Safety. Apparently he has told folks that last year he was just wining it, trying to teach himself how to play safety, and this year he is "being coached." Kinda hard to believe that they literally did not coach him, and also kinda hard to believe that our former coaches were really THAT much worse that the current guys, but that is now pretty much the talking point across the board on the defense. Prolly just a Koening(sp?) smoke screen and preemptive CYA, IMO.
I think its pretty clear that the lack of coaching on the defensive side of the ball is not being exaggerated at this point. That was maybe high school JV level stuff that we were putting out there technique and scheme-wise. Some of the stuff we did that is now being confirmed by the players is simply mind-boggling for a BCS football program.
don't buy it for one second. what was stopping moore/harold from being good? hartman sounds like a loser making excuses.
I have to agree with this. Also, gmafb with the "coach em up" crap...what was stopping the staff (essentially the same staff as we have now I might add) in '04 and '05 from producing a good defense? I'd like to think it was less Rashaad Wahington's and more Jesse Tetuan's, rather than Jesse not back pedaling properly.
I never said talent wasn't a big issue, it most certainly is. And I'm not sure we win more games with a better scheme/better coaching. However, we would've been in position to win more games, there is no doubt in my mind. And teams would've had to work harder to scheme us. Seriously, you see the issues we had defensively on film and the high number of poor tendancies and poor habits we had, its not too tough to game plan and you are going to go into games with more confidence. That's football. Granted, if you have talent deficiencies those are tough to hide as well, but good coaches can scheme and gameplan for a while to give their team a chance. And they can scheme to put their best players in position to make more plays. IMO, Prince and his staff did neither very often and Snyder did that several times his last couple seasons, just not enough to make up for the lack of talent. There is a reason Prince didn't have many, nor win many, close games.
Now, is that what you build a program with? No way. You have to recruit and Snyder will sink or swim based on that, but I do think he can put a more competitive product on the field with less than Prince did, but that simply isn't very difficult to do.
Hey, the ksufans.com montra of talent is amusing and has a lot of truth to it. But at the BCS level you also better have sound schemes, be able to gameplan, and put players in position to be successful. If you have one or the other it probably isn't enough, but if you have neither like we've had the last several years you are just going to have a horrible football program.
