I need ideas about a car for a 16 year old.He wants a mid size SUV. But I want it to be safe and have decent gas mileage.

He's not the fastest guy in the BIG XII he's the fastest guy in the country.

Here's an idea.  Tell him to pick out his own f*cking car and pay for it/gas/insurance himself.

I think the point is for them to be "doing" something else.

Also, ford escape?  Maybe a jeep liberty?  This all depends on how much you are wanting to spend.

It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

It's funny because it's true.

some cheap little foreign car.  like a 1990's honda.  great gas milage, not expensive, and not embarassing for a 16 year old to drive.  the backseat is still big enough to bring a girl into.  you'll both be happy.

My first car was a 1999 Saturn sedan.  It has lasted me approx 7 years and will probably be good for another 7.

Don't get him an SUV.  When you're driving a little lego car you don't drive like an a-hole as much.

Plus cheaper, lower maintenance, and generally all around smarter.  Remember, you are paying for half and you are the parent, so you get the say--don't buy a car to be a buddy to your kid.  Buy something cheap that he/she can drive til college.  It will depreciate very little in that time.  Then use the money from the sale of that one to flip it for something a little more expensive and reliable to last through school.  Repeat process over and over and eventually will be able to get a near new (new=ripoff) car paid for in full.
