clams.

go with canon.

90% of all our photogs, use canon, and swear by it. they convinced me to get a canon 40d.

can NOT go wrong.

I don't think you can go wrong with either Canon or Nikon.   There's some functionality button layout that I like with the Nikon that is more of a pain with the Canon, but I personally shoot Canon.    Haven't spent much time with anything newer than a 30D but I love my camera.   My advice, just get to a store, hold both of them, decide which is easier and more functional for you.  Buy that one.

QFT.  It's kind of like the old Chevy vs Ford thing.  I personally shoot Nikon:

You may wish to get Ken Rockwell's take on things:

As far as the Canon v. Nikon (or Sony for that matter), as long as you don't have any glass (lenses) already, just pick one or the other, I don't think you can go wrong.  Last year, I would have said Nikon (I shoot Canon), they had really pushed tech/quality further than Canon (Apart from the 1DsIII).  But Canon has caught back up with the 50D and 5DII.

If you are looking at the D90, if you can wait awhile, Canon just announced the Digital Rebel T1i.  Available early May.  $100 less, with the 50D's sensor, HD video capture (almost the same as the 5DII, except 1080p is 20fps, 720p is still 30fps).  $799 body, $899 with kit lens.

Ken Rockwell has already been mentioned.  Couple of other sites:

BobAtkins.com (the Canon version of Rockwell)
dpreview.com (Great forums, they have a DSLR buying guide as well)

Some other great photog sites:

Photo.net
The Luminous Landscape
Strobist
DIYPhotography.net

Recommended for the beginner...but if you are wanting a simple step up from a point and shoot camera the Canon EOS Rebel is a steady performer.

First:  &@#% Ken Rockwell.  Complete CameraTard.

As far as what camera you should buy, any specific model recommended without asking the question "what are you mostly going to be taking pictures of", is probably going to be bad advice.

But yeah, Nikon and Canon both make good stuff, and because they're the big guys it also means that there is more used/third party stuff available for them than the other guys.

I &@#%ing hate the way the low end Canons (Rebel XX) fit in my hand, but others love them.  Everything in their line from the 50D on up I have no complaints with.

The advice given about getting an idea about what models you're interested in and then picking them up and seeing how they feel in your hand is spot on.

If what chupa says is true about the 90% thing then I would go w/ canon. Then when you have your canon w/ you and you see another person with a canon you can be like "hey, nice camera. did you see that turkeywhacker tourist trying to shoot his family with a nikon a couple of minutes ago. more like nikant huh. gmafb, what a bozo the clow."

yeh, its true. we use over 35 professional photogs. most die hard have switched to canon FROM nikon, and i used to be a NIKON man myself. but when a close friend whom i trust in the camera world highly suggested it, i did.

i prefer nikon point and shoots and canon DSLR's.

canon cameras can use nikon lenses, but not vice versa.

every AF lens works on ever AF camera - including the DSLR's. thats nice.

both will do the job. and do them fine. and if its for craps and giggles, then i guess a nikon will suffice.

I bought a Canon XTi awhile back.  I've recently added a 70-300 Image Stabilizer Zoom lens.

I love it (both the camera and the zoom lens).

For most people reading this thread, a lens mount adapter (using Nikon lenses on a Canon) isn't going to be all that practical.  Yeah, you can do it, but you lose a bunch of automation.  If the phrase "stop down metering" doesn't mean anything to you, this isn't really an option.

Canon pulled way ahead amongst the professional ranks (particularly photojournalists) for a while based on having better sensors. Nikon gained back a bunch of marketshare with the D3/D700.  Look at the shooters in the NCAA tourney.  Two years ago they pretty much all had white (Canon) lenses.  A lot more black ones this year.

Also, Nikon P&S cameras  :yuck:
