So my wife was teaching her algebra students the power of savings and compound interest - you know, something they will use.  When the kids saw numbers in the millions stemming from a relatively small savings amount per year, they discounted it, saying there is no way that could happen.

I can't really speak to the 'noodle' element of your post, but I knew Jake in high school and he's not the kind of kid to say something like that in class, nor would he be caught dead wearing a $4,000 belt buckle.  You can say what you want about him, but being a typical obnoxious, dumb jock would not describe him. He's a fairly intelligent, respectful guy who is probably the most dedicated athlete I've ever been around. 

I would have loved to see him sporting the purple on Saturdays, but I'm not going to hate on a good kid just because he chose the wrong school.
