It's about as damming of a story as you could get, hell they even threw in NCAA violations at the end of it.  The only thing missing was a "Dave Bliss-esque" recorded conversation.

When I started hearing about Jim Jones ... I mean Deb's attempt to create a cult 3 or 4 years ago, and then read how the team stopped to "save a puppy" on the way to an NCAA tourny game, I knew things were way screwed up in the women's basketball program.    Plus, don't get me started on the "fans" who only support women's basketball and don't support the programs that make women's basketball possible ... considering that at KSU, women's hoops losses nearly $1 million dollars a year.

Patterson answered all the questions I had. I also spoke to athletic director Tim Weiser on more than one occasion. K-State knew the nature of the story I was doing. There was nothing in it that I had not asked them about.

This past Wednesday, I called Weiser to ask some additional questions about a couple of issues I'd come across in continued reporting and that would result in a sidebar to the main story. I left a message in which I also told him that all this would run Sunday, Oct. 1.

Friday morning, Weiser returned a call and said he would check into the issues I asked about and get back to me later in the day. He asked why the story was running this weekend. I explained that I'd first filed it in August and this was the kind of piece that needed a lot of time in the editing process. I was out of town a lot during August and early September covering golf and the WNBA.

Then the principle editor went through it very carefully. Other editors also looked it over. We worked it into shape. And the story was very lengthy, so we needed to run it at a time we had enough space in the paper. All of that added up to Oct. 1.

Roughly six hours after my conversation with Weiser, K-State sent out a release that Patterson had agreed in principle to a new five-year contract. As of early Sunday morning, I'd yet to hear from Weiser again.

What the squawk doesn't understand is that Roy knowingly told ku boosters it was okay for them to buy gifts and give money to ku players.   

He also didn't report to the NCAA either ... it took his departure and another AD to catch ku boosters STILL sending gifts and such to players with a new head coach ... clearly the practice was ongoing and covered many years.

I was extremely suspicious of the Patterson regime when the article about her Chrisitanity pushing came out.

Coupled with the strange 'family' atmosphere at games, the 'Big Four' (all-white) and the article I just read it makes alot more sense why the get so much support from the local community.  It is an entire program sustaining itself on my Mike Sweeny Theory (with accompanying Marc Dunn/Allen Evridge corollary).

So, DP purchases return tickets a week in advance for the three athletic trainers, flies them to Philadelphia on Christmas day, which some might consider the holiest Christian holiday of the year, fires them all that night in her hotel room, and sends them home the day after Christmas to be greeted by an athletic department reprensative at the airport for a pre-arranged pick up.

Call me crazy, but something about that doesn't sound too Christian to me.
