well, if you want to consider antiquated systems into the mix then you're wrong,  the ps2 is the more popular console right now.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

New warning: Don't get in a fight with someone who doesn't even need to bother to buy ink.

I can't watch anything that isn't in HD anymore.  It looks horrible.  Blu-Ray is sweet.  Playstation 3 will start coming out with more titles, yes.  However, more titles doesn't make it better.  It is the quality that makes it better.  Yeah, go by a 360, play it for a couple months, get the RROD, send it in to microsoft, rinse, repeat.  Great idea.  Or you could just get a PS3, be able to play Blu-Ray, and not have your system break.  Not have to pay for the online portion.  (not that it's that much money).  I don't know why someone would buy a system from microsoft.  They know that they break, but they don't fix it?  They just keep making systems that they know will break.  The PS3's capabilities are much higher than the 360's.  They say that the PS3 will be on the same level as microsoft's next system.  (which will probably break.)
first of all, all electronics have some failure rate, included in "all" are ps3's.
microsoft has implemented a fix for the 360 problem.  http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3472
if your 360 does break, microsoft fixes it for free, and within 2-3 weeks.

people buy the 360 because it's currently half the price of a ps3.  it's also currently the most popular console and has the best online content and gaming experience. if you're only looking to game on a console, then the 360 is the way to go.

for rusty, it'd be stupid to spend twice the money just to be able to push 1080p content onto a 42" 720p television.

Ignoring the RROD stuff, you are wrong - the Wii is the most popular console right now.  If you are only looking to game on a console, the Wii would probably be the best choice, as it does nothing else but game.

I agree though that Rusty wouldn't need a PS3 for blu-ray if he has a 720p television.

The wii is not the most popular gaming console. It's the most popular novelty console.

How is it fanboyish? Gamers don't play the wii. It's not even marketed towards gamers. They've been able to crack into a new niche of consumers. Those new consumers are nursing homes and soccer moms. Those are facts.

I own both and the PS3 has been neglected big time. I only liked 2 games that had almost no replayability.

Seriously? Don't put too much thought into it. It's no secret Nintendo is marketing the wii to a completely new niche of people game developers haven't yet tapped into. I'd love to see statistics for the % of people who bought the wii as their first console.

And clams, the 360's with HDMI will upconvert.

Mine is one of the new ones. I usually watch movies on my ps3 since it is hooked up to the sound system. I usually use my 360 to stream movies from my pc.

Dude, gaming had been going mainstream before the Wii - and just because the Wii is used by alot of "non-gamers" doesn't diminish the fact that it is a gaming console with several good titles.

I'd say gaming started to go mainstream early this decade - video games used to be for nerds only, now it is for every middle aged dude who wants to play some crappy FPS or Madden.

that sucks, everyone I know that's had the RROD has been getting them back within 3 weeks maximum.  you should call them and find out the deal because there's obviously a problem.

not a big deal, I don't play my 360, when my nephew and cousins come over they play it, cause they like halo 3.  COD 4 is better IMO.  Also, the fact that PS3 has blu-ray is the main selling point, I mean a lot of people don't have 1080p yet, but when HD first came out it was the same with 720p, now 720p is the norm, as will 1080p pretty soon.  Might as well build for the future rather than having to buy a 360 now, then a ps3 later.  Pointless to buy a 360 just to buy the HD adapter for 200.00 that then makes the 360 more expensive.  Not to mention that MLB the show is probably the best game out for either system right now.  I don't care if you like baseball that much RTTS is some serious fun.  I played that for about 12 hours straight when I had my shoulder surgery.

Downside for PS3
 - Not as many games
 - Network not as reliable

Upside
 - Blu-Ray player
 - Much higher potential
 - Works with bluetooth
 - Has an internet browser

Downside for 360
 - Have to pay for online networking
 - System will break
 - Pretty much maxed out potential

Upside
 - More reliable network
 - More games
 - Has netflix?

If it's a "gaming console" with a couple good games (debatable) or not is irrelevant. The thing is marketed towards people who haven't traditionally played video games and it's very successful to do so. Steadily growing into mainstream and blowing up into mainstream are totally different. They skipped the middle aged dudes and went right for his wife and her old aunt who has to live with them because of her emphysema.

The only potential draw back is when/if the novelty wears off, the new market they created will fade and the traditional "gamers" will feel alienated and have no need to go back to Wii Fit and the endless slew of Mario games.

The wii has been marketed towards people who traditionally haven't played video games, but then again the entire industry has gone that way.  The industry caters towards casual gamers now, period.  Just look how easy games are these days, GMAFB.

Actually had that on Genesis, and Vectorman 2.

This little app is a work of genius (Mac, PC, Linux).  1080p MKVs play flawless on the PS3

http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/

I own the trifecta.  360 for playing games, especially online.  PS3 solely as a Blu-ray player and media server to my TV.  Wii for when the girls come over and want to play Mario Kart.

Just my contribution to the thread though I hardly read any of it.
