no need for serious gaming.  Leaning towards mac for the easy/plethora of applications.  Ipoding/tooling around the intranets/word processing are the basics.  Extras: Photoshopping/video editing/audio recording (if I pick up guitar again) which make me lean towards mac because I am not so over the top that I will pay out the ass for those applications on windows.

What are the recommends?

Get a sony.  Lower price than a Mac, many more available apps, cool kid in coffee shop, etc.

You realize Windows has about 100 thousand times more applications than Macintosh...........

decide which laptop you would most like to have sex with, if the laptops were human.  then buy that laptop.

That's actually a pretty legit way to think about it.  Problem is KK would end up with a broken solar calculator that smelled like bong water. (no offense to mrs. kk who was the outlier)

You can get a netbook for cheap if you want a small/cheap comp

True, even though at security conferences Vista was proven to be more secure than Leopard, "facts" don't really matter.

The only thing OSX has on Windows is that it doesn't have a registry.

Don't kid yourself, Piss...blatantly believing that there are no virus' out there for mac is ridiculous.  Believing MAC will never have a virus is an even worse idea.

Do you know what a Virus is or how they work?  It wouldn't be that hard to write something that replicates/deletes files or causes other issues once downloaded to a MAC.

    Wait...what?
If you decide to go PC, then wait until this summer/fall, when Windows 7 comes out.  Most folks using the beta seem to like it, and it's supposed to address Vista's issues.  I'd like to partition and install the beta on my laptop, but it's not going to happen as I'm nearly out of hard drive space.

From what I've heard, most netbooks running Vista are wayyyy slow, and preliminary indications are that Windows 7 will run much better.  I've been wanting to get a netbook myself, but not one that's running Vista.  My ultimate plan is to get a fairly cheap desktop to store/stream/transfer media files to TV/stereo/iPod and get a netbook for portable computing, writing, e-mail, internet, etc.  My current laptop is a "desktop" replacement.  It's not as powerful/big for storage as a cheaper desktop, and it's so large that it's really not that portable.  I think getting two separate machines is ultimately going to help me get more out of their functions.

If you want a photo-editing software for Windows, try GIMP.  It does a lot of what Photoshop does, and it's free.

July 1st is the date you want to wait for.  If you buy a machine with Vista on it after that date, you'll be eligible for the free 7 update when it becomes available/ships.

Clarify what you are saying here then - Are you complaining that there are no current virus protection for mac? [1] or are you saying that you don't need virus protection on a mac?  :banghead:

i'm saying it's impossible to write a virus for a mac because the people that use macs are way cooler than those that don't.  only nerdstores need virus protection.
