go up to Santa Monica, greatness there.  also be sure to check out West Hollywood.
it's incred how many nike elite level concerts/shows take place on any random weekend in LA.
a weekend in LA isn't enough.

why are you going to lucky strike, there's one in the P&L

eat at in-n-out.

this place should put the game on for you saturday- http://www.tonyps.com/index.html  in marina del ray.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

    I'm with Coco.
Hollywood is kinda boring. The best thing I did was ride the Metro to the Staples Center and watched a Lakers game. Get to see where Tom Cruise bit it in Collateral. If you're into architecture, there are some amazing buildings (Disney Concert Hall, Lady of our Lords Cathedral, Caltrans Building). Venice Beach is ok. It may sound really touristy, but the Universal Citywalk was fun. Some really great food/concerts there.

Grew up in the san fernando valley, didn't do a lot of the"touristy" stuff, but have since gone back to visit family and taken my wife who was born/ raised central KS who told me I was taking her to that sort of thing. I agree with the previous poster re: universal city walk, it was pretty cool (restaraunts, bars, shops, etc), venice beach was OK, hollywood walk of fame, susnet blvd,  and mann's chinese theater are ok. If you are hanging around by Mann's chinese, you'll occasionally have a studio bus stop and try and get people to go to tapings of TV shows.
If you can, check out a laker game, or go to the horse races (multiple race tracks in area).
Downtown Disney in Anahiem is similar to Universal City walk.
IDK if any of this stuff sounds interesting to you, you can always go down to revolucion street in Tijuana and have a blast all night long.
Definitely go to In and Out and get a double-double.

If you're into that sort of thing the Getty is very cool as is the equally impressive but lesser-known Norton Simon in Pasadena.  The Norton Simon is cool because it's down at the end of Colorado Blvd., a cool trendy stretch (and because if you look around a bit you can get a burger at The Hat without having to drive too far, it's just soooo much better than In-n-Out).

Oh and I'm not sure that spending a night boozing it up in TJ is such a great idea right now.  There were almost as many people killed there last year as there were in Iraq.  It's been a while since I've been there but it's just far more dangerous now than it has been in the past.  Check with some locals first if you think about heading down that way.

Honestly, stay out of TJ. The big problem down there now is kidnappings, and young white gringos at the bars are their favorite target. They force you to call somebody and have them take as much as they can get out of an ATM and bring it to TJ for an exchange. If you can't raise any money, heads may roll, literally.

Here's a good piece on the recent goings-on in TJ.  TJ today is pretty much Medellin at the height of the Columbian cartels, for that matter Mexico is pretty much the new Columbia.

I guess I'm not seeing what is so special about this?  KC has a Lucky Strike and if you are looking for the same stuff as in this picture, i.e. bar, digital scoring and projectors on the back of the lanes, you could easily go to that place in the Legends Shopping Center right near the Kansas Speedway.  It is right next to Dave and Busters, too.

Lucky strike blows.  Dress code?  F off lucky strike dude, i'll get overpriced food somewhere else.

As said, santa monica, hit up china town in LA for some sweet deals on used watches or an armani suit for $15.  Too bad baseball season is over otherwise you could go to dodger stadium and wonder what idiot pointed the stadium the wrong direction.

Also, smog thing is all but gone.  And not dirty at all.  Hopefully moving back to LA soon.

I lived in LA for almost 5 years.  My perfect day ...

Go down to Hermosa Beach and hang.  Manhattan Beach is nice too, but Hermosa Beach is a little more laid back, not as many snobs.  There are some neat little cafes down along Hermosa Avenue.  My favorite wsa on the corner of Hermosa and 21st, I think.  I know Hermosa Ave is right, but unsure about the cross street being 21st.  Anyway, a green building is across from it which houses a C-store owned by Koreans.  This restaurant--forget the name, serves great breakfast, so go early, take an outdoor table, and eat while looking toward the beach.  Not the best view--you need to walk 20 yards and then stroll south on The Strand for that.  The little section of Pier Avenue--about a mile south of this restaurant--that runs between Hermosa Avenue and The Strand is awesome, restricted to walking traffic only, with some cool bars.  Sadly, Sharkee's was burned down last time I was there.  I watched many a K-State game there back during the DoD.

If you're going to be checking out the stars on Hollywood Blvd, head to the corner of Hollywood and Highland and then drive around the area looking for parking on one of the side streets.  If you park in a garage under the Hollywood and Highland Mall you will pay, but there is a parking garage that has an entrance on Orange just about 20 yards north of Hollywood Blvd, and its rates are not too bad.  You should spend a couple of hours in Hollywood/Highland area.  Go check out the historic Roosevelt Hotel right across from the Chinese Theater.  Browse in the Hollywood and Highland shopping mall with the big outdoor quad modeled after D. W. Griffith's set he built for Intolerance, one of the most expensive silent films ever made.  You can enter the mall through the Kodak Theater, walking up the steps toward the arena where the Oscars are held.  If you get a chance, wander over to the Egyptian Theater (half a block east of the Hollywood/Highland intersection, I think, and on the south side of the street) and see what is playing.  They have a lot of cool retrospects there, like a James Bond retrospect or a Clint Eastwood retrospect.  You can get a double feature of some classic movies for a good price if you catch the Egyptian at the right time (I went to a Pasolini retrospect and got to laugh at people running from the theater retching).

After that, head over to Los Feliz and follow the signs to Griffith Park Observatory.  It's a pretty cool place, great view of the city.  The opening of Terminator was filmed there (when Ahhnold comes up naked and works over those three punk rockers), and in Transformers, the Autobots regroup up there before planning their strategy against the Decepticons.

For night life, there are many great restaurants and bars.  I like the House of Blues on Sunset because it's the one Dan Ackroyd and Jim Belushi built as a start-up to the franchise, and they get great acts.  I went there once and saw The Romantics opening for Jim Belushi's Sacred Hearts Band (and that band kicks ass, I tell you).  One of my friends went there to see some local hot band, and Tenacious D showed up as a surprise and performed a couple of sets.  This particular House of Blues is cool because if you get a res and eat there before the concert, you get to see how the walls of the dining area open up to transform the place into a concert hall.  Great fun.

Another favorite place of mine is Old Tony's down on the Redondo Pier south of Hermosa Beach.  There is a bar above Old Tony's that is referred by the locals as the crow's nest, and it is circular with windows 360 degrees so you can enjoy drinks and watch a fabulous view of the sun setting on the ocean.  Not to be missed, in my opinion.  The restaurant below is a bit expensive, but it has some of the best seafood in the area.

Too bad it isn't football season.  Otherwise, I'd reccommend going to Grunions on PCH in Manhattan Beach to watch football.  The 10 a.m. game (Pacific Time) was always packed because Grunions televised every game, and fantasy footballers would hang out there getting a start on their drinking, then having lunch, and by the time the early games were over around 1:00 p.m. they still had plenty of time to go to the beach.  I actually hated it when my Eagles played the second game--it cut into my beach time.  Anyway, not much going on there now.  I did watch some great KSU games there in 2000, as well as some not so great ones (great--NU;  not so great--OU).

Hope that helps.

catmatt, do you prefer "los angeles" or manhattan? thx.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

I'll take Manhattan in a heartbeat.  Manhattan Kansas, that is.  I freaking hate Manhattan, New York and its gritty piss smell.  You Sex in the CIty wannabes can take it.

Tough, tough call.  If we could pick up The Bill and put it on Manhattan Beach just north of Rosecrans, covering some of that crappy refinery, and then make the north endzone face west so the water would be seen beyond, and then we could exit the stadium on the pressbox side after a game, cross the street, and havea burrito at El Tarrasco ... well, that would make my choice a little easier.

also would be good to have the spring game at the Slauson Indoor Swap meet

didn't go to in n out, didn't see one right across from there either and I stayed at a hotel right by the airport :dunno: they were however located all over fwiw.

also while I was at Venice saw wesley snipes riding his bike, kinda cool, I'm pretty sure the bball court that is there is where they shot white men can't jump. they were also having some spirit award independent film award show and I saw john malkovich there.
