Ronnie Chalmers Resigns from ku Men’s Basketball Program to Pursue Other Interests

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self announced Tuesday that Director of Basketball Operations Ronnie Chalmers has resigned his position at ku to pursue other interests.

“We are very thankful to Ronnie for his efforts the past three years,” Self said. “We have all enjoyed his connection and participation with the basketball program. His family will obviously be remembered at Kansas.”

Chalmers joined the ku staff in June 2005 after serving five seasons as head coach at Bartlett High School in Anchorage, Alaska. In his three years at ku, the Jayhawks won three Big 12 regular-season titles, three league tournament championships, advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight twice and won the 2008 national title. Chalmers is the father of 2008 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Mario Chalmers who recently signed an NBA contract with the Miami Heat.

“I have mixed emotions about leaving a great university and a great community. I have enjoyed my tenure at the University of Kansas,” Ronnie Chalmers said. “I want to thank all the staff and fans for their loyalty and support of the Chalmers family while we were here. Our goal was to come here and win a national championship and we accomplished that. I have decided to move on to pursue other interests. I will certainly miss the Jayhawk fans but we will always remain part of the Jayhawk family and the Lawrence community. God Bless you all.”

Self said he will start the process of replacing Chalmers immediately.

“I certainly understand why Ronnie would want to pursue other things at this stage following Mario’s departure to the NBA but that does not take away from his contributions to ku the past three years. He will certainly be missed,” Self said.

Ooooh.  Very interesting.  Maybe we'd have a shot at landing him on our staff.

any talented truck drivers out there w/ basketball playing sons qualify.  military experience preferred.
When I was a kid growing up in the projects, I used to dream of going into space, of escaping the slums, of killing an Ewok!

I think we are all just floored by these developments.

I don't think any one of us fully understand/stood what an integral part of the equation Ronnie Chalmers was to ku basketball.

Step on up Mr. Henry.

Who will now bring the sense of discipline Senior Chalmers gave to the program these last three years?

Maybe Self can bring in R. Lee Ermey.  He's a Kansas guy.  Not a carpetbagger from Alaska, like the previous DBO.
As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.

Ronnie was just so good with those kids . . . when they came over to his house to pick up their envelopes of cash, he'd tell them little anecdotal stories to help them stay on the straight and narrow, then hand over the cash and send them on their way with a hearty pat on the back.  God speed Ronnie, god speed!!  :'(

Ronnie once advised Sherron Collins to always carry a tissue or hanky with him "just in case" he needed to wipe something up.  This advice later proved very valuable to Sherron.
