The "let's move everything back to Ahearn" crowd is just ridiculously naive about this issue.
Fire code updates.
Air conditioners.
Better scoreboards.
New bleachers ALL THE WAY AROUND.
Better bathroom setups, i.e. more than two urinals per 11,000 people.
New place to put the press, i.e. not in the rafters.
Electronics updates.
Do your research of old articles in the university archives (Hale 503) and you will find that this place was a dump by 1985 standards -- there's a reason so many thousands of students were campainging for a new place -- and it hasn't been updated since. And by the way, if you are part of the "let's move everything back to Ahearn" crowd, you lose your right to insist that we spend money on the new basketball facility, updates to Bramlage, etc. It is inconsistent to claim on one hand that we have to have the glitziest facilities possible to lure good recruits, then turn around and yearn for the nostalgia of a preposterously out of date building. Pick one or the other.
Don't get me wrong: I LOVE Ahearn, and would probably go to great lengths (see: blumpkin) to have kept updates consistent throughout. There's nobody more willing to sacrifice sports viewing comfort for historical venues than SkinnyBenny. But the fact is that we didn't do that, and it's too late to turn back now.
