Pretty impressed with DCA u17, WJ (purp Adidas a la MB last year ) and RM looked very good for u17.  In fact, this DC team could've beaten the any of Wooly's teams.

Thats the same thing I thought about Kenny Kadji after watching his team play Beasleys! I'm sure Judge is a solid player!

Spiece seems to have the best o'all team, but DCA seems to have the top talent.  Of the teams I've seen so far, Pumas, Speice, Texas, DC, and Bass.  WJ has been the best player.

I would put both Lat Will and Magruder over Judge after watching the games all day. Very impressed with Rodney.

it's been a busy day as i've been videotaping most of the big games on day 1 of the tournament (mainly those involving k-state interests). of the teams i saw, i would say the most complete team is probably Spiece Indy, although i think the bench play of the Mo-Kan team that defeated DC Assault makes them equally tough.

NOW TO THE PLAYERS THAT MATTER...

Latavious- (Tay: as referred to by coaches and players) He's extremely gifted and athletic. Hits the boards ferociously and dunks violently, seriously... violent. At times though, he seems to get lazy; walking up and down the court uninterested or finding himself way too far outside the paint. Would also be nice for him to hit the weights a little (very slim). Still, he'd be an AMAZING pick-up for KSU to mold and wouldn't be a 1 and done deal. Seemed to shine under the Bramlage lights as opposed to any of you who saw his 9:15 am game at the Rec. Best part of the day- seeing him show up to the final game of the day wearing slippers.

Rodney- Probably the best all-around player I saw all day (besides Thomas of Indy and #11 of MoKan: No idea what his name is). He is aggressive on defense and can score a lot better than I anticipated. Big kid for a 2 guard to handle and sooo versatile. Team player and leader who played nearly every minute of every game. Imagine a smaller Dominique Sutton who can shoot! I'm really excited about #23.

Wally- Now I'm not about to jump off his train just yet, and I think it's tough to be the first high profile recruit to follow Beasley. Still, his game is lacking in areas. He's a little more trim than I had imagined, but plays physical (when he feels the need). Basically, he's a work in progress on both ends of the court, but has more than enough potential to be a prime time player. I really feel he had a lot of pressure on him today simply because you could tell he admired the crowd so much for their support, that when he couldn't find a rhythm, he got extremely frustrated at himself as if he let people down. Can't wait for Judge-ment day in Manhattan nonetheless.

Expect video to be coming around on Rivals soon enough! Try to catch a game tomorrow if you were busy today.   :ksu:

I only saw the DC/Indy game, so it sounds like that may have been his better game.

(I am not a stat keeper by profession so stats may just be slightly off) So I sat in the Bram all day and watched DC and I actually kept several of the more important stats such as points, rebounds, for McGruder and Judge as well as blocks for Judge. I also kept fouls just to see how foul trouble would affect them, let me just say Judge got into foul trouble in all his games 5 the first, second, and third game, in AAU they get 6 fouls. McGruder on the other hand in the second two games only had 2 fouls in each. Onto points the first game I did not keep this state as I got there a little late but the second game McG. scored 29 and had 4 rrebounds, Judge scored 16 and had 9 rebounds with 2 blocks, I had to go out and take a phone call for a few minutes so I may be just slightly off. The third game which was just not impressive at all they seemed just wiped out which I understand when playing three games in one day, though the other times seemed to be in way better shape. In the third game I also believe Judge had a better game with 9 points and 10 rebounds, while McG. had 7 and 4. I was impressed with there composure Judge for sure getting into foul trouble still played tough and worked fairly strong down low. Now to Lat Will, I only got to watch his last game of the night so I am not sure if he was tired or just a little lazy, but I must say he impressed the hell out of me on the offensive side of the boards he had several blocks as well as a couple good looking dunks. All three of them seemed impressed with the KSU fans when we would cheer real loud for them you noticed little smiles creep on there face. Also for what its worth Judge had shiney purple shoes with a purple undershirt, He loves that purple let me tell you. Anyway for you who did not get to go or did not want to go some of these teams looked really impressive and so far it has turned out to be a pretty good tournament. Hope this helps some and sorry that my stats are not perfect, I get into the games way to much to do that for a living. I think all three would be a great fit in Manhattan. FWIW  :ohno:

Judge is great.  The real problem was with the team as a whole.  DCA had 7 players, and only two were post capable guys.  They never played at the same time.  While Wally was the best post player on the floor at any time, he'd get owned by teams with two guys who could crowd the paint.  The overall team attitude was terrible too.  Easily the more athletic team, but w/o energy.  The coaches had little to no control.  Nothing Frank and 400+ Te' can't run out of them.  Lat on the other had was the star we desperately need.  Put him with some of the DC assault guys and Pullen, Sutton, Samuels, and damn!  He needs to learn to play w/ fire for more than 5 minutes, but other than that.

KWA was a u16 team I watched.  They had a fantastic point guard, last name was Hampton.  Kid flew all over the place.  He literally jumped into the stands.  I'd love to pick him up.

The Iowa barnstormers were my favorite team, just because it was a bunch of scrappy white guys who played fundamental basketball and they really had no business playing with freak athletes, but they were still competing at their level.

The Spiece teams all seemed very good.  I think Perry Ellis (who was sporting a shaved in nike swoosh in his hair) is on one of their MOKAN teams.

Some kid cracked his head on the floor of the rec and they called 911.  The trainer was being a heinous bitch and would not go over there to help.  Did anyone hear if he was alright?

pretty good, absolutely.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

I must say for DC and for Bass Elite the crowds were really good sized, and like I said any time we got really loud for the kids you saw that little smile creep up, and I also noticed the other players on Bass and DC really liked us cheering for them,  They seemed to love having a home town crowd so far from there home town, anyway my opinion the kids were having fun.

    Ready for Maize girls!
here are my bball and non-bball observations.  first, i saw all three DCA 16U games today.  josh hairston is a beast.  he's a legit top 30 guy in my mind.  he has such a great touch on his 8-14 ft. jumper and he creates space so well when his back is to the basket.  next, i was REALLY impressed with thornton.  he doesn't have a fantastic jumper but his build is really solid, his handle is good, and his court awareness is top notch.  not afraid to bang inside and finish the play when he drives into the lane.  i also saw every DCA 17U game.  rodney was good all day.  he's been working on his range and his 3 point stroke is looking very solid.  he is also a very good defender, going after boards and getting steals and blocks.  he's uber-athletic.  i really can't say enough about him.  he could work on his FTs a little more.  didn't really get to see too much of wally because 1st and 3rd games he was in alot of foul trouble and in the 2nd game he went down with what looked (at the time) to be a bad ankle injury.  i like his athleticism and i LOVE his ball-handling skills but he never really impressed me in any of the games.  he has almost zero touch on his shots around the rim.  if he did, he'd have scored over 20 points in every game.  his jumper was short all day.  he doesn't do ANY help defense - not even raising his hand or taking a step toward the shooter.  frank will yell at him A LOT for this.  Spiece Indy Heat is a really good team.  their PG/SG (number 33) is awesome.  great shot and awesome athleticism.  i was only able to watch 1 Bass game, but i really liked what i saw of tay.  uber-althetic, just like mcgruder.  fantastic touch around the rim and good enough body control to finish with contact.  could be a little lazy at times, but hey, the same was said about MB in HS.  also, a beast on the boards and his defensive instincts are good - i don't think i ever saw him foul when going for a block or a steal.  number 1 for Bass is also crazy athletic and their PG ain't shabby either.  nobody on MOKAN spiece really impressed me but they just played good basketball.

now for the off-court stuff.  during the 2nd half of the DCA 16U - KWA game, traynham, judge, pullen and samuals were sitting up in the stands talking with one another.  looked like pullen was giving traynham advice.    oh yeah, traynham also does a weird little "fish out of water" body shake whenever he gets any contact.  more annoying than effective.  tay may not be committed and you may hear rumors that he's falling out of love with manhattan, but fear not wildcat nation - there is hope.  i have seen it - in the form of a manhattanite brunette POA that was hanging out with him all afternoon.
also, austin meek is nowhere near as...well, meek-looking...as his picture on cjonline portrays.  boyish good looks out the ying-yang, but he doesn't look like a 130 lb 8th grader.  oh and also colon and clemente came out to watch the Bass-Speice Indy Heat game.  i think frank might have been sending "representatives" to every game of interest today.

that's all i got.

I must say after watching how much Tay. enjoyed the fans cheering for him, and sitting right behind Bass Elite bench when he was sitting out talking to a player named Chris thought I wrote down his number but I must not have, I thought I heard him say something along the lines of if its this loud for us think how loud it is for big games... not sure what big games mean, maybe college games not sure but he seemed fairly impressed with us cheering for him. I have to admit I was in the front row being as loud as I could.

Were you the dude sitting about 15 rows up just left of mid-court with a foldable board sketching notes on it.  I didn't see any noticable brain scars so it may not have been you.

they lost their next 2 games just lost to a KC team by 20.  not to impressed with judge at all

#23 on the MoKan team was really good.

KWA was a u16 team I watched.

KWA was a 17u team that was overjoyed after barely beating a bunch of little kids (16u DCA).*

*I developed severe hatred for KWA at the end of regulation against 16u DCA when one of their players' mom (or some female associated with the team) went on the court as KWA was shooting free throws to chastise a kid on the team waiting to play that was apparently dribbling a ball too much behind the basket.  The confrontation continued throughout overtime.

i have seen it - in the form of a manhattanite brunette POA that was hanging out with him all afternoon.
also, austin meek is nowhere near as...well, meek-looking...as his picture on cjonline portrays.  boyish good looks out the ying-yang, but he doesn't look like a 130 lb 8th grader.

I saw this too.  Very encouraging.

Meek should get a new head shot for his columns.

I saw that crazy biotch too.  She's the homely one who grabbed the kid by the back of the jersey right?  That kid was a gentleman just for not knifing her.  But I liked KWA just because of their PG.  They were really 17U?  Why were they playing DCA 16?  What is 00's name on DCA U16?

I do not want to sound like I am making excuses for ol' Wally but I must say he seemed very disappointed with himself, wearing his purple shoes and undershirt he wanted to play perfect ball for all of us and he put way to much pressure on himself, he is young he will get bigger and better, I think he will grow to be a hell of a good player, lets not get to hard on him just yet.

6'8" kid with last name Beckett who played for Wedman's team is the grandson of a close co-worker.  Anyone see him play?  Should I ask where he is leaning?  Does it matter?  Let me know because I know his grandad quite well.

Thanks.  It's not like I know Claire McKaskill or anything...

He's not a 6'8" skinny kid with no jumper is he?  We've got a stockpile of those already..
