Replace with:

Men's Lacrosse:  K-State could play in the Great Western Lacrosse League which is Air Force, Denver, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Quinnapiac and Bellarmine.

Men's Tennis:  Per NCAA rules a school must have TWO sports that consists of both genders (K-State would have golf and tennis to meet that requirement).

Wrestling

Women's Softball

Facilities:

Lacrosse:  Old Memorial Stadium (Only need to do some renovations on the West Side since the East Side is slated for a student enrollment/counseling center).   You're looking at about $1.5 million for offices and a dressing room.

Wrestling:  Practice in Ahearn Gym, meets in Bramlage (basketball practice facility in place).   You're looking at $500-$700K for offices and dressing room.

Tennis:  Same as the women, they would just need their own dressing room in Ahearn like the women, you're looking at $300K tops.

Softball:  Just move the fences at TFS, some minor field revamping and take the urinals out of the dressing room.

------------------------------

Lacrosse:  Gaining popularity . . . an early spring Saturday afternoon match against Notre Dame at old Memorial Stadium.  Think about it.

Wrestling:  Would take its lumps, but there is high school wrestling in Kansas and natural rivalries in Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.  I suspect you could draw some pretty nice crowds for some of those matches.

Softball:  Plenty of softball being played around the country, particularly in the Midwest, K-State would have a clear advantage on facilities over just about anybody right out of the gate.

lacrosse!   (hence my thread...indirectly)

I dont see why we still dont have a softball team??? as you said, it would be so easy to do.

I could see wrestling taking some time to really develop but i agree that it is worth a shot.

Why?

KSU Men's baseball:  No conference titles in decades, no NCAA tournament appearances ever.  Let's kill this thing now.

Men's track and XC:  K-State has NEVER won a men's outdoor title, and hasn't won an indoor title in THIRTY TWO years.  K-State hasn't won a cross country conference title in 33 years, and has only finished in the upper half of the Big 12 conference ONE time.   Time to pull the trigger and put this program out of its misery.

Yeah, didn't even think of that since it's a staple.

But you have to have 6 men's sports so lets see:

Football-Fall
Basketball-Winter
Lacrosse-Spring
Wrestling-Winter
Men's Golf-Spring
Men's Tennis-Spring

Women's XC-Fall
Volleyball-Fall
Women's Indoor Track-Winter
Women's Basketball-Winter
Horse Girls-Spring/Winter??
Women's Outdoor Track-Spring
Softball-Spring
Crew-Spring

kansas has some pretty awesome talent in hs wrestling. not saying they would automatically come to KSU, but like you said it's worth a shot and it would take its lumps.

you are right. kansas has a very deep wrestling pool to choose from, but at a d1 level, with competition factored in of course, it will take some time to develop.  worth it though, imo.

wrestling might take it's lumps but it would have support from the beginning. There is tremendous kids, high school, and juco wrestling here. Plus it's exciting to watch - anyone who has been to hays for 3-2-1A state knows what I'm talking about.

as for Track, go ahead and check the credentials of the head coach, Cliff Rovelto. You DONT get rid of him or the program. He's the best coach at KSU and its not even close. The mens programs has been 2nd at the Big 12's in the past and is right now in the transition of becoming a "national" team rather than a conference team. Two yrs ago they were 11th at the NCAA's just missing a top 10 finish by one point. Keep in mind also that a mens track program has 12.6 scholly's.

Rovelto brings enormous amounts of cred to KSU, its just behind the scenes.

Let's see K-State's last 5 Outdoor conference Finishes:

5th
5th
10th
10th
10th

K-State's last 10 NCAA Finishes:

No Points
Tied for 24th
No Points
No Points
No Points
Tied for 48th
Tied for 31st
Tied for 46th
Tied for 36th
Tied for 18th (3 way tie, and there were 22 teams within 10 points of the Top 10)

Yep, that must be the longest transition in history.

Finishing "almost in the Top 10" at the NCAA outdoor is like almost making the cut at the Masters.  Tons of guys get to say that every year, and tons of track teams get to say they almost finished in the Top 10 at the NCAA Outdoor meet.

I was on the 3rd place conference indoor team in '02. I believe the next season they finished 2nd. The '02 team finished 5th in the NCAA TEAM power rankings. The outdoor season sees teams in the south do better with the addition of the Javelin and some other factors.

Dont get me wrong, I have wondered myself why the team has performed at levels that appear sub par, but I have been told that more money is going to fewer athletes, and the athletes that are receiving scholly's are potential scorers at the NCAA meet.

Track should maybe be given a couple of more years to do something, since K-State actually has a little history, and had some world class talent come through over the years.   Hey, I was on the track team way back, but this complete inability to even challenge for a conference title is getting to be absurd.

But baseball should get the ax immediately, it has hit its pinnacle, nice effort guys, but shut it down.  If you've been playing a sport for 100 years, and you've never once been in the competition that determines that sports ultimate champion, than the sports gods are sending you a clear signal.

Move in the fences, and make TFS a women's softball facility.

Start a wrestling program, I could see wrestling matches ultimately drawing 4-5-6,000 people.   A Lacrosse team would be exciting, it's a growing sport, and K-State could build a nice team IMO.

It's time for a paradigm shift, why continue to throw money at sports who never, ever do anything, and nobody cares about??

K-State vs Ohio State in Lacrosse at Old Memorial Stadium . . . that would be exciting.

Track should be axed because it doesn't generate revenue.  No one wants to pay to watch people run in a circle.

maybe not to run in a circle, but i'd damn sure pay to see the High Jump crew that trains under coach Rovelto. 6 guys with a personal best of 7' 6" 1/2 or better. They are in the top 8 in the US and top 25 in the world. Go to a meet some time and who knows, you might be watching a medalist from a past Oly games or a future champion.

Oh yeah, how about that coaching staff? Three Olympians, two of them being among the greatest CLEAN athletes to ever walk this planet, in other two of the greatest ever! Tom Pappas is the only man to ever jump over 7' in the high jump, 17' in the pole vault, and 26' in the long jump in the SAME meet.

wrestling and softball are the two giant question marks in my head, in regards to why we do not already have them.  both would be successful.  kansas has strong wrestling ties as well as softball.  lacrosse is more of a dream, but def. one that i would love to see become a reality.  it is a very competitive sport that is easy for anyone to follow, even if they're not the biggest sports fans.  def. a revenue boon, and if it is a bust it would not be like the school was forced to put that much money into it anyways.

That's all well and good, but that's not a recipe for winning anything in track and field, particularly the real track and field season, which is the outdoor season.

If we add men's tennis, I would cry.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

dax, its not going to hurt recruiting though! Start stacking elites in your stable and people are bound to notice!

I completely agree with softball and wrestling. I grew up playing baseball just like any other American kid, but softball is friggin fun to watch! It just boggles me how we dont have a wrestling program. I just dont know where to begin on that one.

We need something to utilize mem. stadium. That thing is beauitiful.

Wrestling is a terrible, terrible sport.  Its boring, spreads disease, and all high school wrestlers talk about is how wrestling is "harder" than basketball.  Hey, go drain your cauliflower ear idiot.

i'd only be in favor of getting rid of baseball if we replaced it with softball.

and who cares about their titles as long as they wear tight shorts and are good looking.  Like volleyball.  Success, good looking(most of the time) women, tight shorts.

Yes.

Nice.

And wrestling, as much as I hate it, would bring a lot of success to KSU.  Kansas has a lot of really good talent.
