wo former Winchendon School basketball players charged with the statutory rape of a 15-year-old female schoolmate pleaded guilty yesterday to reduced charges.

Tyree Evans, 21, of Richmond, Va., was placed on probation for two years after pleading guilty in Worcester Superior Court to assault and battery. The charge was amended from indecent assault and battery under a plea agreement in the case. A statutory rape charge against Mr. Evans was dismissed at the request of Assistant District Attorney Anthony J. Marotta.

Mr. Evans, described by Mr. Ryan yesterday as an “outstanding basketball prospect,” will attend Butler Community College in Kansas on a basketball scholarship, the lawyer said. Mr. Evans reportedly lost a scholarship offer from the University of Cincinnati while the charges were pending against him; he was recruited at one time by Kansas State University.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

I'm guessing this is a trial run for this kid.  He comes out and goes to Butler CC, and if his behavior stays clean, then Huggins may recruit him in the future.

Just my guess.

Sounds to me like there's no doubt he'll be coming here.

I wonder if Evans decided to plead guilty because K-State decided to quit recruiting him, or K-State decided to quit recruiting him when they found out he was going to plead guilty.  I fell that there is still more to this story that what we know of...

Isn't it great to simply care about this otherwise "behind the scenes" stuff in basketball?  Tyree to a Kansas Juco, Huggins' attorney working for Bill Walker.  We are seemingly losing *excitement* in football (although, I'll wait for the season to make make that statement with an !) due to an inexperienced changeover there, but it's fun to watch another master (Huggins) work in a different sport.

Sometimes I just want to sit back and chuckle.

Smithson is having a full-time guy just follow Tyree around to make sure he stays out of trouble.  We now have six scholarships to use for the GRCOAT, and will still be able to get Evans when OJ and Michael turn pro.

Not to mention, Michael Beasley is really good at basketball.

Kansas State might be willing to give Evans a shot down the road, Wildcats athletic director Tim Weiser said Friday. Earlier this month, Weiser indicated that Evans, who at the time was facing serious legal issues, wouldn’t be a good fit for K-State.

In the future, Weiser might have a different opinion, especially now that Evans’ future from a legal standpoint has become clearer.

Evans, who said this spring he would play at K-State for coach Bob Huggins, saw that particular option end in mid-July when Weiser indicated there was too much baggage in Evans’ situation for the Wildcats to consider him for their one remaining scholarship.

On Tuesday, there was some resolution to Evans’ legal issues. He reached a plea agreement in Worcester, Mass., on charges of statutory rape. Evans pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of assault and battery and received two years of probation.

So Evans, who averaged 29.5 points as a senior in Richmond, Va., before going to a prep school in Winchendon, Mass., will play in 2006-07 for coach Randy Smithson at Butler County in El Dorado, Kan.

Smithson said when he learned K-State would not pursue Evans, he phoned Huggins to get a contact number for him. When Huggins still coached Cincinnati, he received an oral commitment from Evans, but Evans never played there because of grades.

Smithson said he expects Evans will play only one season at Butler County before moving on. Could the destination be K-State?

“I would be surprised if he (Evans) does everything we ask of him if they didn’t recruit him,” Smithson said. “I know where this kid stands. He’s got a lot of allegiance to Bob Huggins.”
