http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/15149816.htmKansas State might be willing to give Evans a shot down the road, Wildcats athletic director Tim Weiser said Friday. Earlier this month, Weiser indicated that Evans, who at the time was facing serious legal issues, wouldn’t be a good fit for K-State.
In the future, Weiser might have a different opinion, especially now that Evans’ future from a legal standpoint has become clearer.
Evans, who said this spring he would play at K-State for coach Bob Huggins, saw that particular option end in mid-July when Weiser indicated there was too much baggage in Evans’ situation for the Wildcats to consider him for their one remaining scholarship.
On Tuesday, there was some resolution to Evans’ legal issues. He reached a plea agreement in Worcester, Mass., on charges of statutory rape. Evans pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of assault and battery and received two years of probation.
So Evans, who averaged 29.5 points as a senior in Richmond, Va., before going to a prep school in Winchendon, Mass., will play in 2006-07 for coach Randy Smithson at Butler County in El Dorado, Kan.
Smithson said when he learned K-State would not pursue Evans, he phoned Huggins to get a contact number for him. When Huggins still coached Cincinnati, he received an oral commitment from Evans, but Evans never played there because of grades.
Smithson said he expects Evans will play only one season at Butler County before moving on. Could the destination be K-State?
“I would be surprised if he (Evans) does everything we ask of him if they didn’t recruit him,” Smithson said. “I know where this kid stands. He’s got a lot of allegiance to Bob Huggins.”
